GIDEON WAITED FOR HERย in the doorway.
Leaving Lady in the rain, which was coming down in sheets, Rune withdrew the boxed flowers from the saddlebag and made a run for it, keeping the hood of her cloak pulled over her hair.
She was grateful for the storm. It would help cover her tracks once sheโd gotten Seraphine out of the palace.
As Gideon held open the door for her, Rune stepped, dripping, into the foyer.
โCome in,โ he said, heading into his parentsโ shop, where the lights were already on.
His gunpowder smell filled the entryway, bringing a rush of memories swirling through Rune. Memories she didย notย want to relive right now. She pushed them aside and followed him in, letting the door fall shut behind her.
โI canโt stay long.โ
โSomewhere important to be?โ
His voice sounded strange. Like someone had wrung out all the emotion, leaving it empty and cold.
โN-no, I โฆโ
Where to start? So much had happened since three nights ago.
First: the flowers.
She held out the box containing the silk flowers heโd made for her. โI came here to return this.โ
Gideon turned to face her. Stubble shadowed his cheeks, and there were dark circles under his eyes, as if he hadnโt slept all night. He stood at the
long worktable, and when he didnโt reach to take the box, Rune approached and set it down on the wooden surface. She immediately stepped back, putting space between them.
Now: the engagement.
Rune had been dreading this part. Sheโd gone over the words in her head, trying to find the right way to tell him about her and Alex, but none of them seemed right.
โCan I ask you something, Miss Winters?โ
โOf course,โ said Rune, happy for the interruption, but wondering why he was being so formal.
โWas any of it real?โ
โReal?โ She frowned. โWhat do you mean?โ
โYou. Me.ย Us.โ Gideon shoved his hands in his pockets. โWhat we did three nights ago. Did you mean any of it? Or were you toying with me the whole time?โ
Her stomach dipped. What was he talking about?
He withdrew his hands and held out both fists, turning them over. When his hands unfurled, Rune saw what lay on each of his palms.
A vial of blood and an access coin.
How โฆ?
โThis is how you manage it,โ said Gideon, lifting the vial to study it. โItโs why you donโt have any casting scars.โ
Rune froze.
He knows what I am.
โCrimson Moth,โ he breathed as his gaze met hers. โIโve finally caught you.โ
She backed away from him.ย Stupid, stupid girl.ย This was a trap. Sheโd not only walked straight into it,ย sheโdย set it up!
Turning on her heel, Rune launched herself back through the shopโs entrance, into the foyer. As she grabbed the handle of the door leading out onto the street, where Lady waited for her, someone pulled it open from the other side.
Laila Creed stood in the frame. Behind her were half a dozen Blood Guard soldiers, their pistols drawn.
Rune stumbled back. She glanced at the stairs, knowing where they led. If she could get to the top and barricade herself inside Gideonโs apartment, she might escape through a window โฆ
โNot so fast,ย witch.โ
Laila grabbed a fistful of her hair, yanking her backward. Pain pierced Runeโs scalp as she hit the floor. Tears stung her eyes as she tried to get up, but every movement only made Laila pull harder. Forcing her to fall still.
Strong hands seized her arms, dragging her inside the shop. The door slammed shut behind them.
The brute whose meaty fingers dug into Runeโs arms shoved her forward. She tripped, stumbling to her knees before Gideonโwho didnโt move to help her.
โI d-donโt understand.โ The cement floor was cold beneath her palms. โH-how did youโโ
โI came to Wintersea last night,โ said Gideon. โWanting to apologize in person and set the record straight.โ
Of course. The flowers.ย It wasnโt Lizbeth who left them on her bed. It was Gideon.
โWhen I arrived, the house was dark, and no servant greeted me. I almost turned around and left, but the sound of voices stopped me. My first thought was that Cressida had come for you. Fearing the worst, I followed the voices.โ
He heard us plotting to rescue Seraphine,ย she realized.
โYou can imagine my surprise when your bedroom wall opened up before my eyes. I hid myself while you and your accomplices walked out of your casting room.โ
Thatโsย how he found the vial of blood. While Rune was showing Alex and Verity out, he must have snuck inside the casting room. He would have seen everything: the spell books, the blood vials, the symbols on the floor.
โIโm not sure what disgusts me more,โ said Gideon. โWhat youย are, or that I fell for your act.โ
Those words stung like a slap.
โWant us to strip her down, Captain?โ said the brute behind her.
โHeโs already looked,โ said Rune, rising to her knees, her voice quaking with anger. โHavenโt you, Gideon? You searched every inch of me three nights ago.โ
Gideonโs face darkened. โThereโs no need to strip her. I have all the proof I need.โ
โWe should search her at least,โ said Laila. โShe might be armed.โ โFine. Search her.โ He nodded to a soldier in the foyer. โHer horse is
outside. Check the saddlebags.โ
Rune quailed. The stolen Blood Guard uniform was in her saddlebag.
This is the end,ย she realized. The evidence mounting against her was too damning.
Laila hauled Rune to her feet, then unclasped her cloak and handed it off. As the meaty one held Runeโs arms, Laila crouched down, feeling inside Runeโs riding boots with one hand while the other kept her pistol aimed at Runeโs face. โNo sudden movements.โ
As Lailaโs hand moved up one leg, then the other, Rune stared at Gideon. Remembering all over again what he was. A formidable enemy. A boy who wanted girls like her strung up and killed.
Heโd been gathering evidence against her from the beginning, waiting for the right moment to bring her down. The gifts. The kisses. The words whispered in the dark between his bedsheets โฆ
None of it had meant a thing.
โYou are everything I thought you were,โ she told him.
Laila found the knife strapped to Runeโs thigh, pulled it out, and tossed it aside. Gideon watched it go skittering across the floor.
โAnd you,โ said Gideon, voice quiet, โare nothing at all like I imagined youโd be.โ
For someone whoโd been hunting her so relentlessly for two years, he should be more triumphant, she thought. Gloating and preening. Instead, he looked โฆ destroyed.
Laila continued patting Runeโs body, never once meeting her gaze. Like Rune was no better than a dog.
โThereโs nothing else,โ Rune told her, face burning. โJust the knife.โ โIโll be the judge of that,โ said Laila.
The soldier whoโd searched her saddlebags came back inside, approaching Gideon with the stolen Blood Guard uniform in hand. He set the clothes down on the table.
Rune swallowed, watching Gideonโs eyes narrow on the uniform, clearly wondering how sheโd acquired it.
โWhatโs this?โ Laila pressed the cold barrel of her pistol to Runeโs chest, tugging at the silver chain hanging there, the bottom of which was hidden below her shirt.
Rune watched as Laila used her gun to lift the ring Alex gave her out from beneath her collar. It dangled in the air, catching the light.
Rune tried to seize it, but her arms were pinned, and Laila beat her to it. The girlโs fist closed around the silver band. She yanked hard, breaking the chain, and handed it over to Gideon.
From the way his jaw clenched, she knew he recognized it immediately.
Rune felt like the world was falling apart around her. This wasnโt how sheโd wanted him to find out.
โYouโreย engagedย to him?โ
He looked like heโd been punched in the stomach.
โI was going to tell you.โ Rune pulled one arm free and stepped toward him, her fingers brushing his sleeve. โGideon โฆโ
He flinched away from her, as if sheโd burned him. His eyes blackened as they met hers.
โNever touch me again.โ
Rune shrank back, feeling something wither inside her.
But why should she cower? He was the one whoโd tricked her into falling in love with him. He was the one consumed by hate. He was the one handing her over to be slaughtered.
Rune straightened. โThatโs right. Iย amย engaged to him. Your brother is twice the man youโll ever be.โ
The hurt in his eyes was unmistakable.
โYou know what?โ Stepping close, he took her hand and shoved the ring onto her finger. โKeep it.โ
For some strange reason, the gesture made Rune want to burst into tears.
โWeโre done here,โ he said, brushing past her. โArrest the Crimson Moth.โ
She watched him walk away, the soldiers parting before him. Watched the door slam as he trod outside, leaving her at the mercy of witch hunters.
As if he couldnโt bear to breathe the same air as her for another second.
