Iโm soaking wet and freezing on the deck of the ship. Fog is everywhere.
I feel nothing.
Corrick is gone.
Iโve lost him again. Lochlan is gone.
Iโm sorry, Karri.
A hand touches my shoulder. โTessa.โ
Rian. I jerk away. I donโt trust my voice. I choke on a sob.
โPlease.โ My voice breaks. โPlease go away.โ He moves closer. โTessa, Iโmโโ
โKeep your distance,โ Rocco says sharply. I didnโt even realize he was nearby. I turn my head a fraction and see heโs facing down Rian.
I think the captain is going to snap at the guardsman, but he doesnโt. He straightens and takes a step back. โWeโll reach Fairde before daybreak. Weโre in safer waters now. I thought you should know.โ
I donโt care. I want to sink the ship myself. I say nothing.
โI told you to keep your distance,โ Rocco says again.
Rian inhalesโbut then he must think better of it, because he moves away.
โThank you, Rocco,โ I whisper. โYes, Miss Tessa.โ
I swallow. Weโve both lost too much. โYou donโt โฆ you donโt have to guard me.โ
After a moment, he sits down beside me. After another moment, he takes my hand and gives it a squeeze. Itโs kind. Brotherly.
โThereโs no one left to guard,โ he says quietly.
I put my face in my hands. โDo you think weโll ever be able to get back?โ
โI donโt know.โ
Thereโs something terrifyingly bleak about that.
Weโll reach Fairde before daybreak. I thought you should know.
I draw a shuddering breath, then swipe the tears off my cheeks. Iโve been too naive for too long. Too trusting of too many people. All I ever wanted to do was help the people around me, and all itโs ever led to is pain and suffering.
So I sit up straighter and I look at Rocco. โI donโt know what to expect in Fairde,โ I say. โBut weโre all thatโs left, Rocco. We need to stick together. You and me.โ
โYes, Miss Tessa.โ
I shake my head. โNo Miss Tessa anymore. Just Tessa.โ He nods. โJust Erik.โ He holds out a hand.
โErik,โ I whisper. I clasp his hand. His almost dwarfs mine.
For an instance the fog breaks ahead, revealing a long stretch of glittering water. Beyond, I see a few scattered lights on the water, and my heart skips, expecting another attack. But they arenโt more ships. Theyโre fires or lanterns or something to indicate land.
And then, as I stare, the moonlight glistens on a large structure in the distance, a castle stretching into the sky.
I feel a band of steel wrapping around my spine, chasing away all the pain that feels too overwhelming. โI need you to help me with something,โ I say to Roccoโtoย Erik.
โAnything,โ he says.
โWhen we get to Ostriary,โ I say, โI want you to teach me to fight.โ
