Chapter no 72 – I WAS RIGHT

A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

Our return to Haven Keep didnโ€™t go unnoticed. Everyone simply made

themselves scarce as I crossed the courtyard in the falling snow with Poppy cradled to my chest.

Except for Kieran.

He stood at the second-floor railing, his arms folded across his chest.

Our eyes locked. He raised a brow at the sight of me, shirtlessโ€”at the sight of us.

โ€œYou can put me down,โ€ Poppy muttered. โ€œI can walk.โ€

That was not the first time sheโ€™d said that. It was more likeโ€ฆthe twentieth. Iโ€™d ignored the nineteen variations that came before. โ€œIf I do that, your pants will fall right off you.โ€ I kicked open the door to the stairwell. โ€œAnd then you would expose your thighsโ€”your very lovely thighs.โ€

The flush in her face was visible, even in the darkened stairwell. โ€œOnly because you destroyed my clothing.โ€

โ€œBe that as it may, I doubt you want to flash anyone.โ€ I paused mid-step, glancing down at her. โ€œOr is that what youโ€™d prefer?โ€

Poppy blew out an exasperated breath. โ€œNo. That is not what I prefer.โ€ I grinned as I started back up the steps. โ€œI didnโ€™t think so.โ€

She was quiet as we rounded the landing and I climbed the remaining steps. I imagined she was reliving the moment sheโ€™d plunged the dagger into my chest. Truth be told, her pants werenโ€™t the reason Iโ€™d insisted on carrying her. After all, I wouldnโ€™t complain if she flashed me. Her thighs were so very lush. But the snow was coming down in sheets, soaking the rest of her clothing. She was cold. Hell, I was even getting cold. But keeping her close also kept her as warm as possible. Plus, I was faster.

Entering the second-floor hall, her hands curled tighter in the shirt she now wore, and her face burned brighter. I shifted her higher, allowing her

cheek to reach my shoulder. She turned her head, pressing her forehead against me.

It wasnโ€™t necessary for her to hide her face, though. Kieranโ€™s attention remained fixed on the heavy snowfall and the forest beyond.

Wanting her in my chamber since it was bigger and a bit nicer, I passed the room sheโ€™d been kept in and took her to mine. A faint smile tugged at my lips. Kieran had cleaned up the blood.

And removed the dagger Iโ€™d plunged into the floor. Smart move there.

I carried Poppy to the much larger bed and set her down, grateful that the flames in the fireplace were still strong. As I straightened, her mouth opened. โ€œI know you have questions,โ€ I cut in. โ€œI will answer them, but

there are a few things I need to take care of.โ€

Poppyโ€™s lips pinched but she didnโ€™t argue for once. Turning from her, I stopped with my hand on the door, once more reluctant to leave her. I looked back at her. She was still where Iโ€™d put her, hands now resting on the bed.

โ€œIโ€™ll be back,โ€ I promised, then stepped out into the hall. Forced myself. Dragging a hand through my damp hair, I turned to Kieran.

โ€œDo I even want to know why she is wearing your shirt and you are without one?โ€ Kieran asked.

โ€œProbably not.โ€ Lowering my hand, I joined him at the railing. โ€œThank you for cleaning up the room.โ€

Kieran nodded. โ€œNo one needs to smell your blood.โ€

A wry smile tugged at my lips as I rested my hands on the railing. โ€œI need you to watch over her for a little bit.โ€

โ€œYou trust me with that?โ€ was all he asked. He likely already knew what I intended to do. โ€œAfter I wanted to go after her?โ€

โ€œBut you didnโ€™t,โ€ I reminded him. โ€œAnd you wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œBecause sheโ€™sโ€ฆโ€ Kieran looked at me then. โ€œHow did you say it? โ€˜She is mine?โ€™โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not exactly why.โ€ I rolled my neck. โ€œSheโ€™s half-Atlantian.โ€ Kieran pushed back from the railing. โ€œYou are certain?โ€

โ€œI tasted her blood. Iโ€™m sure.โ€

His forehead creased as his brows lifted. โ€œWell, I have a lot of questions about that.โ€

โ€œI bet you do.โ€ The snow was already well on its way to covering the

tracks Iโ€™d left. โ€œBut whatโ€™s important right now is that sheโ€™s one of usโ€”and,

Kieran, the part of her thatโ€™s Atlantian? Itโ€™sย strong. Look at my chest,โ€ I said, and he did just that. โ€œThe wound is far more healed than it normally would be.โ€

Kieran stared, then his gaze cut to the door Iโ€™d exited from. โ€œDamn.โ€ He ran his hand over his hair, clasping the back of his neck. โ€œIt explains so much. Her abilities. Why the Ascended want her.โ€

โ€œIt does.โ€ I looked down at my hands. They were still stained with blood. Fresh streaks would join them soon. โ€œAnd it doesnโ€™t.โ€

It took a moment for Kieran to understand. โ€œHer parents? Her brotherโ€ฆโ€

I nodded slowly. There was no way they were her parentsโ€”at least one of them couldnโ€™t have been. But Ian? He could still be a half brother.

Regardless, all of this would still come as a blow.

Kieran squinted. โ€œThey planned to use her to Ascend the Lords and Ladies in Wait? But why? They have Malik. Theyโ€ฆโ€

I tensed all over. I knew what he was thinking. That they needed Poppy because Malik wasโ€ฆ โ€œHeโ€™s still alive.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say he wasnโ€™t.โ€

My heart thumped heavily. โ€œHeโ€™s probably weakened, and using him to Ascend all those in Wait would likely kill him. Thatโ€™s why they need Poppy. Itโ€™s the only thing that makes sense, especially if her blood is strong.โ€

โ€œAnd for them to know that, they must haveโ€ฆโ€

Drank from her at some point, likely without her knowledge. My hands tightened on the cold railing until I heard the wood groan. I pushed away. โ€œThis wonโ€™t take too long.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re wrong, by the way,โ€ Kieran stated when I was halfway down the hall.

I stopped, looking back at him.

โ€œThe reason I wonโ€™t hurt her has nothing to do with her being half- Atlantian or because sheโ€™s one of us.โ€ Kieran faced me. โ€œIt has everything to do with the fact that I was right.โ€

I lifted my brows. โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œYou. Her.โ€ His head tilted to the side, and when he spoke again, his

voice was low. โ€œSheโ€™s yours, and you care about her. Thatโ€™s why. And donโ€™t even try to deny it. Not after the lengths youโ€™ve gone to in order to keep her safe.โ€ He took a step forward. โ€œThe lengths you are about to go to, to ensure that what happened in that cell doesnโ€™t happen again.โ€

A faint tickle of sensation hit the nape of my neck. There was no point in denying it. โ€œI do. I care about her.โ€

Kieran smiled like a kid whoโ€™d just run off with a handful of sweets. โ€œThat wasnโ€™t the reaction I expected,โ€ I stated, tone dry.

โ€œHonestly?โ€ He lifted his hands. โ€œIโ€™m relieved.โ€ My brows inched up. โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. It proves you arenโ€™t the piece of shit I knew you werenโ€™t.โ€ โ€œHow in the fuck does it prove that?โ€

โ€œBecause being with her wasnโ€™t about getting off. Itโ€™s because you care about her. That changes things.โ€

Everythingย hadย changed.

Kieran shook his head. โ€œIn any other situation, it would be funny for you to fall for herโ€”โ€

โ€œFall for her?โ€ My stomach dipped as if I were standing on the edge of the cliffs in the Skotos. โ€œI said I care about her, Kieran. I didnโ€™t say Iโ€™d fallen in love with her. Lust? Yes. Respect and admiration for her? Fuck

yes.โ€

Kieranโ€™s brows creased further as he looked at me like I was missing half a brain. โ€œWhat do you think lust, respect, admiration, and caring for someone adds up to?โ€

โ€œNot what you think it does. Maybe for some people, but not me. I donโ€™t

โ€”โ€ I stopped myself, but what I didnโ€™t say hung in the air between us.

I didnโ€™t deserve to be in loveโ€”to experience that. Not after my actions had led to Malikโ€™s capture. Not after Shea. Not with all the blood on my hands. Not after what Iโ€™d done to Poppy.

And Kieran knew that. He just didnโ€™t want to say it. However, this otherwise pointless conversation about love and shit sparked an idea. A

fucking insane one, but one that would not only give me what I needed and Poppy what she deserved, but so much more.

โ€œCas,โ€ Kieran started.

I held up my hand, stopping him. My mind raced, filling in the blanks.

This would give Poppy all the protection sheโ€™d ever need and then some while ensuring the Blood Crown did anything they could to prevent the

knowledge of what she was. No one would dare touch herโ€”not Atlantian or Descenter. Not even my father. My lips curved up.

โ€œWhy are you smiling like that?โ€ Kieran asked.

โ€œLook, I do care about her, but thatโ€™s not the point here. She is one of us, and thereโ€™s no way they didnโ€™t know that.โ€ I crossed the space, stopping in front of him. โ€œThink about what that means.โ€

โ€œFor once, Iโ€™m not sure I follow.โ€

โ€œThe Blood Crown rules through lies, Kieran. Everything about them and everything they tell their people is a lie. And Poppy?โ€ I jerked my chin at the chamber door. โ€œShe is the foundation of those lies.โ€

Kieranโ€™s eyes widened as it began to click. โ€œTheyโ€™ve told the people sheโ€™s Chosen by the gods and, fuck, maybe she is, but we know sheโ€™s half- Atlantian.โ€

โ€œAnd based on the lies theyโ€™ve told? Wouldnโ€™t that make her half-

monster?โ€ I said, smirking. โ€œAnd wouldnโ€™t they do anything to prevent that knowledge from getting out?โ€

Kieran nodded as a slow smile began tipping up his lips. โ€œFuck yeah, they would, because if itโ€™s revealed that sheโ€™s part Atlantian?โ€ He huffed out a laugh. โ€œIt would begin their end, collapsing all their other lies.โ€ His smile faded. โ€œBut how are you going to prove that? Better yet, how are we going to keep her alive? Alastir will still come, and half-Atlantian or not, your father could still make demands.โ€

โ€œMy father can.โ€ I started backing up, my smile spreading. โ€œBut he wonโ€™t.โ€

Kieran stiffened. โ€œCas.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ I told him. โ€œI have a plan.โ€ โ€œBut thatย doesย worry me.โ€

I laughed, the sound traveling down the hall. โ€œKeep watch over her.โ€

Leaving Kieran to do just that, I made my way to the main floor of the keep. I found Magda and Elijah in his study.

The bearded Descenter looked up from the ledgers piled on his desk. โ€œNot sure if you realize this or not, but youโ€™re half-undressed.โ€

โ€œAnd it appears as if youโ€™ve been stabbed.โ€ Magdaโ€™s hand fluttered to her belly. โ€œIn the chest.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine, but speaking of clothing, is it possible for you to find something that would fit Penellaphe?โ€

Magda frowned as she rose from her chair. โ€œIs the clothing I brought before unable to be laundered?โ€

My lips pursed. โ€œThat would be a no.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ She drew out the word. โ€œDo you need clothing?โ€

โ€œLikely, but that can wait. First, can you have hot water sent to my chambers? Kieran is there with her, and she will remain there.โ€

โ€œOh, man,โ€ Elijah murmured while Magda nodded.

โ€œAnd bloodstone.โ€ I looked at Elijah. โ€œIโ€™m going to need bloodstone.

Lots of it.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going down to the cells?โ€ Elijah asked.

โ€œNo,โ€ I said. โ€œI want them brought to the Great Hall.โ€

He stood, rubbing his chin through his beard. โ€œOh, man, oh, man.โ€ I smiled.

It didnโ€™t take long to wrangle a couple dozen bloodstone stakes. Theyโ€™d been placed in a canvas bag and dropped in the center of the Great Hall, the space all had to pass through to enter the dining hall. It was empty now except for Delano, the doors closed on either end.

โ€œYou feeling up to this?โ€ I asked him as I waited.

Delano nodded, the set of his jaw hard. There was nothing boyish about his features. โ€œIโ€™m more than feeling up to this.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ I glanced at him. โ€œIโ€™m glad youโ€™re okay.โ€

โ€œSo am I.โ€ A quick grin appeared. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t be if it werenโ€™t for her.

She saved my life, Cas, and she didnโ€™t have to,โ€ he said, and I had a feeling that was why he was so willing to carry this out. โ€œI owe her. You know what that means.โ€

I did know what it meant when a wolven made that pledge. It was damn near an unbreakable oath. He would guard her with his life. Even against me, if it came to it.

I glanced at the door, hearing footsteps. I bent, reaching into the canvas.

My fingers curled around a smooth bloodstone spike. โ€œYou never have to worry about me harming her, Delano.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ he said, stretching his neck from side to side. โ€œThat I know.โ€ The door opened, and a trembling mortal was escorted inside.

One who had been given a second chance to live out his life with his wife and child.

Heโ€™d thrown that away.

Naill and Elijah let go of Mr. Tulis. The man staggered forward, his hands not bound but clasped. His wide, frightened eyes were unfocused. โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not here to apologize. We are past that.โ€ I went to where he stood, each step slow and measured. โ€œShe had nothing to do with what

happened to your other children, nor did she have anything to do with the Rite.โ€

โ€œShe is the Maidenโ€”โ€

I caught him by the throat, silencing him. โ€œHer name is Penellaphe Balfour. You should know the name of the person who felt sorrow for you and your family. You should know the name of the one you plotted to kill.โ€

I lifted him to the tips of his toes. โ€œAnd you should know the name of the one I told you not to harm.โ€

His eyes bulged. โ€œI-Iโ€™mโ€”โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I tightened my grip. โ€œYou threw away your life, not that of your wife or son. Let that be your last thought as you leave this realm.โ€

With the spike in my other hand, I drove it through his chest, the

bloodstone slicing through mortal tissue and bone like warm butter. His death wasnโ€™t instantaneousโ€”I left the spike in, after allโ€”but it was quicker than he deserved. He was dead before I impaled him to the wall.

They brought the next one in. Ivan. He already knew what was coming. Didnโ€™t say a word. He didnโ€™t beg or fight, and he, too, ended up on the wall. The rest were brought in, one after another. Wolven. Atlantian. Mortal.

Some fought, swinging fists, baring fangs, and shifting into their wolven forms. Some pleaded, dropping to their knees. Some were already dead, having been dealt with during the attack. They all ended up the same. A spike to the chest or head and hanging on the wall.

I showed them more kindness than theyโ€™d shown Poppy. Those alive all died either immediately or within minutes, and I didnโ€™t feel a fucking ounce of remorse. None ofย themย did. All they felt was regret for the life theyโ€™d forfeited: theirs.

Blood splattered both Delanoโ€™s and my chest when Elijah and Naill dragged in the last one.

Jericho.

They shoved him forward. The wolven caught himself before toppling over. His pale blue eyes widened as he saw the wall of the Great Hall.

โ€œCas,โ€ he said, lifting both arms. โ€œWe canโ€”โ€

โ€œWe can do what, Jericho?โ€ I flipped a spike in my hand. โ€œTalk this

out?โ€ I laughed. โ€œWe are beyond that, my friend. You were warned, and you were given grace.โ€ I pointed at his stump. โ€œAnd yet you betrayed me. Not once, but twice.โ€

โ€œBetrayed you?โ€ Jericho stiffened, his skin thinning. Beside me, Delano sighed. He was going to shift. โ€œI have stood beside you forย years. Iโ€™ve done all youโ€™ve asked and more.โ€

โ€œAnd yet youย continuouslyย did the thing I asked you not to do. I know I sound repetitive, but you were warned multiple times not to touch her.โ€ I flipped the spike again. โ€œYou only lived the first time because Kieran managed to talk me out of killing you. He didnโ€™t even try this time.โ€

โ€œOf course, he didnโ€™t,โ€ Jericho snarled, voice guttural. โ€œIf youโ€™re getting your dick wet in the Maiden, then so is heโ€”โ€ He yelped, falling backward under the force of the spike I threw. He hit the floor hard. โ€œFuck.โ€

I prowled toward him. โ€œYou know what the funny thing is, Jericho?โ€ As he reached for the spike, I stomped my foot down on his right arm, breaking the bones. โ€œI always knew I would kill you one day.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆyou missed my heart,โ€ he grunted. โ€œYou prick. Iโ€ฆI never thought youโ€™d kill meโ€ฆover the fucking Maiden,โ€ he rasped, blood trickling from his mouth.

โ€œNo.โ€ I pushed down harder with my foot. Another bone crunched. Jericho screamed. โ€œI wasnโ€™t aiming for your heart, you fucking cunt.โ€

Understanding dawned, and then,ย thenย I saw fear. I gave his ruined arm one more punishing grind of my boot before stepping back. Delano was there, grasping Jericho by the arm.

โ€œYou will live,โ€ I told him. โ€œUntil Iโ€™m ready for you to die.โ€

โ€œHow can youโ€ฆdo this?โ€ Jericho growled, snapping at Delano as Elijah took hold of his other arm. They lifted him as I went to the canvas bag and pulled out two more spikes. โ€œYouโ€™re making a mistakeโ€”โ€

โ€œYou never learn, do you?โ€ Delano snarled. โ€œCan you at least shut the fuck up?โ€

โ€œHow about you suck myโ€”?โ€ Jericho yelped as Delano drove his knee into said cock.

Elijah laughed. โ€œDamn, my little marshmallowโ€™s getting kinda crispy.โ€

With Naillโ€™s help, they got him to the wall, holding his arms outstretched. Jericho, of course, did not shut the fuck up. โ€œYouโ€™ve allโ€ฆ betrayed your kin andโ€ฆkingdom. And for what? Sheโ€™sโ€ฆbasically the Ascended.โ€

โ€œShe is not,โ€ I said, thrusting a spike through his forearm. He shouted.

His lips peeled back over bloodstained teeth. โ€œYouโ€ฆyou think you can just will peopleโ€ฆinto forgetting what she is?โ€

I sighed.

โ€œSheโ€™ll never beโ€ฆsafe here!โ€ he shouted, spitting blood as it coursed down his chest.

โ€œOh, yes, she will be.โ€ I drove the final spike through his remaining hand as the others backed off.

โ€œYouโ€™re outโ€ฆof your mind,โ€ he swore, breathing labored. โ€œIf youโ€ฆ really think that.โ€

โ€œI know it.โ€ I caught his jaw, forcing his head back against the wall as I leaned in close and whispered the truth about Poppy and what Iโ€™d planned.

And Jericho?

That motherfucker finally shut his mouth.
