Chapter no 31

Happy Place

REAL LIFE

Friday

โ€œYOU KNEW?โ€ย Iย say.

She doesnโ€™t reply. โ€œSabrina,โ€ I snap.

She throws her arms out to her sides. โ€œOf course I knew! Not that I heard it from you. Not like my best friends tell me a single thing about their lives these days.โ€

Itโ€™s like missing the top step, only to realize the stairs lead directly to the edge of a cliff.

I get out, โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œParth visited Wyn a few weeks ago.โ€

The harbor starts to swirl around me. โ€œDid he . . . tell him?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ She crosses her arms. โ€œWyn went to the bathroom, and Parth was going to send you a picture of himself or something from Wynโ€™s phone. Only when he opened your text thread, there was nothing new forย months. And I guess Wyn had this whole long message drafted, apologizing for how things ended.โ€

โ€œSo he read it,โ€ I say, the words bitter on the back of my tongue.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t intentional,โ€ Sabrina says. โ€œAnd not the whole thing. But enough to know what happened.โ€

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you say anything?โ€ I say.

โ€œMe? Youโ€™re the one who hid this, Harry. For months youโ€™ve told me almost nothing about your life, and meanwhile Cleo cancels every set of plans she makes, and Wyn wasnโ€™t even going toย comeย this week until I begged, andโ€”โ€

โ€œWait.โ€ I close my eyes, shake my head. It canโ€™t be.

It has to be.

โ€œThatโ€™s what this is all about?โ€ I open my eyes, lungs compressing. โ€œThis whole trip?โ€

Sabrinaโ€™s shoulders square, her chin rising.

I think of all the moments Sabrina shoved Wyn and me together. I think of all the times she weaseled out of even a few minutes alone with me. Even on the drive from the airport, she had the music blasting and windows down so that even ifย Iโ€™dย wanted to tell her about Wyn,ย sheย could plausibly deny hearing it.

The anger floods me now. Anger like Iโ€™ve never felt. โ€œThis trip down memory lane? The bathroom with no fucking door? This was allโ€”all some game to you?โ€

โ€œAย game?โ€ she says. โ€œHarriet, we were trying toย helpย you. You and Wyn belong together.โ€

โ€œHow could you put us through all of this?โ€ My vocal cords are shivering from anger.

Sabrinaโ€™s eyes flare, but her mouth jams shut.

โ€œYou made us bend over backward all week. Youย torturedย us,โ€ I say. โ€œHow could you all do this?โ€

โ€œWe didnโ€™t know,โ€ comes a quiet voice.

Cleo has followed us, the light from the Hound & Thistle limning her in red gold. โ€œDidnโ€™t know you and Wyn broke up,โ€ she says. โ€œDidnโ€™t know this whole week was a sham.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not aย sham,โ€ Sabrina says. โ€œWe wereย helpingย them.โ€ โ€œHelping us doย what?โ€ I say raggedly.

โ€œGet back together!โ€ she replies.

โ€œIf we wanted to be together,โ€ I say, โ€œweโ€™d be together!โ€

โ€œOh, please,โ€ she says. โ€œYou donโ€™t knowย whatย you want, Harriet! Youโ€™reย losingย the love of your life because youโ€™re too indecisive to just pick a wedding date and a venue.โ€

White-hot hurt blazes out from my chest. โ€œWeโ€™re not together because we donโ€™t want to be, Sabrina! Because we canโ€™t make each other happy, no matter how badly we want to.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ she says. โ€œBecause Parthย sawย what Wyn wrote, and it sure sounds like, once again, you sat there and let your life happen to you instead of fighting for what you want.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t get to decide whatโ€™s best for everyone,โ€ Cleo says. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter how good you think your intentions were. You manipulated us. Youย knewย how stressed out I was about this week, and youย knewย why Wyn wasnโ€™t coming, and you forced us all into it anyway.โ€

โ€œI did what I had to,โ€ Sabrina says. โ€œJust like I always do, because no one makes even the tiniest bit of effort anymore. If I waited on all of you, this friendship would already be over, and you know it. I send the first text. I make the phone calls. I leave the voicemails. I schedule the trips, and when you cancel on them, I pitch other dates, and when you canโ€™t give me an immediate yes or no, guess what?ย Iโ€™mย the one to check back in a couple days later.โ€

โ€œWe have other things going on in our lives,โ€ Cleo says. โ€œWe canโ€™t always drop everything to relive the glory days with you.โ€

Instantly, I can tell from Sabrinaโ€™s expression that Cleoโ€™s hit a nerve, a deep one.

All my virulent anger breaks, a fog clearing enough to reveal a steep drop-off ahead. The angerโ€™s still there, but the fear is heavier, rooting through me, yelling,ย Stop, stop, stop this, before it gets any worse.ย Stop this before someone leaves. Before you lose them.

โ€œLetโ€™s all cool off for a second,โ€ I choke out.

Cleoโ€™s eyes lock on to me. โ€œIโ€™m not angry,โ€ she says evenly.

She means it. Thereโ€™s no fire behind her gaze, only exhaustion, only disappointment. โ€œIโ€™m just not pretending anymore.โ€

The sidewalk seems to crack underneath me, the world splitting. If I donโ€™t do something, the gap will yawn wider and wider until I canโ€™t reach them. Until Iโ€™m all alone.

โ€œNot pretendingย what?โ€ Sabrina asks.

โ€œThat theseย areย the glory days,โ€ Cleo says. โ€œThat weโ€™re as close as we used to be, when the truth is, itโ€™s different.ย Weโ€™reย different.โ€

โ€œCleo,โ€ I say, quiet, pleading.

โ€œOur lives are total opposites,โ€ she goes on, โ€œand our schedules are totally different, and we donโ€™t like spending our free time the same way anymore, and Wynโ€™s out in Montana, and Harrietโ€™s all but cut us out of her life, and you and Parth still want everything to be one big party, but itโ€™s not! Thereโ€™s real shit going on in our lives, and we never talk about any of it.โ€

โ€œI havenโ€™t cut you out of my life,โ€ I say. โ€œWe kept something from you that was so painful I havenโ€™t been able to make myself tellย anyoneย about it. I can still hardly think about itโ€”aboutย himโ€”without feeling like . . . like the worldโ€™s coming apart at the seams.โ€

Cleoโ€™s eyes are dark and glossy. โ€œWeโ€™re exactly who youโ€™re supposed to come to when you feel like that, and instead you stop talking to us, and then when things are . . . are hard for us, what are we supposed to do?โ€

โ€œOh, come on, Cleo,โ€ Sabrina says. โ€œDonโ€™t act like youโ€™re any better. Youโ€™ve been dodging plans with me forย months. As far asย Iย can tell,ย Iโ€™mย the only one trying to hold all this together, while everyone else would be totally fine never seeing one another.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve seen one another allย week,โ€ Cleo says, โ€œand youโ€™re just now telling us this was all some kind of Machiavellian scheme, and Harrietโ€™s just confessing she and Wyn arenโ€™t even together, and weโ€™ve hadย days, and it hasnโ€™t even mattered. Because youโ€™d rather sit in a theater for five hours, just because weย used to, than adjust to the fact that maybe weโ€™d all rather do something different! Weโ€™re not in the same place anymore. Weโ€™re growing up.โ€

Her voice wavers. โ€œAnd in different directions. And there are things we canโ€™t talk to one another about anymore, and maybe weโ€™ve all been fighting

it, or pretending we donโ€™t notice, when we should accept it. Weโ€™re not what we used to be for one another. And thatโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine?โ€ Sabrina repeats emptily.

โ€œThings are changing. They already have. And Iโ€™ve never been this person who just goes along with things she doesnโ€™t want to do, but youโ€™ve made it so I have to. It all has to be on your terms.โ€

โ€œNo oneโ€™s forcing you to stay!โ€ Sabrina says. โ€œIf you want to go, go!โ€

Cleo looks down at her feet, a tiny fern growing up between the cracks in the sidewalk there, right between her sandals. โ€œFine,โ€ she says. โ€œKimmy and I will find a hotel for the night.โ€

Another cold laugh from Sabrina. โ€œSo, what, youโ€™re going toย consciously uncoupleย from our friendship?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to take someย space,โ€ Cleo says.

โ€œThis is ridiculous,โ€ Sabrina replies. โ€œYou wonโ€™t find anywhere to stay on this entire coast.โ€

Cleoโ€™s lips press tighter. โ€œThen weโ€™ll sleep in the guesthouse tonight.โ€ โ€œAnd then what?โ€ Sabrina says.

โ€œI donโ€™t know yet,โ€ Cleo said. โ€œMaybe leave.โ€

I have no idea how to argue with her, or if I even want to. My head throbs. Everything is all wrong.

Finally, Sabrina says, โ€œIโ€™ll get the car.โ€ She turns and stalks down the street. I look back the way we came. Even in silhouette, Kimmy, Wyn, and Parth look rigid. They heard everything.

In a way, I tell myself, itโ€™s a relief, to have everything out in the open.

But the truth is, if I could take it all back, I would. Iโ€™d do anything to go back to that happy place, outside of time, where nothing from real life can touch us.
