I made use of the chamber Poppy had originally been placed in to bathe and change into fresh clothing. The water was fucking freezing, but I didnโt want to return to her covered in blood and smelling like death. Hair damp, I stepped back into the hall. Kieran was waiting outside.
He hadnโt been earlier. โSheโs likely asleep again.โ โAgain?โ
โShe fell asleep while bathing,โ he answered.
โYou woke her from aย bath?โ My eyes narrowed.
โShe was in there for quite some time. I called out to her more than
once,โ he explained. โWhen she didnโt answer, I figured I should check on her.โ
โHow did she handle your intrusion?โ
A small smile appeared. โShe said that among her people, it was impolite to stare.โ
I faced him. โAnd were you staring?โ
His smile kicked up a notch. That wasโฆinteresting. โA little.โ His eyes met mine. โI saw her scars. Some of them.โ
I tensed, though not because heโd obviously been staring more than just a little. Anyone else? Theyโd already be dead. But I knew she was self-
conscious of those scars.
โI told her that among my people, scars are never hidden,โ Kieran continued. โThat they are always honored.โ
I relaxed. Poppyโฆshe needed to hear that. Know that. โYouโre lucky she had no weapon on her.โ
Kieran snorted. โBefore her nap, she asked some questions about Atlantia.โ
โI imagine she did.โ I glanced at the closed door. โI told her I was taking her home. To Atlantia.โ
One eyebrow rose. โIs that a part of the plan Iโm not supposed to worry about? Because I am.โ
I went to stand beside him. โI plan to marry her.โ
Kieran slowly turned his head to me. A moment passed, his expression remaining unreadable. โIs that so?โ
I nodded. โWhat happened to her in that cell wonโt happen again if she is my wife. It offers her protection.โ
The other eyebrow rose.
โAnd with her as my wife, the threat of us tearing down all their lies
becomes more real. After all, if the gods have forsaken the Atlantians as the Ascended claim, then surely the Chosenโthe child of the godsโwould not be able to marry one. Itโs more likely the Blood Crown will release my brother.โ
Another moment passed. โAnd?โ
โAnd once Malik is free, Poppy will be free of me.โ I lifted my chin. โI told you that I care about her, so I have no intention of forcing her to remain married to someone she hates.โ
โSomeone she hates?โ Kieran repeated, one side of his lips curling up. โWhen you went to bring her back to the keep, you were with her. I know you were. I smelled you on her.โ
โJust because sheโs attracted to me doesnโt mean she would want to remain married to the man who kidnapped her.โ
โOr set her free,โ he said, to which I frowned. โThatโs a different way to look at what youโve done, isnโt it? Set her free.โ
Watching the snow fall, I supposed that was a lovely revisionist version of how weโd gotten to this point. โI killed those sheโs cared about, both directly and indirectly. I donโt expect nor seek her forgiveness, Kieran. We will not remain husband and wife.โ
โIf you say so.โ
โI know so.โ The back of my neck prickled again, stronger than before. Kieran watched me, head tilted. โYouโve been doing that a lot of late.โ โDoing what?โ
โRubbing the back of your neck.โ
I was? My hand was on the nape of my neck, so yeah, Iโd been doing that. โThink I pulled a muscle.โ
Kieran snorted.
โWhat? Like thatโs not possible?โ
โYeah.โ He looked away. โYou really think Alastir wonโt see through this ploy? Your father?โ
โWell, for starters, I plan to be gone before he gets here. If the snow ends. Weโll leave in the morning if possible. Either way, they wonโt see through thisโif Iโm convincing enough,โ I told him. โWhich I plan to be.โ
Kieranโs eyes narrowed on me. โPlease tell me youโre going to tell her about these plans. That youโre notโโ
โI will announce to those here that we are to marry. That is only to ensure her safety while weโre here.โ
โThatโs smart.โ
โBut she is no longer a pawn, Kieran. She will be fully aware of this ploy,โ I swore.
โAnd if she doesnโt agree to it?โ
I exhaled heavily. โIf she doesnโt, then IโฆI wonโt force her. And I know what that means, what I will be choosing,โ I said before Kieran could. โBut I will just have to convince Poppy to go along with this.โ
Kieran choked on a laugh, and I couldnโt help but smile. โBy the way,โ he said, โyour plan isโฆinsane.โ
โI know.โ I followed his gaze to the snow. โBut not only will it work, itโs the least I can do for her.โ
Kieran was silent for several heartbeats. โBut will it be enough?โ
I knew what he meant. It was something I hadnโt allowed myself to dwell on. Freeing Malik took priority, but bringing him home wouldnโt fix everything in Atlantia, not with us running out of land. Our people had strengthened in the years since the war, replacing the numbers weโd lost and then some. That was good, except it wasnโt. We were running out of territory, and in the not-too-distant future, resources would become limited. If we didnโt expand beyond Spessaโs End, the future of Atlantia would be a troubled one. And besides that, would Malik be ready to take the crown?
My chest hollowed as my throat dried. Heโd be fine. Eventually. I would be there to help him. Our parents. Kieran and everyone else. Heโd just need time.
โNone of Atlantiaโs struggles are Poppyโs,โ I said. โShe is not to be burdened with them.โ
โA Princess who is to remain unburdened by the plight of her kingdom?โ Kieran murmured.
โA Princess in name only,โ I reminded him.
He turned, angling his body toward mine. โIf she goes along with this, that means a part of her accepts the truth about the Ascended, and I donโt know her all that well, but you do. Do you think she will be satisfied with just freedom? While the Ascended continue on?โ he asked. โWill she be
able to remain unburdened?โ
That was a damn good question. One I didnโt have an answer to.
I stepped back. โItโs almost time for supper. Iโm sure sheโs hungry.โ Kieran nodded, his lips curving into a faint smile as he looked away.
โIโll be waiting.โ
Turning, I crossed the hall and entered my chamber, closing the door behind me.
I didnโt make it far at first. I saw her curled on her side, the dark crimson strands of her hair spread across the pillow. The sight of her seemed to rob me of the ability to move.
Sounded fucking silly as hell, but I had to will myself to take a step. I went to her side and sat on the edge of the bed. The movement didnโt wake her. I hadnโt taken that much blood from her, but sheโd been through a lot. She was exhausted, but she needed to eat.
And if I told her about my plans before then? She likely wouldnโt
consume a single bite. She would be mad at me by the end of supper, but I preferred her anger over her being harmed. Besides, I always found myself somewhat bemused by her ire.
There was likely something wrong with me.
I reached over, brushing her hair back from her neck. The two puncture wounds caused a visceral reaction. The sudden, sharp pulse of lust was damn strong. I couldnโt remember ever reacting that way to the sight of my bite before.
My fingers drifted from her cheek to the skin just above the bite.
Poppyโฆthings were just different with her.
Always.
Her eyes fluttered open, locking with mine. She didnโt speak. Neither did I while I waited for her to demand that I not touch her. She didnโt, but I withdrew my hand anyway, knowing better than to push my luck. โHow are you feeling?โ
Poppyโs nose scrunched, and then she laughed.
Completely caught off guard by the reaction, I felt myself grin. โWhat?โ
โI canโt believe youโre asking me if Iโm okay when I stabbed you in the heart.โ
โDo you think you should be asking me that question?โ I countered. When she didnโt answer, my smile spread. โIโm relieved to hear that you care. Iโm perfectly fine.โ
โI donโt care,โ she muttered, sitting up.
โLies,โ I murmured. The thing was, I knew she did. She wouldnโt have taken my pain away earlier if she didnโt, but she didnโtย wantย to care. My chest tightened. I couldnโt blame her for that. โYou didnโt answer my
question.โ
โIโm fine.โ She stared at the dull yellow of the quilt draped over her. โKieran said you dozed off in the bath.โ
โDid he tell you he came into the bathing chamber?โ she asked. โYes.โ
Her gaze shot to mine.
โI trust Kieran,โ I said. โYouโve been asleep for several hours.โ โIs that not normal?โ
โItโs not abnormal. I guess Iโmโฆโ I frowned. โI guess Iโm feeling guilty for biting you.โ
โYou guess?โ she stammered.
I wasnโt sure. If I hadnโt bitten her, I never wouldโve discovered that she was half-Atlantian. Then again, there was a lot with Poppy that I felt guilt for but didnโt regret. โI believe so.โ
โYou should feel guilt!โ she exclaimed.
I raised a brow. โEven though you stabbed me and left me to die?โ Her mouth clamped shut. โYou didnโt die. Obviously.โ โObviously. I was barely winded.โ
โCongratulations.โ Poppy rolled her eyes. Amused, I chuckled.
Poppy, however, was not amused. Shoving the quilt aside, she scooted to the other side of the bed. โWhy are you here? To take me back to the
cell?โ
โI should. If anyone other than Kieran knew you had stabbed me, I would be expected to.โ
Poppy stood. โThen why donโt you?โ โI donโt want to.โ
Her hands opened and closed as she stared. โSo, what now? How is this going to work, Yourย Highness?โ
My jaw clenched.
โYouโll keep me locked up in a room until youโre ready for us to leave?โ she asked.
โDo you not like this room?โ
โItโs far better than a dirty cell, but itโs still a prison,โ she said. โA cage, no matter how nice the accommodations are.โ
She was right. โYou would know, wouldnโt you? After all, youโve been imprisoned since you were a child. Caged and veiled.โ
Surprisingly, she didnโt deny that as she turned to the small window, her arms folded over her chest.
My gaze dropped. The breeches she wore fit her like a second skin. I liked it. A lot. โI came here to escort you to dinner.โ
โEscort me to dinner?โ Her eyes widened.
โI feel like thereโs an echo in this room, but yes, I imagine youโre hungry,โ I said. โAnd weโll discuss what will happen next when we have some food in our stomachs.โ
โNo.โ
โNo?โ I repeated. When there was no further explanation, I stretched out on my side, plopping my cheek on my fist. โYou have to be hungry.โ
Poppy shook her head, but the act didnโt match her words. โI am hungry.โ
I sighed. โThen whatโs the problem, Princess?โ
โI donโt want to eat with you. Thatโs the problem.โ
I fought a grin. โWell, itโs a problem youโre going to have to get over because itโs your only option.โ
โSee, thatโs where youโre wrong. I have options.โ She turned from me. Big mistake.
I rose silently.
โIโd rather starve than eat with you,ย Your Highnessโโ Poppy squeaked as I stepped in front of her. โGods,โ she gasped, pressing her hand to her chest.
โThatโs where youโre wrong, Princess.โ I met her stare. โYou donโt have options when it comes to your own well-being and your own foolish
stubbornness.โ
Her brows shot up. โExcuse me?โ
โI wonโt let you weaken or starve yourself because youโre mad. And I do get it. I get why youโre upset. Why you want to fight me on everything, every step of the way.โ I took a step toward her. She didnโt back down. Her chin lifted, and I knew she was digging in for a fight, but little did she
know, it wouldnโt get the desired effect. โI want you to, Princess. I enjoy it.โ Poppy blinked. โYouโre twisted.โ
โNever said I wasnโt. So, fight me. Argue with me. See if you can actually injure me next time.โ I paused. โI dare you.โ
Her arms unfolded. โYouโreโฆthereโs something wrong with you.โ โThat may be true, but what is also true, is the fact that I will not let you
put yourself in unnecessary danger.โ
โMaybe youโve forgotten, but I can handle myself,โ she retorted.
โI havenโt forgotten. I will never stop you from lifting a sword to protect yourself or those you care about,โ I told her. โBut I wonโt let you drive that sword through your own heart just to make a point.โ
She was silent for a moment as she seemed to process what I said, then let out a frustrated shriek. โOf course, you wonโt! What good am I to you dead? I suppose you still plan to use me to free your brother.โ
โYou are nothing to me if youโre dead,โ I snapped, my irritation flaring up. That wasnโt at all what Iโd meant.
Poppyโs sharp inhale felt like a lash against my skin. This was not the best way to start.
โCome on. The food will get cold.โ I took her hand, but she didnโt move. โDonโt fight me on this, Poppy. You need to eat, and my people need to see that you have my protection if you want any chance of not being locked in a room all day.โ
Poppy clearly wanted to fight, but in this, she relented. For now.
