Two months after we arrive, weโre given word that we are able to return to the Royal Sector. The east wing of the palace is now habitable, though the central portion and the west wing will take at least a year of repairs.
Lochlan and Karri have been staying with us in Consul Beechingโs manor, but when servants begin packing to return to the Royal Sector, Iโm surprised to hear from Tessa that Lochlan and Karri are planning to return to their small apartment in Artis.
I go to find Lochlan, and heโs loading his own belongings into a trunk.
โThe servants would have gotten to your quarters,โ I tell him.
He snorts. โI donโt needย servants.โ
โWell, they would have.โ I pause. โAre you really not moving to the palace?โ
โI donโt belong in the palace.โ He gestures around the room. โIย really didnโt belongย here. I shouldnโt have stayed this long, but I was worried these people were going to tear you apart.โ
โOh, theyโre still going to try.โ
โI know.โ He studies me. โBut youโre on your feet now.โ He pauses. โYour Majesty.โ
Iโm still not used to it. The title tugs at me in a way that hurts.
I wonder if it did that to Harristan after our father died. I wonder if it will ever stop.
I cross my arms and lean against the doorway. โHow will you keep up your studies?โ
Itโs a genuine question. When he determined to stay, I hired him a tutor the very next day.
Lochlan looks back at the things heโs packing. โKarri will help me. You donโt need to keep paying someone.โ
โI didnโt mind.โ
He says nothing to that, and silence builds between us for a while.
Eventually, I break it. โDo you really want to leave?โ
He scoffs. โI already told you. I donโt belong there.โ
โThatโs not what I asked.โ
His hands go still on his belongings. โYouโve done enough for me. I can go back to my job in the forges and stop making a fool of myself in front of all these people.โ
โYouโre not making a fool of yourself. I rather liked it when you told Baron Vannerling to go stick his head in the watering trough if he needed to cool off.โ
Lochlan smiles.
โAnd I could give you a job in the palace,โ I add.
โCleaning privies? No thank you.โ
I raise my eyebrows. โThe role of Kingโs Justice is open.โ
He stares at me.
โRather unexpectedly,โ I add.
โShut up, Cory.โ He goes back to packing.
โIโm making a genuine offer, Lochlan. Iโve been receiving increasing pressure to name someone to the role, and I need someone I can trust, but who would be willing to stand firm when we differ on matters of importance. I had considered one of my brotherโs guards, but I donโt know that they would contradict me when necessary.โ
He says nothing to that.
โFor example,โ I continue, โIโm not sure I could find another person in the kingdom who would say, โShut up, Cory,โ directly to my face.โ
He grins. โI bet I could.โ
โExactlyย why youโre perfect for the role.โ
He sobers. โI wouldnโt be like you.โ
โI donโt want you to be like me. Thatโs why Iโm asking you.โ
โWhatโs the pay?โ
I can tell that heโs teasing, but I tell him anyway. He blanches.
Sits down.
I smile and turn away from his door. โGet used to servants,โ I call.
