Chapter no 50 – SUMMERโ€Œ

Collide

THE FIRST FEW weeks after spring break are my favorite. My professors are relaxed, the students are off Adderall, and the sun is out. Except this year, three weeks in, and Iโ€™m losing my hair.

It doesnโ€™t help that Aiden is miles away playing hockey every weekend and practicing on weekdays. On top of that, the school is investigating the break-in after Dean Hutchins received the email about Langstonโ€™s professor-student relationship.

Now, lying in bed while Amara is out and the guys are coming back from a tournament, I canโ€™t sleep. However, my lucky stars must be aligned because when my phone rings, itโ€™s Aiden.

I answer his video call, seeing the tired smile on his lips. โ€œHey. I tried to keep up with Kianโ€™s short vlogs, but they were cut short.โ€

โ€œWe advanced. And Kilner confiscated Kianโ€™s phone when he tried to make him do a dance.โ€

I chuckle, feeling lighter with just Aidenโ€™s voice in my ears. โ€œWerenโ€™t you supposed to get back earlier?โ€

โ€œWe did, but I had something to do first,โ€ he says quickly. โ€œAre you coming over?โ€

โ€œDo I look like a booty call to you, Crawford?โ€

โ€œDepends. What are you wearing?โ€ He smiles innocently. โ€œWe can even extend the booty call and get breakfast in the morning.โ€

โ€œHow thoughtful,โ€ I say dryly. โ€œBut Iโ€™m a bit tired tonight.โ€ There is too much on my mind, but I canโ€™t tell Aiden about the break-in until itโ€™s resolved, or heโ€™ll try to run into action mode.

โ€œWant me to come over instead?โ€

โ€œYou look exhausted, youโ€™ll probably fall asleep at the wheel.โ€

โ€œThen come to me. I can send you an Uber.โ€ When I don’t answer, he sighs. โ€œCome on, Summer. Iโ€™m tired, and I missed you all weekend. I just want you in my bed tonight, please.โ€

Guilt bites at me. โ€œIโ€™ll be over tomorrow, I promise.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d tell me if something was wrong, wouldnโ€™t you?โ€ That stings. โ€œOf course. Nothing you need to worry about.โ€

The look on his face is thoughtful. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to deal with everything alone, Summer. Iโ€™m here. For you. No other reason. I’d like to prove it to you some time.โ€

I do what I can without breaking down; I nod.

He scans my face before smiling. โ€œSo, my booty call canceled. How about we stay on video?โ€

This is dangerous territory. If we keep talking, he will pry everything out of my head. But Aiden doesn’t need more stress with their final game coming up.

โ€œI think you might have attachment issues, Crawford.โ€

โ€œAs long as youโ€™re the one Iโ€™m attached to, I wouldnโ€™t call that an issue.โ€ The ruffle of the covers sounds as he settles into bed.

โ€œWhatever you say,ย Captain.โ€ โ€œSay that again.โ€

โ€œCaptain?โ€

โ€œYup, thatโ€™s it. Talk dirty to me, Summer.โ€ I laugh. โ€œShut up.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right. Iโ€™ll shut up, you keep talking.โ€ He smiles, and when I think heโ€™s asleep he moves again. โ€œYour mom called me this morning.โ€

Divya Preston has a saying: โ€˜Clutter in your phone is clutter in your life.โ€™ Finding out Aiden made the cut is oddly satisfying. โ€œWhat did she say?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ll be in Toronto soon, so I should visit when Iโ€™m there. She even offered me your room to stay in.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s trying to replace me because you answer her calls.โ€

Aiden chuckles. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, babe. Eli and I already have an apartment.

But I will check out your childhood bedroom.โ€ โ€œRemind me to have all my posters taken down.โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t tell me you were a teenage fangirl.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask questions youโ€™re not ready for. That room holds some dark secrets,โ€ I warn, and he chuckles wearily. โ€œGo to sleep. I can see the dark circles forming.โ€

โ€œNot true, Iโ€™m flawless.โ€

He actually might be. โ€œGoodnight, my Sleeping Beauty.โ€ โ€œNight, baby,โ€ he murmurs, sleep overtaking him.

THE CHIMING OF emails hitting my inbox jolts me awake. My call with Aiden must have disconnected because my phone is sandwiched between my mattress and the wall. Groggily wiping my eyes, I fish it out, and when I open my email, I hear a knock.

Amaraโ€™s already at the front door, looking at Sampsonโ€™s phone.

Squealing, she almost hugs Sampson but turns to me. โ€œWe did it!โ€

I have been mentally preparing myself for being taken away in handcuffs since the break-in. โ€œWe did?โ€

Sampson beams. โ€œSomeone I know from the committee said sheโ€™s fired.

Theyโ€™re talking to Donny now.โ€

โ€œYou think heโ€™ll get expelled?โ€ asks Amara.

The spark of guilt is unexpected, but Donny used to be someone I cared for. Itโ€™s too bad he had let his greed win.

Sampson slides his phone back into his pocket. โ€œHis parents are loaded, and Langston had all the power in their relationship. But heโ€™ll be punished because students read the article on the gossip page, and theyโ€™re pissed,โ€ he says. โ€œAndย I talked to Mรผller. If Langston approved your application and you’ve been denied or waitlisted, you can reapply with the deanโ€™s approval.โ€ Leaving my dreams and all the people I love for Stanford was so painful that I shoved my feelings deep downโ€”until right now. Hope bubbles up.

โ€œBut what about the investigation?โ€

โ€œSomeone confessed. Mรผller didnโ€™t say who it was.โ€

Relief doesn’t set in, and I hope whoever confessed wonโ€™t get in too much trouble. Part of me knows that letting someone else take the blame will eat away at me until I make it right.

Amara jostles me into a hug again, distracting me from my thoughts. โ€œYouโ€™re not leaving! I was totally getting an army ready to hack admissions for you.โ€

I hug her tighter. โ€œI should tell Aiden the good news, too.โ€ โ€œDefinitely. You should surprise him. Wear something sexy!โ€ Sampson groans.

โ€œHe has practice. Iโ€™m not going to walk in there in lingerie.โ€ โ€œWear a trench coat,โ€ she offers.

โ€œSheโ€™s going to look like a flasher. Please donโ€™t do that,โ€ says Sampson, looking worried about our decision-making skills.

Amara gives him a look. โ€œWhat do you suggest then, Tyler?โ€

โ€œMy jersey,โ€ he grins. โ€œKidding. But you should tell him, heโ€™ll be happy.โ€ Amara and I exchange a look. โ€œYou want him to be happy? Since when?โ€

Iโ€™m stunned by the new discovery.

โ€œSince he started making you smile,โ€ Sampson admits. My awestruck expression makes him roll his eyes, but he allows my hug. โ€œOkay, thatโ€™s my quota for hugs.โ€ He moves out of my grip.

โ€œGo already.โ€ Amara pushes me, and Iโ€™m out of there before she realizes sheโ€™s alone with Sampson.

When I arrive, Iโ€™m looking through the plexi to find him on the ice when I catch Dylan walking in late.

โ€œHey Dylan, I need to talk to Aiden. Is he late?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know?โ€ he asks, and I stare in confusion. โ€œSummer, he was kicked off the team this morning. Kilner didnโ€™t want to, but heโ€™s out for the rest of the season. Heโ€™s done.โ€

My heart drops, and shock swirls in my chest. โ€œIs he okay?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s fine. Well, as fine as he can be after being told heโ€™s missing his last Frozen Four.โ€ He must see my confusion because he goes on. โ€œDonny caught up with him after we got back from Princeton the other day. Aiden confessed to that break-in.โ€

My mouth feels dry, and my bones feel weak when I lose my footing and stumble forward.

Dylan catches my arm. โ€œYou good?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s my fault.โ€

Dylanโ€™s strong hold gives me enough energy to stand on my own. โ€œHe would never let you go down for it, Sunny.โ€

Anger sears my chest. โ€œWhy the hell would he do that?โ€

โ€œHe would do anything for you, you know that. Honestly, if he didnโ€™t, one of us would have.โ€ He squeezes my shoulder. โ€œLook, I gotta go practice, but heโ€™s at the house if you wanna talk to him. Think youโ€™ll be okay to get there?โ€

I nod and head out of the arena, pulling out my phone.

Aiden

Summer: You are so dead, Crawford. Iโ€™m going to strangle you!

Aiden: Yeah? What else?

Summer: Donโ€™t play with me! Iโ€™m coming over.

Aiden: Pants on or off?

God, he is infuriating. But before I can head over to the hockey house, thereโ€™s something I need to do, so I text Amara.

AMARAโ€™S RAGE IS palpable as she storms over to one oblivious guy who startles when she approaches. โ€œRai! You fuck with my best friend again, and I will crush your skinny little bones with a pillowcase full of your textbooks.โ€

He smirks. โ€œBodyguard? Surprised it isnโ€™t your jock.โ€ โ€œShe can call him too,โ€ threatens Amara.

I move forward. โ€œYou did all this just to take my co-op spot? There were students whose futures depended on getting into the program. Shannon Lee left because of what you did!โ€

His face is a mask of indifference. โ€œLast time I checked, Shannon made her own decisions. Besides, with her gone, you had a shot. Though we both know youโ€™ll always come second to me.โ€

โ€œReally? Because Iโ€™m pretty sure youโ€™re the one who had to fuck our professor to secure your spot.โ€

His jaw tightens. โ€œMaybe I just wanted to have some fun.โ€

Anger spreads through my blood like poison. โ€œYou did it on purpose, didnโ€™t you? Instead of threatening me, you went to Aiden. Youโ€™re a fucking coward, Donny.โ€

โ€œCoward or not, Iโ€™m the one who got into the program. Have fun in California, Summer. Maybe you can find another hockey player to fuck your way through your assignments.โ€

My slap that ricochets off his face, sending a sharp sting to my hand. But the pain doesnโ€™t register because of the rage that boils through me.

Donny steps forward, but Amara blocks him with a hand on his chest. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t do that if I were you.โ€

His rough exhale is angry before he takes off.

I turn to Amara. โ€œCan you drive me to Aidenโ€™s?โ€

โ€œAfter a slap like that, Iโ€™ll give you anything,โ€ she laughs.

Aiden

YOU DONโ€™T KNOW your girlfriend’s strength until sheโ€™s absolutely livid. As soon as I open the front door, Iโ€™m pushed back. โ€œHow could you?!โ€

I have to take hold of Summerโ€™s frantic arms. โ€œListenโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, Aiden!โ€ She yanks her arms away. โ€œYou told me not to mess up mine, so why canโ€™t you do the same?โ€

Her anger is burning hot, and to balance some of that heat, I stay calm. โ€œBecause I know how hard youโ€™ve worked for this.โ€

โ€œSo have you! Youโ€™re missing your final game because of me.โ€

Her eyes swim with the hurt I canโ€™t bear to see. The whole point of this was to avoid that. To never see her cry like she did that night in my arms. โ€œBaby,โ€ I start.

โ€œDonโ€™tย babyย me, Aiden. You overstepped.โ€ She jabs a finger at my chest. โ€œThis is my problem!โ€

I take hold of her violent finger. โ€œMy girlfriend was crying in my arms, and you expect me to stand by and do nothing? Fuck, no. Your problems are my problems too.โ€

She lets out a heavy groan as if Iโ€™m the one being difficult. โ€œYou could have been expelled.โ€

โ€œBut I wasnโ€™t. A suspension isnโ€™t that bad.โ€

โ€œIt is when youโ€™re the captain! Why am I the only one concerned about this?โ€ A look of exasperation takes over her angry one. โ€œYou have to retract your confession.โ€

I move to touch her, but I think better of it. โ€œI canโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œYou can. Come with me, we can explain. Theyโ€™ll understand.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sure they would, but I stand by my decision.โ€

She appears indignant. โ€œThis could ruin things with Toronto.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m already signed. But if they want to take action, Iโ€™ll deal.โ€

The crease in the middle of her brows and her glare are hard enough to crack me in two. โ€œYouโ€™re being ridiculous. Think about what youโ€™re doing for one second.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need to because itโ€™s the right choice. Iโ€™ll be okay.โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™tโ€”โ€ She inhales. โ€œYou canโ€™t make decisions on my behalf because you want to save me. I can save myself without putting you in

jeopardy.โ€

โ€œAnd I think if I can help my girlfriend with a problem, I will.โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re being stubborn.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re not? Summer, I did this because I wanted to. Because I love you, and I donโ€™t want anything messing with your dreams.โ€

She blinks away the moisture welling in her eyes. โ€œWhat about your dreams? I care about those too, you know?โ€

Itโ€™s hard not to grab her and kiss the lights out of her. โ€œI know, and thank you, baby, but this wonโ€™t affect my future as much as it would have affected yours.โ€

She pushes me again, not nearly as hard as before. โ€œYouโ€™re crazy. Iโ€™m dating a crazy person!โ€ she exclaims. โ€œWho does that?โ€

โ€œYour boyfriend. Your hot, sexy, kind boyfriend.โ€ I grin, making her glare harden. โ€œYell at me all you want, Summer, but I wouldnโ€™t change what I did.โ€

โ€œThis is your career!โ€ โ€œAnd you are my future.โ€

Summer falters, eyes searching my face.

โ€œI told you that you come first. That hasnโ€™t changed. It wonโ€™t ever change.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™ve worked for this your whole life. You donโ€™t potentially fuck that up for a girl.โ€

A pang of irritation hits my chest. โ€œWhy are you fighting me on this? Iโ€™m not changing my mind.โ€

โ€œBecause you canโ€™t miss the final. Coach is probably pissed.โ€

โ€œHe is. Iโ€™ve been getting angry voicemails all morning because he was too pissed to speak to me in his office. But weโ€™ve already won a Frozen Four. It gets boring after a while.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just saying that to make me feel better.โ€ I take a step closer. โ€œIs it working?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m mad at you, Aiden,โ€ she says, trying to keep her distance.

I clasp her wrists. โ€œOkay, but come a little closer and be mad at me where I can hold you.โ€ She doesnโ€™t protest when I tug her forward, and her hug makes the burn in my chest cool. โ€œYou smell like me,โ€ I say, noticing sheโ€™s wearing my hoodie.

โ€œIโ€™ll have to shower immediately, then,โ€ she mutters. โ€œWhatโ€™s the point if Iโ€™m showering with you?โ€

She groans, pulling away. โ€œWhere is your hockey stick?โ€ โ€œWhy? You wanna test out a new kink?โ€ I smirk.

โ€œYeah, letโ€™s experiment by shoving it up your ass.โ€

โ€œEh, I’ll have to pass on that one. Though, I do have plans for your ass.โ€ I pull her in, and she rests her head on my chest. A perfect concoction of peach scent and me. โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t tell you, but I donโ€™t regret a thing if it means youโ€™re happy,โ€ I say.

โ€œI am happy. Always happy with you.โ€ She tiptoes to meet my lips. โ€œBut I donโ€™t like that you have to suffer to make that happen.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not suffering. The teamโ€™s doing great, and Sampson gets to captain a final.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re okay with that?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not so bad.โ€ Finding out he helped with the break-in had pissed me off for all of three seconds. Eli told me about that night, and I couldn’t blame them. They all had Summerโ€™s back when I couldnโ€™t, and that alone is reason enough to take the blame.

โ€œThatโ€™s not what you were saying a few weeks ago.โ€ โ€œPeople change.โ€

โ€œNot all people,โ€ she mutters, and I raise a brow. โ€œI slapped Donny. But he deserved it,โ€ she admits.

The reveal isnโ€™t nearly as shocking as it should be. The guy had it coming, heโ€™s just lucky it wasn’t my fist. โ€œI donโ€™t doubt that.โ€

Her head tilts, assessing me. โ€œWhat happened to never losing?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m fine with it if youโ€™re the one winning.โ€

She sinks her hands into my hair and kisses me so deeply, I melt into her embrace. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, too. I should have told you about the plan,โ€ she says sheepishly.

I rub my nose against hers. โ€œItโ€™s fine, my little criminal.โ€ She rolls her eyes. โ€œSo, you forgive me?โ€

โ€œDo you even have to ask?โ€

โ€œAnd you still mean all that stuff about the future?โ€ she asks, toying with the strings of my hoodie.

โ€œI fully intend to spend the rest of my life with you, Summer.โ€ โ€œI love you.โ€ She scrunches her nose. โ€œLike, a lot.โ€

โ€œI love you, too, Preston. Like, a lot.โ€
