OUTSIDE THE BUILDINGย that holds the teamโs marketing office, I check the time on my phone. Thereโs a missed call from my parentsโ house. I have a few minutes, so I call them back.
โHi, sweetie,โ my mom answers. โWe just wanted to wish you luck before the big interview!โ
My stomach wobbles. She sounds so hopeful and excited.
โHold on a second. Ken,โ she says, calling to my dad. โGrab the other phone. Itโs Pippa.โ
A moment later, my dad is on the line. โHi, honey. Good luck today. We know youโll do well.โ
I force a weak smile, even though they canโt see me. โThanks.โ
โWeโre so proud of you,โ he says, and I picture his wide smile and bright eyes.
โSoย proud,โ my mom adds. โOnce you get this job, everythingโs going to fall into place. You just watch.โ She sounds so certain. โWithin a couple years, you might even be able to afford an apartment outside the city.โ
I donโt want to live outside the city. I donโt even want to think about buying an apartment yet.
โYou should ask about the benefits,โ my dad says. โAsk what retirement options they have.โ
โOh, and ask about orthodontics.โ
โDefinitely ask about orthodontics,โ my dad confirms. โNot all health plans cover them.โ
I frown. โI already had braces.โ
โNot for you,โ my mom says, โfor your future children.โ
My future children?! I cringe as my mind begins to race. I can barely picture myself at this job in a few years, let alone, like, fifteen. Good lord. This conversation is making things so much worse. Iโm going home for Christmas in a few weeks, and I have a feeling this interview will be the main topic for the entire time Iโm there.
โI have to go,โ I tell them. โIโll talk to you guys later.โ โOkay, bye, sweetie! Good luck!โ my mom chirps.
โDonโt forget to tell them how reliable you are,โ my dad says as a goodbye.
I sigh and stare at the door to the building. I donโt want to do this, but I donโt have another option.
