Chapter no 44

A Light in the Flame (Flesh and Fire, #2)

Tapestries blocked out any sources of light as the door closed behind me. My gaze swept over the portraits of those with emerald eyes and the heavily stacked shelves lining the wall, stopping on the source of the voice.

A man stood near the bookshelves, his dark hair brushing the shoulders of a brilliant blue tunic. His back was to us, arms cradling what appeared to be a stack of books.

Ash moved to the center of the library by a golden cushioned settee and chairs. โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œIt is,โ€ the god replied, bending to slide a book between two others. โ€œI was beginning to grow a little impatient. Thankfully, Cauldra Manor is a lovely place. As is the Balfour family. Their name will be honored long after the great kingdoms fall.โ€

I sent Ash a questioning raise of brows as I joined him. โ€œItโ€™s a name of honor now.โ€

โ€œBut it will become an old, honored one, long after my bones turn to ash.โ€ Delfai looked over his shoulder. Onyx eyes deeply set in amber skin met mine. He barely looked older than me, but those eyesโ€ฆthey were as black and endless as Hollandโ€™s. โ€œIt is a name, Fates willing, you may one day know.โ€

A shiver coursed down my spine.

โ€œBut the Balfour name is an interesting one,โ€ he went on before Ash or I could respond. โ€œAs are their ancestors. One comes to mind. An oracle. The last one to be born.โ€ A faint smile appeared as he tilted his head to the side. โ€œShe was very kind, and I enjoyed conversing with her. The Princess here reminds me of her. Perhaps that is why I am comfortable here.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re not here to discuss the Balfour family,โ€ Ash interrupted.

โ€œI know.โ€ Delfai turned to us. โ€œYouโ€™ve come seeking knowledge of how to repeat what never shouldโ€™ve happened.โ€

โ€œThat would be it,โ€ Ash said, crossing his arms. โ€œWe want to know how the embers were transferred.โ€

โ€œYou want to know more than that,โ€ Delfai corrected. โ€œThe Arae, even with all they can see, worried about what they couldnโ€™t predict. The unseen. Unknown. The possibilities. And nothing worried them more than an imbalance of Primal power. The Fates wanted something in case there ever came a time when a new Primal must rise, but there was no Primal of Life to Ascend them.โ€ Delfaiโ€™s dark head bowed as he walked along the shelves. โ€œObviously, one of them foresaw some of what was to come, but none of them had enough foresight to see that what they created could be used to bring about what they sought to prevent: a false King.โ€ He chuckled, bending down. โ€œFate even fucks withย theย Fates.โ€

I exchanged a look with Ash. โ€œWhat was it they created?โ€

โ€œA conduit powerful enough to briefly store and transfer embers both volatile and unpredictable in their raw, unsheltered state.โ€ Delfai ran his fingers over the booksโ€™ spines, lips moving in a silent murmur until he found whatever he was looking for. He shoved several tomes aside and slid in the one he held. โ€œThey had to go deep within the Undying Hills to find such a thing.โ€

โ€œThe Undying Hills are in the mortal realm,โ€ I said as I ran my thumb along the inside of my palm and over the imprint. โ€œA stretch of mountains along the northern region of the kingdom of Terra.โ€

โ€œBut they were once nameless, just another stretch of untouched land yet untainted by man or god.โ€ Delfai faced us. โ€œUntil the Arae conjured forth the heart of the mountainsโ€”a precious stone created by the flames of dragons that used to inhabit this realm eons ago before Primals could shed joyous tears. It was the first of its kind, known for not only its indestructible strength, but also its irregular, jagged beauty and silver sheen. They called the diamond the Star.โ€

Ash frowned as my brows shot up. โ€œIโ€™ve heard of no such thing.โ€

The god smirked. โ€œYou werenโ€™t meant to. No one but the Arae was supposed to know of its existence.โ€

โ€œWhy did removing the diamond cause the mountains to be called the Undying Hills?โ€ I cut in.

โ€œAre there not more important questions to ask?โ€ the god queried.

I stared at him. โ€œIโ€™m fully aware of the fact that there are, but Iโ€™m curious.โ€

Delfai snorted. โ€œHave you seen the Undying Hills?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Come to think of it, I hadnโ€™t even seen paintings of the land.

A wry grin tugged at Ashโ€™s lips. โ€œThey got their name because only the most tolerant of plants and creatures can survive the mountains, which have long, barren stretches of land, providing little food or shelter. No mortal would survive long in those conditions.โ€

I crossed my arms. โ€œBut why did removing the diamond have that kind of effect?โ€

โ€œThe Arae had to erupt half the mountain to find the diamond,โ€ Delfai explained. โ€œThe heated rock and gas irrevocably changed the landscape.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ I murmured. โ€œI suppose that would do it.โ€

โ€œSo, the Arae got their conduit,โ€ Ash said, getting us back on track. โ€œHow is it used?โ€

โ€œFor many purposes. But for your intent?โ€ Delfai sat on the settee with a sigh that matched a god of his age, where his appearance did not. โ€œItโ€™s a rather simple process. Either a Primal or an Arae would be needed to use it

โ€”only they have the kind of essence needed to force such a transfer. Then contact. Between either the Primal the embers are currently in and the god they are to be transferred toโ€ฆor in the case of how it was used, held by both Primals. The Star would transfer the embers.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s all?โ€ Ashโ€™s tone rang with disbelief.

โ€œAs I said, it is a rather simple process.โ€ Delfai smiled up at us. โ€œThe Arae are known for their often-simplistic nature, are they not?โ€

I wasnโ€™t so sure about that, but I was glad this didnโ€™t involve some sort of complicated spell.

โ€œWait. If the diamond was not supposed to be known, then why in the hell did a Fate tell Kolis about the Star?โ€

I sucked in a sharp breath, realizing that Holland mustโ€™ve known this but lied. Or had he? Could sharing this information be seen as crossing a line? Then again, what this Arae had done had definitely crossed all the lines. โ€œArenโ€™t the Arae supposed to beโ€ฆI donโ€™t know, neutral and not interfere in fate? Giving Kolis the Star sure sounds like interference to me.โ€

His dark eyes flicked to mine. โ€œThe Arae often walk a fine line of guidance and interference, donโ€™t they?โ€

I stiffened, and Delfaiโ€™s smile grew until a shiver of unease drifted down my spine. Then I remembered what Ash had told me about how the Primals fell. โ€œWhen the Primals began to feel emotion, so did the Arae.โ€

Ash nodded. โ€œI imagine that most remained neutral, but the capability to feel emotion changed everything.โ€

โ€œAndย everyone,โ€ Delfai added, turning that eerie smile on Ash. โ€œI have no knowledge of which one gave Kolis what he wanted, nor the true reason behind doing so. It couldโ€™ve been a nefarious act, or they simply fell prey to what they feared would happen to Primals if they could love. It is possible their emotions were exploited, forcing them into such an act to protect someone they loved.โ€

โ€œLove,โ€ I murmured, swallowed. โ€œMaybe it is a weakness.โ€

โ€œI believe it to be the one thing more unpredictable than even a Primal ember. Therefore, stronger,โ€ Delfai countered, drawing my gaze to him. โ€œLove makesย anythingย possible. Makesย anyoneย capable of the unexpected.โ€

I shifted my weight from one foot to the other, uncomfortable as the god continued staring at me. โ€œWhere is this diamond now?โ€

His dark eyes glimmered. โ€œKolis has it,โ€ he said, and my stomach sank. โ€œHe knows what itโ€™s capable of. He wouldnโ€™t want anyone else to be able to access it.โ€

โ€œGreat,โ€ Ash snarled with a flash of fangs.

โ€œBut you want to know how to remove the embers fromย her,โ€ Delfai said. โ€œTo do so, you wouldnโ€™t need the Star.โ€

My head snapped up. โ€œCan we get a little more detail on that?โ€ โ€œAt this time, you are simply the mortal vessel for the embersโ€”โ€

โ€œShe is not simply a vessel,โ€ Ash growled as eather charged the air. โ€œNot now. Not before this moment, and not going forward.โ€

The catch in my breath and my heart left me a little dizzy as I stared at Ash. I wanted to hug him. Kiss him.

โ€œMy apologies.โ€ The god bowed his head. โ€œWhat I meant to say is that she is the current holder of the embers, a living being allowing the embers to grow in power. Therefore, transferring them from her will not be the same as it would be to remove the embers from a Primal born and fully Ascended.โ€ His eerie, unflinching gaze settled on me. โ€œThey would just need to be taken from you. And doing so will mean only a rather minor impact on the realms.โ€

Iโ€ฆI felt relief. Sharp and sweet. But there was also dread blossoming in my chest.

Delfaiโ€™s gaze slid to Ash. โ€œYou will become what you were once meant to be after your father entered Arcadia. The true Primal of Life, and the

King of Gods.โ€

I thought that sounded right and just, but the embersโ€ฆthey hummed erratically. Almost as if they didnโ€™t like what they were hearing. But the embers werenโ€™t some kind of conscious entity. They wereโ€ฆthey were responding to me. To my emotions. To what I was thinking.

To thoughts I might not even acknowledge.

Relief had eased the lines of Ashโ€™s face as he asked, โ€œHow exactly would I take them from her?โ€

โ€œAnother simple process. One that couldโ€™ve occurred at any point during her Culling and before her Ascension.โ€ Delfai was still staring at Ash in the same unsettling manner that he had looked upon me. โ€œYou must feed from her.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s it?โ€ Frowning, I glanced at Ash. โ€œBut he has fed from me.โ€

The odd little smile faded from Delfaiโ€™s lips. โ€œHe must feed until the last drop of blood is taken. Until there is nothing but the embers left. Then, they will transfer to him. He will Ascend. But youโ€ฆโ€ He sighed. โ€œYou will not survive. You will die.โ€
