I waited until the Duchessโs guard left the hall outside Poppyโs room before I approached her door.
Reaching for the handle, I stopped. I doubted I was interrupting anything. Poppy was likely sitting by the window. That was all sheโd been doing since she left her chambers in the middle of the night to seek revenge.
Poppy had grown even quieter than usual, more withdrawn. The jut of her chin more stubborn. Not once since Iโd seen her awake had she cried or had her eyes even looked glassy. At first, I thought that was good.
But now?
I didnโt think so.
The gods knew I was no expert when it came to dealing with oneโs emotionsโobviouslyโbut sheโd lost someone important to her. That pain didnโt go away simply upon waking.
Knocking on the door, I gave it a moment and then entered. Poppy was by the window as I expected, but as I stood there, taking in her tired eyes and paler-than-normal skin tone, something occurred to me.
She hadnโt donned that damn veil in the days since she woke. Poppyโs eyes narrowed. โWhat?โ
I crossed my arms. โNothing.โ โThen why are you here?โ
Her churlishness threatened to bring a smile to my face. One that would likely irritate her further. โDo I need a reason?โ
โYes.โ
โI donโt.โ I had a reason to be in her chambers this time; however, she was actually speaking instead of staring at me silently.
โAre you just checking to make sure I havenโt figured a way out of the room?โ
โI know you canโt get out of this room, Princess.โ
โDonโt call me that,โ she snapped.
I fought a grin but welcomed the anger over the silence. โIโm going to take a second to remind myself that this is progress.โ
Poppy frowned. โProgress with what?โ
โWith you,โ I told her. โYouโre not being very nice, but at least youโre talking. Thatโs progress.โ
โIโm not being mean,โ she shot back. โI just donโt like to be called that.โ โUh-huh.โ
โWhatever.โ Poppy looked away, squirming a little on the stone ledge.
I watched her as she stared down at her hands, the tension seeping from her rigid shoulders. I quietly moved closer. She lookedโฆI wasnโt sure. A
little lost? Or maybe stuck between anger and grief. I knew that feeling. โI get it,โ I told her.
โYou do?โ Her brows rose. โYou understand?โ โIโm sorry.โ
โFor what?โ The coldness had faded from her voice.
โI said this to you before, shortly after everything, but I donโt think you heard me,โ I said. โI shouldโve said it again sooner. Iโm sorry for everything that has happened. Vikter was a good man. Despite the last words we exchanged, I respected him.โ I meant every word. โAnd Iโm sorry that I couldnโt do anything.โ
She stiffened. โHawkeโโ
โI donโt know if me being thereโlike I shouldโve beenโwouldโve changed the outcome,โ I continued, โbut Iโm sorry that I wasnโt. That there was nothing I could do by the time Iย didย get there. Iโm sorryโโ
โYou have nothing to apologize for.โ She rose, her hands falling to the skirt of her gown. โI donโt blame you for what happened. Iโm not mad at you.โ
โI know.โ Part of me wished she was. I looked away from her, finding the Rise in the distance. โBut that doesnโt change that I wish I wouldโve done something that couldโve prevented this.โ
โThere are a lot of things I wish I wouldโve done differently,โ she shared. โIf Iโd gone to my roomโโ
โIf youโd gone to your room, this still wouldโve happened. Donโt put
this on yourself.โ I turned to her. She was staring at her hands. I placed my fingers beneath her chin, gently lifting her stare to mine. โYouโre not to
blame for this, Poppy. Not at all. If anything, Iโโ My heart lurched, and
my throat dried. What had I been about to say? I drew in a shallow breath. โDonโt take on the blame that belongs to others. You understand?โ
Her weary eyes searched mine. โTen.โ โWhat?โ
โTen times, youโve called me Poppy.โ
I grinned, relaxing a little bit. โI like calling you that, but I like calling youย Princessย more.โ
โShocker,โ she replied.
My gaze tracked over the lines of her brows, the delicate arch of them, and the proud scar cutting through the left one. I thought about how Iโd felt after Malik had been takenโafter Sheaโs death. There had been moments when Iโd felt too much, and others when I felt nothing at all. And the latter? There had been shame in that. I imagined she was going through something similar. Grief, then nothing, and perhaps even normalcy, then guilt for feeling somewhat okay.
Holding her gaze, I lowered my chin. โItโs okay, you know?โ โWhat is?โ
โEverything that youโre feeling and everything that youโre not.โ
Her chest rose with a sharp inhale, then she moved fast, wrapping her
arms around me. A jolt of surprise ran through me, but before I knew it, my arms were around her. I embraced her as tightly as she held me, folding my hand around the back of her head as she pressed her cheek to my chest. She needed this.
Maybe I did, too.
We held each other for a while, and I thought that maybe in a different life, I wouldโve been built just for this.
But this wasnโt my life. And it wouldnโt be hers.
Leaning back, I caught sight of the wisps of hair that always seemed to escape her braid. I smoothed them back. โI did come here with a purpose. The Duchess needs to speak with you.โ
Poppy briefly closed her eyes. โAnd youโre just telling me now?โ โFigured what we had to say to each other was far more important.โ โI donโt think the Duchess would agree,โ she said. โItโs time for me to
find out how Iโll be punished for what Iโฆfor what I did to the Lord, isnโt it?โ
I frowned. โIf I thought I was delivering you for punishment, I wouldnโt be taking you there.โ
Her eyes widened. โWhere would you take me?โ
โSomewhere far from here,โ I said, a little stunned by the truth of my words. It caused a lurching sensation in my chest again. โYouโre being summoned because word has come from the capital.โ
