Chapter no 29 – Scarlett

Finale (Caraval, 3)

Tella looked the way Scarlett felt right after sheโ€™d been taken by the Fallen Star. Exhausted and broken and not entirely certain what to do next.

โ€œScar,โ€ Tella said, her voice rough from waking up. The uneven sound of her scrambling feet followed as she raced down the ladder from the loft. Before she reached the bottom rung, she jumped forward and tossed her arms around Scarlett. โ€œIโ€™m so glad youโ€™re all right.โ€

โ€œNothing is going to happen to me.โ€ Scarlett squeezed her sister back. โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t tell you where I was going. Meeting Nicolas was a mistake.โ€

The barn fell silent. All Scarlett could hear was the crackle of hay beneath Tella and Julian as they exchanged troubled looks.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€

Tella released her sister as Julian pulled at the back of his neck. โ€œWhat happened?โ€ Scarlett repeated.

โ€œNicolas is dead,โ€ Tella said. โ€œWe think he was murdered by the Fallen Star.โ€

If Scarlett had been capable of feeling more emotion, her legs might have buckled, or she might have felt tears build behind her eyes for the man sheโ€™d once intended to marry. But for a heartbeat, the only colors she could see were black and white, as if her emotions were shutting off so that they didnโ€™t consume her.

Sheโ€™d never imagined her game would have ended this way. โ€œHow do you know it was the Fallen Star?โ€ Scarlett asked.

โ€œBecause of the way he was killed,โ€ Julian answered, looking down. โ€œHe was burned.โ€

โ€œPoor Nicolas.โ€ Scarlett hugged her arms to her chest, wishing she could

go back in time, wishing sheโ€™d forgiven Julian sooner and never rekindled things with Nicolas. The Fallen Star had undoubtedly come here looking to find her, and Nicolas had paid the price.

โ€œHow did you get away?โ€ Tella asked. โ€œWhere have you been?โ€

It was tempting to make up a lie. After finally confessing her feelings to Julian, Scarlett didnโ€™t want Julian to view her differently. And Tella looked so fragile already. Scarlett imagined a feather could have knocked her over; it might break her to learn the Fate who killed their mother was Scarlettโ€™s birth father. But it was too dangerous of a secret to keep.

Scarlett started with the least shocking information, by telling Tella about the Reverie Key sheโ€™d been given, and how she could use it to escape anywhere. Tella perked up with a bit of awe and a hint of jealousy, which was better than fragility and fear. But Scarlett doubted her sister would have the same response to this next revelation. Scarlett still wasnโ€™t sure how she felt about it, but she knew she couldnโ€™t keep it to herself.

She took a deep breath. โ€œItโ€™s a good thing I had the key, because I didnโ€™t actually get away. I was abducted by the Fallen Star. Tella, you were right about why the Fallen Star came here. But he wasnโ€™t looking for both of us, just me. Heโ€™s my father.โ€

Scarlett half expected the ground to shake or the rickety roof to collapse at her words.

Tellaโ€™s face went bone-white, but her expression turned fierce and her hand felt warm and solid as she took Scarlettโ€™s and squeezed tight. โ€œYouโ€™re the same as youโ€™ve always been, we just know more about you now. But it doesnโ€™t change youโ€”not unless you let it. And this news doesnโ€™t changeย us,ย either. Even if we didnโ€™t share any blood at all, I would still call you my sister and I would battle anyone who tried to say it wasnโ€™t true. You are my family, Scarlett. Who your birth father is doesnโ€™t change that.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t see you differently either.โ€ Julian wrapped an arm around Scarlett. But when he spoke again, his voice was tentative. โ€œDoes this make you a Fate?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Tella said immediately. โ€œThe witch who helped the Fallen Star create the Fates said that the Fates were made, not born. And Scarlett could never be a Fateโ€”Fates canโ€™t love. If an immortal loves, it makes them human, and we both know how much Scarlett loves.โ€

โ€œTellaโ€™s right, Iโ€™m not a Fate,โ€ Scarlett said. But when she tried to add a smile to her words, her voice wobbled as she thought about the Fallen Starโ€™s threat to turn her into one. She wasnโ€™t with him now. But her powers had been

growing on their ownโ€”what if she was already on her way to becoming a Fate?

Julianโ€™s arm tightened around her. โ€œItโ€™s all right, Crimson, youโ€™re safe now.

We wonโ€™t let him find you.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what Iโ€™m worried about,โ€ Scarlett confessed. โ€œThe Fallen Star said he wanted to cultivate my powers and turn me into a Fate.โ€

Julian stiffened beside her.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to worry, he doesnโ€™t have you anymore,โ€ Tella said. โ€œWhat if it happens without him? Iโ€™ve always seen my emotions in colors.

But lately Iโ€™ve been seeing the feelings of other people as well.โ€ โ€œLike our feelings?โ€ Julian asked.

Scarlett nodded. โ€œAt first it was just glimpses. But I can feel the ability becoming more powerfulโ€”โ€

She cut off at the sound of a bark, near, and loud enough to draw everyoneโ€™s attention to the mouth of the barn, where Nicolasโ€™s dog, Timber, barked again, more urgently this time.
