Chapter no 42 – Corrick

Destroy the Day (Defy the Night, #3)

Two months after we arrive, weโ€™re given word that we are able to return to the Royal Sector. The east wing of the palace is now habitable, though the central portion and the west wing will take at least a year of repairs.

Lochlan and Karri have been staying with us in Consul Beechingโ€™s manor, but when servants begin packing to return to the Royal Sector, Iโ€™m surprised to hear from Tessa that Lochlan and Karri are planning to return to their small apartment in Artis.

I go to find Lochlan, and heโ€™s loading his own belongings into a trunk.

โ€œThe servants would have gotten to your quarters,โ€ I tell him.

He snorts. โ€œI donโ€™t needย servants.โ€

โ€œWell, they would have.โ€ I pause. โ€œAre you really not moving to the palace?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t belong in the palace.โ€ He gestures around the room. โ€œIย really didnโ€™t belongย here. I shouldnโ€™t have stayed this long, but I was worried these people were going to tear you apart.โ€

โ€œOh, theyโ€™re still going to try.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ He studies me. โ€œBut youโ€™re on your feet now.โ€ He pauses. โ€œYour Majesty.โ€

Iโ€™m still not used to it. The title tugs at me in a way that hurts.

I wonder if it did that to Harristan after our father died. I wonder if it will ever stop.

I cross my arms and lean against the doorway. โ€œHow will you keep up your studies?โ€

Itโ€™s a genuine question. When he determined to stay, I hired him a tutor the very next day.

Lochlan looks back at the things heโ€™s packing. โ€œKarri will help me. You donโ€™t need to keep paying someone.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t mind.โ€

He says nothing to that, and silence builds between us for a while.

Eventually, I break it. โ€œDo you really want to leave?โ€

He scoffs. โ€œI already told you. I donโ€™t belong there.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I asked.โ€

His hands go still on his belongings. โ€œYouโ€™ve done enough for me. I can go back to my job in the forges and stop making a fool of myself in front of all these people.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not making a fool of yourself. I rather liked it when you told Baron Vannerling to go stick his head in the watering trough if he needed to cool off.โ€

Lochlan smiles.

โ€œAnd I could give you a job in the palace,โ€ I add.

โ€œCleaning privies? No thank you.โ€

I raise my eyebrows. โ€œThe role of Kingโ€™s Justice is open.โ€

He stares at me.

โ€œRather unexpectedly,โ€ I add.

โ€œShut up, Cory.โ€ He goes back to packing.

โ€œIโ€™m making a genuine offer, Lochlan. Iโ€™ve been receiving increasing pressure to name someone to the role, and I need someone I can trust, but who would be willing to stand firm when we differ on matters of importance. I had considered one of my brotherโ€™s guards, but I donโ€™t know that they would contradict me when necessary.โ€

He says nothing to that.

โ€œFor example,โ€ I continue, โ€œIโ€™m not sure I could find another person in the kingdom who would say, โ€˜Shut up, Cory,โ€™ directly to my face.โ€

He grins. โ€œI bet I could.โ€

โ€œExactlyย why youโ€™re perfect for the role.โ€

He sobers. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be like you.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want you to be like me. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m asking you.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the pay?โ€

I can tell that heโ€™s teasing, but I tell him anyway. He blanches.

Sits down.

I smile and turn away from his door. โ€œGet used to servants,โ€ I call.
