Chapter no 16 – IT IS DONE

A Soul of Ash and Blood (A Blood and Ash Book 5)

โ€œIt is done.โ€

I stopped at the top of the Rise, facing the moonlight-drenched-crimson leaves of the Blood Forest. I didnโ€™t necessarily feel satisfaction or relief upon learning of another death, one that had happened upon my orders. I only felt determination.

โ€œWhich one?โ€ I asked. โ€œKeal.โ€

Jansenโ€™s tone and the way he chewed up the guardโ€™s name and then spit it out caused the back of my neck to tighten. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

The changeling exhaled harshly. โ€œDid the plans change?โ€

My brows snapped together as I looked over my shoulder. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

The Commander stood a few feet behind me, but he stared out over the city. โ€œAs far as I recall, the plans were to open a position among the Maidenโ€™s personal guards. Not to attempt to take the Maiden. There was to be no contact with her.โ€

Son of a bitch.

I stretched my neck to the left and then the right. โ€œThat would be correct.โ€

There was a pause as he angled his body closer, aware of the others on the Rise. โ€œHe tried to take her.โ€

Anger heated my blood so fast that it took a moment for me to fully realize what heโ€™d said. Jericho hadย triedย to take her. โ€œHe failed?โ€

โ€œShe fought back.โ€

My head snapped to his as icy shock doused some of the anger. โ€œExplain.โ€

โ€œShe cut him. Got him good in the side based on the amount of blood he left behind. The only reason she remains safely in the castle is because she

fought back. If she hadnโ€™t, the guards wouldnโ€™t have arrived in time to stop him from taking her.โ€ His gaze briefly met mine. โ€œOr causing her more

harm.โ€

I went completely still. Everything in me. โ€œHe harmed her?โ€

โ€œHe struck her.โ€ Jansen looked away, and I stopped seeing him at that point. โ€œWouldโ€™ve likely done it again if Kieran hadnโ€™t signaled to him.โ€

Darkness descended as a flood of icy rage rose within me. Jericho, that motherfucker, literally had one job: Take out one of her guards and do so without being seen. He was not to interact with the Maiden. He had been warned not to touch her. Not to harm her.

โ€œCover for me.โ€ I pivoted and started walking. โ€œThere is something I must attend to.โ€

Jansen was on my heels, keeping his voice low. โ€œHawkeโ€”โ€ I stopped long enough to meet his stare.

Whatever he saw caused him to draw up short. He gave me a curt nod. โ€œIโ€™ll cover for you.โ€

Saying nothing more, I left the Rise, coming down by one of the gatehouses. A few guards lingered near, but none looked at me as I grabbed one of the cloaks left hanging. Donning it, I didnโ€™t care who or how many had worn it last. I lifted the hood and quickly blended into the darkness of

those who lived in the shadows of the Rise.

Knowing exactly where Jericho would be, I wasted no time crossing the smoke-and-sewage-riddled streets of the Lower Ward, my rage increasing with each step as I neared the Three Jackals, a gambling den known for its blood sports and violent clientele.

I was about to become the most violent patron theyโ€™d ever seen.

A shadow peeled away from the walls, drifting quietly past an

unconscious man on the sidewalk. Kieran approached me in the dim light of the lanterns that framed the windowless entry, dressed in the dull brown

trousers and worn jacket of a commoner, a cap pulled low to hide his features. โ€œI know you want to do something irresponsible and reckless, but you canโ€™t kill him,โ€ he said. There was no greeting. No need to ask questions. He knew why I was here.

โ€œIโ€™m not going to kill him,โ€ I replied. โ€œIโ€™m only going to murder him.โ€ Kieran sidestepped, blocking me. โ€œThatโ€™s the same thing.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not. Killing someone implies it couldโ€™ve been an accident.

What Iโ€™m about to do will be completely intentional.โ€

โ€œI get your anger. I doโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think you do.โ€ I started to brush past him, but Kieran planted a hand on my shoulder, stopping me. I looked down at his hand and then lifted my gaze to his. โ€œIย reallyย donโ€™t think you do.โ€

โ€œHe didnโ€™t listen, and he stepped way out of line. Iโ€™m pissed, too.โ€ His pale blue eyes brightened beneath the brim of his cap. โ€œBut you cannot murder, kill, or unalive him.โ€

A rumble of warning rose from my chest. โ€œI can do whatever I please,โ€ I growled, stepping into Kieran and forcing his arm to bend. โ€œI am his fucking Prince, and he disobeyed me.โ€

โ€œOh, soย nowย you claim ownership of that title?โ€ Kieran countered, his voice as low as mine. โ€œBear all the responsibilities of such? Good. About damn time. Your parents and Atlantia will rejoice. Alastir will likely come in his pants from happiness, and blah, blah, what-the-fuck-ever, but you arenโ€™t just going to go in there as his Prince. You will be going in there as the Prince of Atlantiaโ€”the Prince who governs us all.โ€

I knocked his arm aside. โ€œI canโ€™t believe youโ€™re out here defending him.โ€

โ€œYou know damn well I canโ€™t stand the jackass, but itโ€™s not about me.

Itโ€™s not about you,โ€ he shot back.

โ€œThen educate me on what this is about because, right now, the world is my fucking playground.โ€

โ€œHe was acting upon your ordersโ€”and, yes, he wasnโ€™t supposed to attempt to take her.โ€ Having no concern for his well-being, he clasped my shoulder again. โ€œBut do you think anyone will see the harm in him attempting to speed this shit up? Even if itย wasย a foolish attempt?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not the only reason,โ€ I spat. โ€œYou were there.โ€

โ€œI was.โ€ His grip on my shoulder firmed. โ€œI saw what he did. I saw what she did. She cut him, deeply enough that if he were mortal, he would be

dead.โ€

My head tilted. โ€œDo you think I give a fuck about him being cut? I told him she was to remain unharmed.โ€

โ€œI know, and I knocked him on his ass for it already. But how do you think any of those with him, those who traveled into Solis with you and are risking their lives for you, will handle seeing him die at their Princeโ€™s

hands?โ€

โ€œThey are risking their lives for my brother,โ€ I seethed.

โ€œIs there a difference?โ€ There was in my mind.

Kieran leaned in until the brim of his cap brushed the hood of my cloak. โ€œNo one in there will care that he struck the Maiden. Right or wrong, they donโ€™t see her as a person. When they look at her, all they see is a symbol of the Ascended, of those who have killed many of their kin and drove their

people to near extinction. That doesnโ€™t mean they all agree with what he did, but you need to think about what it will do if you walk in there and kill himโ€”a wolven who descends from one of the eldest families.โ€

I inhaled sharply, some of what he was saying breaking through the fog of anger.

โ€œI know whatโ€™s really got you so fired up. Itโ€™s not just because he tried to grab her,โ€ Kieran repeated, squeezing my shoulder. โ€œI know.โ€

My next breath was too shallow. The idea of harming a woman disgusted me, but sometimes it was an unfortunate necessity, even with the Ascended. Kieran knew most of what the Blood Crown had forced me to do when they held me. Heโ€™d coaxed a lot of it out of me during my benders. He knew about the lives Iโ€™d been forced to take, and the ones Iโ€™d had to end slowly and painfully. My stomach churned.

I took a step back, exhaling roughly. Kieran was right. None of the others would expect me to be angry enough to slaughter the idiot wolven just for attempting to take the Maiden. And he was also right about how they saw her.

Just as I did.

A symbol of the Ascended, a reminder of the bloodshed and loss weโ€™d all dealt with and were still experiencing. My time with her at the Red Pearl didnโ€™t change that. Neither did the Maidenโ€™s desire to experience pleasure. Not a damn thing had changed.

โ€œYou level?โ€ Kieran asked. I nodded. โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t do anything you should thank me for,โ€ he said.

โ€œNot true.โ€ I met his stare. โ€œYou did everything. Like always.โ€
