Chapter no 5 – Park

Eleanor & Park

Mr Stessman was making them all memorize a poem, whatever poem they wanted. Well, whatever poem they picked.

โ€˜Youโ€™re going to forget everything else I teach you,โ€™ Mr Stessman said, petting his mustache. โ€˜Everything. Maybe youโ€™ll remember that Beowulf fought a monster. Maybe youโ€™ll remember that โ€œTo be or not to beโ€ isย Hamlet, notย Macbethย โ€ฆ

โ€˜But everything else? Forget about it.โ€™

He was slowly walking up and down each aisle. Mr Stessman loved this kind of stuff โ€“ theater in the round. He stopped next to Parkโ€™s desk and leaned in casually with his hand on the back of Parkโ€™s chair. Park stopped drawing and sat up straight. He couldnโ€™t draw anyway.

โ€˜So, youโ€™re going to memorize a poem,โ€™ Mr Stessman continued, pausing a moment to smile down at Park like Gene Wilder in the chocolate factory.

โ€˜Brains love poetry. Itโ€™s sticky stuff. Youโ€™re going to memorize this poem, and five years from now, weโ€™re going to see each other at the Village Inn, and youโ€™ll say, โ€œMr Stessman, I still remember โ€˜The Road Not Taken!โ€™ Listen โ€ฆ โ€˜Two roads diverged in a yellow woodย โ€ฆโ€™โ€โ€™

He moved on to the next desk. Park relaxed.

โ€˜Nobody gets to pick โ€œThe Road Not Taken,โ€ by the way, Iโ€™m sick to death of it. And no Shel Silverstein. Heโ€™s grand, but youโ€™ve graduated.

Weโ€™re all adults here. Choose an adult poem โ€ฆ

โ€˜Choose aย romanticย poem, thatโ€™s my advice. Youโ€™ll get the most use out of it.โ€™

He walked by the new girlโ€™s desk, but she didnโ€™t turn away from the window.

โ€˜Of course, itโ€™s up to you. You may choose โ€œA Dream Deferredโ€ โ€“ Eleanor?โ€™ She turned blankly. Mr Stessman leaned in. โ€˜You may choose it,

Eleanor. Itโ€™s poignant and itโ€™s truth. But how often will you get to roll that one out?

โ€˜No. Choose a poem that speaks to you. Choose a poem that will help you speak to someone else.โ€™

Park planned to choose a poem that rhymed, so it would be easier to memorize. He liked Mr Stessman, he really did โ€“ but he wished heโ€™d dial it back a few notches. Whenever he worked the room like this, Park got embarrassed for him.

โ€˜We meet tomorrow in the library,โ€™ Mr Stessman said, back at his desk. โ€˜Tomorrow, weโ€™re gathering rosebuds.โ€™

The bell rang. On cue.
