Chapter no 15

A Light in the Flame (Flesh and Fire, #2)

The very air in the room seemed to stop. Kolis couldโ€ฆhe could do that? โ€œHas he now?โ€ Nyktosโ€™s voice was softโ€”too soft.

โ€œHe has,โ€ Attes confirmed. โ€œSince there hasnโ€™t been a coronation in many years, he wants it to be moreโ€ฆtraditional.โ€

โ€œWhat does that mean?โ€ I asked, my mouth dry.

Attes inclined his chin. โ€œIt means that Nyktos must gain Kolisโ€™s permission to crown a Consort.โ€ His gaze flicked to Nyktos.

My lips parted. โ€œSon of a bitch.โ€

The wisps of eather swirled in Attesโ€™s eyes as his grin returned. He dipped his head, dropping his voice. โ€œDid you just call the King of Gods a son of a bitch?โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆโ€

Attes laughed even as Nyktosโ€™s body went icy against mine.

โ€œAnd when does he expect me to do this when the coronation is to be heldย tomorrow?โ€ Nyktos demanded.

Attesโ€™s grin faded. โ€œThere will be no coronation tomorrow. Instead, Kolis will summon youโ€”both of you.โ€

It felt like the office disappeared around us. My heart started pounding.

I attempted to rise, but Nyktosโ€™s arm remained firm around me. โ€œWhen?โ€ Nyktos bit out.

โ€œWhen he is ready.โ€ Attes smiled, but there was no warmth to the curve of his lips. No dimple. โ€œThat was all he said.โ€

โ€œSo, it could be tomorrow or a week or month from now,โ€ Nyktos surmised.

โ€œBasically.โ€ Attes sat forward, his shoulders tensing. โ€œYou know, I think he wouldโ€™ve done this even if a god hadnโ€™t Ascended here. After all, you are his favorite.โ€

His favorite? I had a feeling Attes meant the exact opposite by saying that.

โ€œYeah.โ€ Nyktos leaned back. โ€œI think itโ€™s time for you to leave.โ€

โ€œAs do I.โ€ The Primal of Accord and War rose. He looked at me. โ€œIt was a pleasure to meet you.โ€ Primal eyes lifted to mine. โ€œIf you find youโ€™d rather spend your time in a warmer bed and climateโ€ฆโ€

I stared up at him, somewhat dumbfounded. โ€œThank you for the offer, but not interested.โ€

โ€œToo bad.โ€ A dimple appeared in his right cheek. โ€œBut if you ever change your mind, all you have to do is call for me. I will answer.โ€

โ€œLeave.โ€ The promise of violence hummed in that one word. โ€œBefore you have to be carried out of here.โ€

Attes bowed in our direction, then left. The doors closed behind him. Neither Nyktos nor I moved or spoke for several seconds, but the temperature in the room had dropped even further. The arm around my waist and the hand against my thigh hardened. Shadows had bled to the surface of his flesh, and the breath I exhaled formed a misty cloud once more. I thought I saw tiny bursts of silver light throughout the space.

Shivering as the frigid air seeped through the gown, I touched his arm. Like I had the night of the draken attack. โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆitโ€™s cold,โ€ I whispered, my lips beginning to tingle.

Nyktosโ€™s hand slid out from between my thighs, but the arm around me tightened. โ€œArgue with me.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I whispered.

โ€œArgue with me,โ€ he repeated, his voice full of smoke and ice. โ€œDistract me. Something to stop me from going after Attes and taking my anger out on him. That will not end well for the Shadowlands or Vathi, and thatโ€™s the last thing we need.โ€

I twisted toward him. His eyes were nearly pure silver orbs. His jaw was as hard as the shadowstone walls. Churning darkness had blossomed across his cheeks. Eather lit the veins beneath his eyes, and the hardness in the stare fixed on the doors beyond me told me that he wasnโ€™t exaggerating in the least. So, I did the first thing that came to mind.

Clasping his now-icy cheeks in my palms, I did what heโ€™d asked of me when he held me in the sweetly scented tunnels of the Luxe.

I kissed him.

His lipsโ€”cooler than beforeโ€”were still that strangely enticing juxtaposition of soft and firm as his entire body jerked. He didnโ€™t pull away,

but he went completely rigid against me. He was as still as heโ€™d been in the vine tunnel, and I did once more what Iโ€™d done then.

Catching his plump lower lip between my teeth, I bit him.

Not hard enough to draw his blood or hurt him, but, like before, he was no longer still.

I kissed him, but heย devoured. His head tilted, and he parted my lips with a fierce stroke of his tongue. The sharp scrape of his fangs against my lips sent a tight shudder through me as his hand fisted the hair at the nape of my neck. He held me there, his kiss hard, demanding, and I loved his nearly immediate, raw response as I flicked my tongue over his. A rumble came from deep within his throat, his chest. He tasted as decadent as his blood, smoky and sweet, and I quickly lost myself in the kiss. In him.

My fingers slid back, sinking into the soft strands of his hair as I pressed against his chest, wanting to be closer. Needing it. Because he kissed me just like he had the first time. As if he wouldnโ€™t let a single inch of my mouth go unexplored. As if heโ€™d been waiting his entire life to do this. The thought no longer felt silly or whimsical. It felt like sinking under the surface of my lake. It felt like a wild sort of peace. It feltย right.

And that scared me.

I broke the kiss but couldnโ€™t retreat far. His hand was still on the back of my head, buried in my hair, and I was close enough to feel his cool breath coming fast and shallow against my tingling lips.

Only then did I realize that the temperature of the room had risen. โ€œI hope that worked,โ€ I whispered, swallowing.

His chest rose with a deep breath against mine as his hand eased from my hair. โ€œIโ€™m level.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ I started to put some distance between us, but his arm around my waist remained as tight as before. โ€œIโ€™m still in your lap.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not exactly comfortable,โ€ I lied. Iโ€™d never felt more comfortable, which made me unsteady. Vulnerable.

โ€œNeither are you.โ€

My brows shot up. โ€œThat wasโ€”โ€

โ€œMy dick was hard the whole time you were sitting in my lap,โ€ he said. โ€œThe kissing didnโ€™t help.โ€

โ€œโ€”rude,โ€ I finished, blinking.

The shadows under his skin had slowed and were fading. โ€œAnd here I thought getting my dick hard was what you were aiming for before Attes arrived.โ€

My mouth dropped open. โ€œNot anymore.โ€

Some of the intense brightness eased from his stare. โ€œLiar,โ€ he whispered in the scant inches between our mouths.

I was such a liar.

His eyes met mine. โ€œI had to behave that way.โ€

I knew immediately that he was speaking about how heโ€™d acted in front of Attes. There were far more important things to discuss, but I said, โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œAttes is driven by three needsโ€”peace, war, and fucking.โ€ โ€œIn that particular order?โ€

A trace of a smile appeared. โ€œIn any order. If he so much as had anย ideaย there was little attraction between us, he wouldโ€™ve been more interested in you than he already was.โ€

โ€œMore interested? I donโ€™t see why youโ€™d think he was interested at all.โ€ โ€œYou threatened to make him eat his eyes.โ€

โ€œExactly. If that gained his interest, it would be a little bizarre.โ€

โ€œYou stabbed me in the chest.โ€ Nyktos inclined his head. โ€œAnd threatened to claw out my eyes. That didnโ€™t deter my interest at the time. What does that say about me?โ€

โ€œGood question,โ€ I muttered, not missing the at-the-time part of that statement. โ€œBut you started the whole removing the eyes thing.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want Attes thinking that either of us would welcome him acting upon his interests.โ€

My eyes narrowed on him. โ€œI donโ€™t think you have to worry about me welcoming that.โ€

โ€œReally? Did you not suggest mere minutes before his arrival that you were willing to seek out others to satisfy your needs?โ€

I gaped at him. โ€œThat is not what I said!โ€

โ€œActually, Iโ€™m pretty sure thatโ€™s exactly what you said.โ€

โ€œIt was notโ€”โ€ I cut myself off. โ€œOkay. Now, Iโ€™m annoyed. I hope youโ€™re in control of your anger issues because if you donโ€™t let me go, Iโ€™m likely to hit you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to have to risk that,โ€ he replied. โ€œBecause we need to talk about the shit Kolis just pulled, and thereโ€™s a good chance I wonโ€™t remain

level.โ€

โ€œWhat does that have to do with me staying in your lap?โ€ โ€œBecause if he loses his cool, he could hurt you.โ€

My head whipped toward the now-open doors. Nektas stood there, and he wasnโ€™t alone. Ector was beside him. I didnโ€™t even want to think about how long theyโ€™d been standing there.

โ€œAnd with you so close to him,โ€ Nektas continued, โ€œhe wonโ€™t risk it.โ€

I opened my mouth, but I really didnโ€™t know how to respond to that. At all. So, I said nothing. No one said anything.

โ€œWe just ran into Attes,โ€ Ector said, breaking the awkward silence. โ€œGuessing what he said is true. Kolis is demanding you ask for his permission?โ€

โ€œIt is,โ€ Nyktos confirmed, his forearm tensing under my fingers.

Remembering his reaction in the war room, I pulled my hand back. โ€œFuck,โ€ Ector uttered.

I seconded that emotion as I glanced over my shoulder at Nyktos. โ€œDid you know he could do that?โ€

โ€œGaining the King of Godsโ€™ permission was a tradition back when my father ruled.โ€ Nyktos leaned back in the chair, putting a little more space between us. โ€œPrimals and gods sought his approval before a coronation, hoping he would give hisย blessing. But Kolis hasnโ€™t done it once. Nor has he ever shown any interest in such a thing.โ€ The muscle along Nyktosโ€™s jaw flexed. โ€œBut I shouldโ€™ve expected thisโ€”that heโ€™d pull this shit.โ€

After all, you are his favorite.

โ€œHeโ€™ll use this as a chance to find out how the embers of life were felt here,โ€ Nektas said. โ€œI bet heโ€™ll offer that in return for his permission.โ€

Ectorโ€™s amber gaze darted from me to Nyktos. โ€œYou canโ€™t let him know the truth.โ€

โ€œNo shit,โ€ Nyktos replied.

โ€œBut what will you tell him if thatโ€™s the case?โ€ As soon as I finished asking the question, I understood. โ€œAttes said that neither he nor the other Primals had forgotten who your father was or who you were meant to be. Kolis could think it was you.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s far better than him thinking itโ€™s you,โ€ he countered. I gaped at him. โ€œNo, itโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œKolis would know itโ€™s not Ash,โ€ Nektas interrupted. โ€œHeโ€™s already tested Ash enough to know that he has no embers of life in him.โ€

โ€œTestedโ€ฆ?โ€ I trailed off, thinking of the ink swirling over Nyktosโ€™s skin. I knew as Ector looked away, rubbing his hand through his hair. I knew without even asking. Some of those drops represented those that Kolis had killed to see if Nyktos could bring them back to life.

Gods.

Nyktos had gone still behind me, and I hoped I wasnโ€™t projecting and that he wasnโ€™t reading me. I didnโ€™t think heโ€™d appreciate the sorrow I felt for him.

Nyktos finally spoke. โ€œI would lie. I would tell him that I felt it, searched for the source, but havenโ€™t found it.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™d believe that?โ€ I asked, looking back at him.

โ€œIโ€™ve had to convince Kolis of many things,โ€ he told me. โ€œI will convince him of this when he issues his summonsโ€”whenever heโ€™s damn good and ready. Whichโ€”โ€

โ€œPresents many issues,โ€ Nektas finished. That was an understatement.

โ€œBelieve it or not, Kolisโ€™s interference isnโ€™t the only issue weโ€™re now facing,โ€ Nyktos said. โ€œNot after Attes met Sera.โ€

I twisted back to him with a frown. โ€œI doubt Attes thinks Iโ€™m anything more than a mouthy pair of breasts.โ€

Ector snickered.

Nyktosโ€™s eyes flared with eather. โ€œHe wasย provokingย you.โ€ My scowl deepened. โ€œWhen he called me an accessory?โ€

โ€œNot then. Later. I could sense him using eather. He was feeding into your emotions, amplifying either calmness or violence.โ€

There was a reason Primals didnโ€™t often enter the mortal realm. Their presence could change the moods and minds of mortals and impact the environment around them. The Primal Maia could evoke love and fertility. Embris could increase oneโ€™s wisdom or guide them into making poor choices. Phanos could stir the oceans into a frenzy. Attesโ€™s brother, Kyn, could engender peace or vengeance.

โ€œYou really think he was trying to do that?โ€ I asked, thinking of when the eather in Attesโ€™s eyes had grown brighter. โ€œTo me?โ€

โ€œWithout a doubt,โ€ Nyktos confirmed.

โ€œBut I didnโ€™t feel calmer or more violentโ€ฆthan normal,โ€ I said, and he huffed out a laugh. โ€œI didnโ€™t feel anything.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Nyktos said.

โ€œOh, shit,โ€ Ector murmured. โ€œAttes wouldโ€™ve realized that his presence had no impact on you.โ€

A sharp slice of unease lanced my chest. โ€œBut Nyktos told him I was a godlingโ€”โ€

โ€œNeither godlings nor gods are immune to a Primalโ€™s abilities,โ€ Ector said. โ€œWe donโ€™t react to their presence as quickly or recklessly as a mortal might, but it would affect us if a Primal wanted it to. Thatโ€™s why the gods in Kynโ€™s Court are a bunch of bastards, and the ones in Maiaโ€™s are a horny lot.โ€

My lips pursed.

โ€œBesides the Arae and the draken,โ€ Ector continued, โ€œonly one other would be immune.โ€

Nyktosโ€™s gaze caught mine. โ€œOnly a Primal is immune to another Primalโ€™s presence.โ€

โ€œGood gods, that could meanโ€ฆโ€ I squeezed my eyes closed. It could mean that Attes might suspect the truth. That it wasย meย who carried the embers of life. The Consort-to-be, who was about to be summoned by Kolis. My breath scraped against my throat.

โ€œGive us a minute,โ€ Nyktos said, and when I opened my eyes, both Ector and Nektas were gone, the doors closed once more. More than a few seconds passed in silence before Nyktos spoke again. โ€œItโ€™ll be okay.โ€

A strangled laugh left me. โ€œAttes might now realize it is I who carries the embers of life. And Kolis is going to summon both of us. How in the world is that okay?โ€

โ€œIt could be worse.โ€ โ€œHow?โ€

โ€œKolis couldโ€™ve outright denied the coronation. Forbidden that I take a Consort.โ€

โ€œHe can do that?โ€

Nyktos nodded. โ€œI could still take you as my Consort, but you would not be recognized as such by the other Courts.โ€

Meaning whatever protection the position offered would have no longer existed. Neither the gods nor the draken could defend me against a Primal. If one of the other Primals or Kolis himself seized me, Nyktos would have no support if he retaliatedโ€”and I knew he would. โ€œWill he do that?โ€

โ€œIf you asked me that yesterday, I wouldโ€™ve said no. Now? Anything is possible.โ€

Anythingโ€ฆ

My heart started beating in a way that made breathing difficult. My thoughts raced. Muscles tensed. โ€œWhat if Iโ€ฆwhat if I look like Sotoria?โ€ I whispered.

โ€œHe will not touch you.โ€ Nyktos cupped my cheek, and my eyes closed at the faint trace of energy moving from his fingertips to my skin. โ€œI will not allow it.โ€

The safety in his promise, the security of it, threatened to wrap around me. It was already beginning to calm my heart, and I didnโ€™t want to fight it. I wanted to rely on the promise. On him.

Nyktosโ€™s forehead touched my temple, and some of the rigidness eased from my muscles. I started to relax into him. โ€œHe will not have a chance to learn if you look like her.โ€

Eyes flying open, I jerked back. โ€œNyktosโ€”โ€ โ€œYou will not go anywhere near him.โ€

My stomach lurched. โ€œYou just told me what happened when one delays in answering Kolisโ€™s summons. I will not be the reason forย moreย death.โ€

โ€œYou have never been the reason.โ€ โ€œBullshit.โ€

โ€œKolis has been the reason. Not you. Not your actions. It has been him. Always him.โ€ Wisps of eather stirred in his eyes. โ€œYou need to understand that, Sera. You are not at fault.โ€

It was hard to accept that when Kolis had been reacting toย myย actions. Unable to stay still, I pulled on his hold. Nyktosโ€™s arm fell away. I rose,

backing away from him. โ€œI will not hide from his summons, Nyktos.โ€

His hand fell to the arm of his chair. โ€œAnd I will not allow you to be in danger.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m already in danger! Iโ€™ve lived my whole life that way.โ€ The crack in my chest threatened to spread and deepen as I stared at the empty bookshelves. โ€œIf my refusal to answer his summons caused something to happenโ€”for people to be hurt or killedโ€”I couldnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€ I shoved the hair back from my face as I turned away from him. โ€œI couldnโ€™t deal with that.โ€

โ€œIs that really why you are determined to answer his summons?โ€ Slowly, I faced him. โ€œWhat other reason could there be?โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t this what you wanted?โ€ His grip on the arm of the chair tightened, bleaching his knuckles. โ€œTo get to Kolis?โ€

I opened my mouth, but it struck me that I should be celebrating this. Not onceโ€”not from the moment Attes had delivered his message until now

โ€”had it even occurred to me that Nyktos wouldnโ€™t be forced into taking me as his Consort tomorrow. I could come face-to-face with Kolis without the risks of escaping. And if I looked like Sotoria, my duty would be even easier to achieve. Not only lives would be saved. Entireย realmsย would be. I should be thrilled.

But I wasnโ€™t.

I felt anything but that. A wild mix of emotion brimmed beneath the surface, causing the crack in my chest to weaken even further. I was scared. Horrified. Angry. Desperate. On the verge of losing controlโ€”

I sucked in deep gulps of air, shutting it all down. Silencing the storm much like I had when I donned the veil.

Nyktos hadnโ€™t taken his eyes off me. His stare was as hard as it had been earlier. โ€œThis way, you wouldnโ€™t have to try to escape, would you?โ€

The breath I took fell short as the back of my neck burned. โ€œFuck you.โ€ A muscle flexed in his jaw. I thought he might have flinched, but I wasnโ€™t sure, and I didnโ€™t care. I turned stiffly, leaving his office before the

crack in my chest exploded again.

Before I lost control.

Nektas was waiting in the hall when I stormed out of Nyktosโ€™s office. I didnโ€™t see Ector as I turned, walking past the draken. I swallowed a curse as Nektas fell into step beside me.

โ€œGreat. Youโ€™re following me,โ€ I muttered. โ€œYouโ€™re very astute,ย meyaah Liessa.โ€

I sighed.

โ€œYou donโ€™t like being referred to as a Queen, do you?โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re very astute,ย meyaahย draken.โ€

Nektasโ€™s laugh was short and rough as I opened the door to the stairwell. โ€œI didnโ€™t know I was your draken.โ€

I started climbing the narrow steps far less grand than the main staircase. โ€œYeah, well, youโ€™re my draken as much as Iโ€™m your Queen.โ€

โ€œYou are our Queen with or without a coronation.โ€

โ€œThat makes little sense, but whatever,โ€ I muttered, reaching for the door on the fourth floor.

Nektas stretched his arm over my head, pulling it open before I could. โ€œYou carry the only true embers of life in you, Sera. Youโ€™reย theย Queen.โ€

I looked over my shoulder at him with a frown.

He eased past me, quiet as he led the way to my bedchamber. I watched as he entered the room and proceeded to go straight to the bathing chamber. He pushed open that door and inspected the space before going to the balcony doors while I stopped by the settee. There, he shoved the drapes aside and looked out.

โ€œDo you want to check under the bed, too?โ€ I suggested.

He turned, arching a dark brow. โ€œWas Ash wrong? In doubting your motivations?โ€

โ€œGods,โ€ I snarled. โ€œIs eavesdropping a talent draken are particularly skilled at, or is it just somethingย youโ€™reย really good at?โ€

Nektas stared blandly at me. I held his gaze.

โ€œYou want to know what I think?โ€ โ€œNo,โ€ I said.

โ€œIโ€™m going to tell you anyway.โ€ โ€œThen why did you ask?โ€

โ€œI was attempting to be polite,โ€ he replied, and I snorted. โ€œHe was wrong.โ€

I said nothing.

โ€œBut he was also right.โ€

โ€œWell, your commentary was helpful, as always,โ€ I said, shaking my head in frustration. โ€œYou know, the thing is, I donโ€™t blame Nyktos for questioning that. Not really. But, honest to gods, seizing this as an opportunity to get to Kolis didnโ€™t even cross my mind.โ€

โ€œThen who are you more angry with? Ash or yourself?โ€ โ€œBoth?โ€

He smiled faintly. โ€œYou canโ€™t be angry at both.โ€

I looked away. โ€œYeah, but being angry doesnโ€™t matter. What Nyktos believes doesnโ€™t matter. What I want doesnโ€™t matter. What does is the fact that Kolis one-upped usโ€”probably without even realizing he did. Now, we

will both be summoned, and how can Nyktos convince Kolis that he has no idea how a god Ascended or that he doesnโ€™t know it was Bele?โ€

โ€œAs Ash said, heโ€™s had to convince Kolis of many falsehoods in the past.โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€ I asked, unable to stop myself.

โ€œThat Ash doesnโ€™t hate him with every fiber of his being and wants to see him chained beneath the ground. Kolis doesnโ€™t know that. He thinks that Ash is only testing his limits when he rebels against him or pushes back on something. Kolis believes that Ash is as loyal to him as any other Primal.โ€

Disbelief rolled through me. โ€œHow can Kolis not know the truth when he killed Nyktosโ€™s parents? How can he even think for one second that Nyktos would be loyal after that?โ€

โ€œBecause Ash has convinced him that he feels nothing regarding his mother. That wasnโ€™t difficult for Kolis to believe since Ash never knew her,โ€ he explained. โ€œAnd heโ€™s convinced Kolis that he hated his fatherโ€”that he considered Eythos weak and selfish. If Ash hadnโ€™t been successful in hiding his true feelings toward him, Kolis wouldโ€™ve done worse than what he did after he took the embers.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m afraid to ask.โ€

โ€œKolis killed every god and godling that served under Eythos, ensuring that none could Ascend to replace the Primal of Life.โ€

โ€œGood gods,โ€ I whispered. โ€œAll of them?โ€

โ€œThose who were not at Court were hunted down across Iliseeum and the mortal realm. Even godlings several generations removed from the Court, those who never went through the Culling, were slaughtered.โ€

I clamped my mouth shut against the rising bile. I didnโ€™t know what to say, but I suddenly thought of the murdered mortals. The siblings and the babe. Could their deaths have been a result of that? Had Nyktos believed wrong? Or was it that heโ€™d felt he couldnโ€™t tell me at the time?

โ€œIf Kolis knew how Ash really felt about him, he wouldโ€™ve killed every god here,โ€ Nektas continued quietly. โ€œEvery mortal and godling. Chained every draken in the Abyss. Kolis wouldโ€™ve leveled the Shadowlands.โ€

I sat on the edge of the bed.

โ€œSo, convincing him of this will be no different.โ€

โ€œHowโ€ฆ?โ€ I clasped the bed column I sat near. โ€œHow can he be that convincing?โ€

Nektasโ€™s crimson eyes met mine. โ€œItโ€™s the same thing that drives you to be so convincing. That it is his duty to do whatever is necessary to protect as many people as he can.โ€

I flinched. โ€œIโ€™m not pretendingโ€”โ€ โ€œIโ€™m not talking about Ash.โ€

He was talking about Kolisโ€”about the duty I knew was mine. One that would allow me to do whatever was necessary. I pressed my lips together. โ€œBut itโ€™s different. Kolis hasnโ€™t made any personal attacks against me. There isnโ€™t history between us like there is with him and Nyktos.โ€

โ€œThere isnโ€™t?โ€ Nektas asked quietly. I stilled. โ€œIโ€™m notย her.โ€

โ€œNo, but she is a part of you, Sera.โ€

Tipping my head back, I stared at the glossy surface of the ceiling. โ€œYeah, well, if I do look like her, and he summons us before Nyktos gets the embers out of me, weโ€™re screwed. Everyone is screwed.โ€

โ€œThen we must make sure those embers are not vulnerable for long.โ€ I lowered my gaze to him.

Nektas watched me. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you call him Ash anymore?โ€ The question caught me off guard. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a lie.โ€

โ€œHow would you know?โ€ I demanded, crossing my arms.

Nektas came forward, his steps surprisingly quiet for someone so large. โ€œAsh is what his father called him.โ€

I hadnโ€™t known that, and I didnโ€™t think I wanted to know that now.

โ€œFor him to introduce himself as such to you meant something,โ€ Nektas added.

โ€œMaybe it did before.โ€ Sighing, I leaned against the column. โ€œBut heโ€™s not Ash to me any longer.โ€

His head tilted, the vertical slits of his pupils expanding until they were almost more commonly shaped. โ€œHe is how you wish him to be,โ€ he said. โ€œAs you are what you wish to be to those of the Shadowlands and beyond. That is up to you. No one else.โ€
