Chapter no 42 – JUST A NAME

A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to follow me,โ€ Poppy said as she walked ahead, her dark cloak blending into the darkness of Wisherโ€™s Grove. โ€œI know my way back to the castle.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ I kept pace, a step behind her. โ€œBut what kind of guard would I be if I let you walk through the woods all alone and at night?โ€

โ€œA less annoying one?โ€

The retort brought a genuine laugh.

โ€œIโ€™m glad you find that amusing.โ€ Her hooded head turned slightly. โ€œBecause I donโ€™t.โ€

I was glad she was speaking again. Sheโ€™d been quiet as we left the Atheneum, which had allowed my mind to wander to unsettling places, like how the earlier need and then want to seduce her hadnโ€™t felt mutually exclusive.

You care about her.

Fucking Kieran.

โ€œYou know what I find amusing?โ€ I asked. โ€œI cannot wait to hear.โ€

A grin played on my lips as I kept scanning the shadows for any stray Ascended. โ€œHow you manage to dull your tongue with everyone else.โ€

โ€œThat amuses you?โ€ She skirted an outcropping of boulders.

โ€œOnly because I imagine that whatever youโ€™re thinking during those moments would burn the ears of sailors.โ€

She snorted. โ€œSometimes.โ€ The hem of her cloak snagged on a bush.

Being the helpful albeit annoying guard I was, I untangled it for her. โ€œThank you,โ€ she murmured, clutching the diary to her chest.

โ€œYou sound a bit more genuine than the last time you thanked me,โ€ I pointed out.

โ€œI was genuine then, too.โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€

Her heavy sigh made me smile. She walked ahead, avoiding the jagged rocks and uneven terrain one would only know if they often traveled this section of Wisherโ€™s Grove. โ€œItโ€™s not easy,โ€ she said after a couple of moments.

โ€œWhatโ€™s not?โ€

Poppy didnโ€™t answer right away. โ€œStaying quiet,โ€ she said. โ€œDulling my tongue.โ€

I almost asked why she did it, but I already knew the answer. It was the same reason she allowed the Priestess to mistreat her. She had no choice.

โ€œAnyway,โ€ she continued, clearing her throat, โ€œdid you know these woods are rumored to be haunted? At least that is what Tawny believes.โ€

I let the change of subject go. โ€œI have a friend who thinks the same.โ€ โ€œYou have friends?โ€

I laughed. โ€œYes, I know. Shocking, isnโ€™t it?โ€

A soft sound came from the depths of her hood, one that couldโ€™ve been a laugh. Did she ever laughโ€”one that was loud and uncontrolled? I didnโ€™t know, but Iโ€ฆI hadnโ€™t laughed or even smiled as easily as I did around her in a very long time.

I didnโ€™t know whyย thatย was, either.

Rubbing at my chest, I stepped over a few fallen branches and pushed those thoughts aside. โ€œSo, you like to read?โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆI do.โ€

โ€œWhat do you like to read? Other than extremely detailed tellings of thick, throbbingโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll read anything,โ€ she cut in quickly. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t always have to be something likeโ€ฆlike that, and Iโ€™ve read mostly everything that Iโ€™m allowed to read.โ€

โ€œAllowed?โ€ I questioned.

โ€œPriestess Analia believes that I should only spend time reading appropriate things, like the histories or prayers.โ€

โ€œPriestess Analia can go fuck herself.โ€

Poppy laughed thenโ€”it was short and full of surprise but loud and real.

And I was glad she had, but there was nothing humorous about that Priestess.

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t say that,โ€ she said, her voice lighter. โ€œYeah, I know.โ€

โ€œBut you donโ€™t care?โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€

โ€œIt must be an amazing feeling not to.โ€

The wistfulness in her voice drew my gaze and caused pressure in my chest to build. โ€œI wish you knew the feeling.โ€

Her hooded head cut toward me and then faced forward again. Silence fell between us, and it wasnโ€™t good because I was thinking of how Poppy was onlyย allowedย to read certain things, as if she were a child or not trusted to choose for herself. There truly was nothing the Ascended didnโ€™t control when it came to her.

Well, that wasnโ€™t exactly true. The fact that we were strolling through

the Grove after sheโ€™d snuck out was proof, as was the time sheโ€™d stolen for herself at the Red Pearl. But those were just minutes here and there over the years.

It wasnโ€™t right.

But it would change whenโ€”

I stopped myself, a prickle running down the back of my neck. What would happen to her once I got what I wanted? Sheโ€™d be sent back to those monstersโ€”the false Queen and King. Her life would either go back to what it was or become even more restrictive as the Blood Crown hunted for more Atlantian blood to fuel their Ascensions. At least until they were stopped. The only difference would be the location of her gilded cage, and sheโ€™d no longer suffer under the Duke. But there were far worse Ascended in the capital, and that, I knew for certain.

I gazed at her hooded figure, my heart pounding. How would she react when she learned the truth about the Ascendedโ€”about her beloved Queen Ileana? Sheโ€™d eventually uncover the truth, probably sooner rather than later. From what I already knew, I doubted sheโ€™d continue to play along with the charade the Ascended had built around her. But what then?

Once I had Malik, couldnโ€™t I offer her a choice? She could stay with us. But that would be complicated, introducing a whole new set of risks that neither my people nor I needed. Theyโ€™d committed to freeing Malik, not both him and the Maiden. And would my people accept her? Probably not. Atlantians were known to hold grudges as well as anyone.

Fuck. Now wasnโ€™t the time to think about any of that shit.

โ€œThereโ€™s something Iโ€™ve been wondering.โ€ Spying several low-hanging branches, I moved so I walked to her left. โ€œWhat is it that you do every

morning?โ€

โ€œMy daily prayers.โ€ Her hooded head tilted toward mine. โ€œAnd breakfast.โ€

I reached out, holding one of the branches up so she could pass underneath. โ€œWould you be angry if I said I didnโ€™t believe you?โ€

Poppy huffed. โ€œIโ€™ve given you no reason not to believe what I say.โ€ โ€œReally?โ€ I drawled, lifting another branch. โ€œI think I know.โ€

โ€œDo you?โ€

โ€œI just need to ask one question to be sure,โ€ I said as we crossed under thinner branches. Streaks of moonlight pierced the darkness all around us. โ€œDoes Vikter happen to be with you during yourโ€ฆprayers?โ€

Poppy said absolutely nothing.

I smiled, getting my answer without her confirming it. She was likely training how to use that dagger and to fight when she was with him.

โ€œI was wondering something myself,โ€ she said, both arms folded over the book now as if she worried Iโ€™d snatch it from her once more. โ€œAbout you.โ€

โ€œYes. I find women who can wield a dagger and nearly knock me on my ass to be extremely alluring,โ€ I answered, glancing in her direction. โ€œAnd

arousing.โ€

Her soft inhale turned into a gasp as she tripped over something in the foliage. I caught her upper arm, steadying her.

โ€œI was not going to ask that.โ€ She quickly recovered, clearing her throat. โ€œItโ€™s true, though.โ€

โ€œThat, I couldnโ€™t care less about.โ€

Little liar. My hand slipped away from her cloak. โ€œWhat were you wondering?โ€

She was quiet again for a few moments. โ€œYouโ€ฆyou called me Poppy back there, in the Atheneum.โ€

I had?

โ€œYouโ€™d been calling me Penellaphe,โ€ she continued. โ€œWhy?โ€ โ€œDoes it bother you?โ€ I asked.

โ€œNo.โ€ She peeked at me from under the hood. โ€œYou didnโ€™t answer the question.โ€

I couldnโ€™t answer the question. Hell, I hadnโ€™t even realized that Iย had

called her Poppy. Or that I now thought of her as such. I frowned. It didnโ€™t

matter. A name was just a name. โ€œIโ€™m not sure why.โ€ I remembered what Tawny had said. โ€œI suppose that means weโ€™re friends.โ€

There was another soft inhale, betraying her sharp words. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t go that far.โ€

I chuckled. โ€œI would.โ€ Poppy sighed.

Another laugh left me. โ€œWe are most definitely friends.โ€
