Chapter no 23 – Juliette Ella

Defy Me (Shatter Me Book 5)

Iโ€™m running for my life, bolting down hallways and up staircases. A low, insistent alarm has gone off, its high, piercing sound sending shocks of fear through me even as my feet pound the floor. I feel strong, steady, but Iโ€™m increasingly aware of my inability to navigate these snaking paths. I could see

โ€”could feelโ€”Emmaline growing weaker as I left, and now, the farther I get from her, the dimmer our connection becomes. She showed me, in her memories, how Max and Evie slowly stripped her of control; Emmaline is more powerful than anyone, but now she can only use her powers on command. It took all her strength to push past the fail-safes long enough to use her strength at will, and now that her voice has retreated from my mind, I know she wonโ€™t be back. Not anytime soon. I have to figure out my own way out of here.

I will.

My power is back on. I can get through anything from here. I have to.

And when I hear someone shout I spin around, ready to fightโ€”

But the face in the distance is so familiar I stop, stunned, in my tracks. Kenji barrels into me.

Kenji.

Kenji is hugging me. Kenji is hugging me, and heโ€™s uninjured. Heโ€™s perfect.

And just as I begin to return his embrace he swears, violently, and launches himself backward. โ€œJesus, womanโ€” Are you trying to kill me? You canโ€™t turn that shit off for a second? You have to go and ruin our dramatic reunion by nearly murdering me even after Iโ€™ve gone to all the trouble of fโ€”โ€ I launch myself into his arms again and he stiffens, relaxing only when he realizes Iโ€™ve pulled my power back. I forgot, for a second, how much of my

skin was exposed in this dress.

โ€œKenji,โ€ I breathe. โ€œYouโ€™re alive. Youโ€™re okay. Oh my God.โ€

โ€œHey,โ€ he says. โ€œHey.โ€ He pulls back, looks me in the eye. โ€œIโ€™m okay. You okay?โ€

I donโ€™t really know how to answer the question. Finally, I say, โ€œIโ€™m not sure.โ€

He studies my face for a second. He looks concerned.

And then, the knot of fear growing only more painful in my throat, I ask the question killing me most:

โ€œWhereโ€™s Warner?โ€ Kenji shakes his head.

I feel myself begin to unravel.

โ€œI donโ€™t know yet,โ€ Kenji says quietly. โ€œBut weโ€™re going to find him, okay? Donโ€™t worry.โ€

I nod. My bottom lip trembles and I bite it down but the tremble wonโ€™t be killed. It grows, multiplies, evolves into a tremor that shakes me from stem to sternum.

โ€œHey,โ€ Kenji says. I look up.

โ€œYou want to tell me where all the blood came from?โ€ I blink. โ€œWhat blood?โ€

He raises his eyebrows at me. โ€œTheย blood,โ€ he says, gesturing, generally, at my body. โ€œOn your face. Your dress. All over your hands.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ I say, startled. I look at my hands as if seeing them for the first time. โ€œThe blood.โ€

Kenji sighs, squints at something over my shoulder. He pulls a pair of gloves out of his back pocket and tugs them on. โ€œAll right, princess, turn your power back on. We have to move.โ€

We break apart. Kenji pulls his invisibility over us both. โ€œFollow me,โ€ he says, taking my hand.

โ€œWhere are we going?โ€ I say.

โ€œWhat do you mean,ย where are we going? Weโ€™re getting the hell out of here.โ€

โ€œButโ€” What about Warner?โ€

โ€œNazeera is looking for him as we speak.โ€

I stop so suddenly I nearly stumble. โ€œNazeera is here?โ€

โ€œUh, yeahโ€” Soโ€” Itโ€™s a really long story? But the short answer is yes.โ€ โ€œSo thatโ€™s how you got in here,โ€ I say, beginning to understand.

โ€œNazeera.โ€

Kenji makes a sound of disbelief. โ€œWow, right off the bat you give me no credit, huh? Cโ€™mon, J, you know I love a good rescue mission. I know some things. I can figure things out, too.โ€

For the first time in weeks I feel a smile tug at my lips. A laugh builds and breaks inside my body. Iโ€™ve missed this so much. Iโ€™ve missed my friends so much. Emotion wells in my throat, surprising me.

โ€œI missed you, Kenji,โ€ I say. โ€œIโ€™m so happy youโ€™re here.โ€

โ€œHey,โ€ Kenji says sharply. โ€œDonโ€™t you dare start crying. If you start crying Iโ€™ll start crying and we do not have time to cry right now. We have too much

shit to do, okay? We can cry later, at a more convenient time. Okay?โ€ When I say nothing, he squeezes my hand.

โ€œOkay?โ€ he says again. โ€œOkay,โ€ I say.

I hear him sigh. โ€œDamn,โ€ he says. โ€œThey really messed you up in here, didnโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry,โ€ he says.

โ€œCan we cry about it later? Iโ€™ll tell you everything.โ€

โ€œHell yeah we can cry about it later.โ€ Kenji tugs gently on my hand to get us moving again. โ€œI have so much shit to cry about, J. So much. We should make, like, a list.โ€

โ€œGood idea,โ€ I say, but my heart is in my throat again.

โ€œHey, donโ€™t worry,โ€ Kenji says, reading my thoughts. โ€œSeriously. Weโ€™ll find Warner. Nazeera knows what sheโ€™s doing.โ€

โ€œBut I donโ€™t think I can just wait while Nazeera goes searching for him. I canโ€™t just stand aroundโ€” I need to do something. I need to look for him myselfโ€”โ€

โ€œUh-uh. No way. Nazeera and I split up on purpose.ย Myย mission is to get you on the plane.ย Herย mission is to get Warner on the plane. Thatโ€™s how math works.โ€

โ€œWaitโ€” You have a plane?โ€

โ€œHow else did you think we got here?โ€ โ€œI have no idea.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s another long story, and Iโ€™ll fill you in later, but the highlights are that Nazeera is very confusing but helpful, and according to her calculations, we need to be getting the hell out of here yesterday. Weโ€™re running out of time.โ€

โ€œBut wait, Kenjiโ€” What happened to everyone? Last time I saw you, you were bleeding. Brendan had been shot. Castle was down. I thought everyone was dead.โ€

Kenji doesnโ€™t answer me at first. โ€œYou really have no idea what happened, huh?โ€ he says finally.

โ€œI only know that I didnโ€™t actually kill all those people at the symposium.โ€ โ€œOh yeah?โ€ He sounds surprised. โ€œWho told you?โ€

โ€œEmmaline.โ€ โ€œYourย sister?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I say, sighing heavily. โ€œThereโ€™s so much I have to tell you. But firstโ€” Please tell me everyone is still alive.โ€

Kenji hesitates. โ€œI mean, I think so? Honestly, I donโ€™t know. Nazeera says theyโ€™re alive. Sheโ€™s promising to come through on getting them to safety, so Iโ€™m still holding my breath. But get this.โ€ He stops walking, puts an invisible

hand on my shoulder. โ€œYouโ€™re never going to believe this.โ€ โ€œLet me guess,โ€ I say. โ€œAnderson is alive.โ€

I hear Kenjiโ€™s sharp intake of breath. โ€œHow did you know?โ€ โ€œEvie told me.โ€

โ€œSo you know about how he came back to Sector 45?โ€ โ€œWhat?โ€ I say. โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œWell, what I was about to tell you, right now, was that Anderson came back to base. Heโ€™s resumed his position as supreme commander of North America. He was there right before we left. Nazeera told me he made up this whole story about how heโ€™d been ill and how our team had spread false rumors while he was recoveringโ€”and that youโ€™d been executed for your deception.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I say, stunned. โ€œThatโ€™s insane.โ€ โ€œThis is what Iโ€™m saying.โ€

โ€œSo what are we going to do when we get back to Sector 45?โ€ I say. โ€œWhere do we go? Where do we stay?โ€

โ€œShit if I know,โ€ Kenji says. โ€œRight now, Iโ€™m just hoping we can get out of here alive.โ€

Finally, we reach the exit. Kenji has a security card that grants him access to the door, and it opens easily.

From there, itโ€™s almost too simple. Our invisibility keeps us undetected.

And once weโ€™re on the plane, Kenji checks his watch.

โ€œWeโ€™ve only got thirty minutes, just so you know. That was the rule. Thirty minutes and if Nazeera doesnโ€™t show up with Warner, we have to go.โ€

My heart drops into my stomach.
