Havelockโs timing was perfect, but Apollo wished he hadnโt mentioned information about Jacks. Evangelineโs reaction to the potential news was immediate. Her expressions were always so easy to read. Earlier heโd seen her unease; then heโd seen her fear, her anger; and now as she bit down on her lower lip, he could see her curiosity. She was the moth and Jacks was still the flame.
โHavelock, show Lord Slaughterwood to my study. Iโll meet him there.โ โMay I join you?โ Evangeline asked. โIโd like to hear what he has to
say.โ
Apollo pretended to consider her request. But it was mostly to make sure she wouldnโt leave too soon and run into Lord Slaughterwood in the hall.
When Apollo had been under the Archerโs curse and everyone had believed him dead, heโd read in a scandal sheet that Evangeline had attended Lord Slaughterwoodโs engagement party. So far she hadnโt reacted to his name, but Apollo couldnโt risk a run-in with the man that might jog any memoriesโor that Slaughterwood might say something to her about Jacks, who Apollo suspected sheโd attended the party with.
โIโm so sorry, darling, but I donโt think that would be a good idea. Remember what I said about people believing youโre working with Jacks? If any of them were to find out you were in a meeting where his
whereabouts were revealed, they would blame you if he were to elude us again.โ
Evangeline pinched her lips shut. She would argue with him, he had no doubt. But whatever she said next didnโt matter. This was all to protect her.
He stroked her cheek. โI hope you understand.โ
โI do understand, and I hope you understand that as long as you treat me like an untrustworthy captive, I will act like one instead of like your wife.โ
She pulled away from Apollo and without another word turned her back and walked out of the room, pink hair swishing behind her.
He had an urge to chase her, a remnant of the Archerโs curse that made him want to stop her before she reached the door and forbid her from leaving. He didnโt. Apollo knew it was better that she left right now, and there was only so far she could go.
Evangeline might have decided that she didnโt want to act like his wife, but it didnโt change the fact that sheย was.ย She was his. And one way or the other, eventually she would want him as much as he wanted her.
A few minutes later, Apollo met Lord Slaughterwood in his private study.
Robin Slaughterwood had always had the sort of good-humored nature that drew people to him like a magnet. But he wasnโt smiling today. His eyes had dark circles, his mouth was drawn, and his face was sallow. He looked as if heโd aged five years since Apollo had last seen him.
โYou look excellent, my friend. Being engaged suits you well.โ
โYouโre as smooth a liar as ever,โ Slaughterwood grumbled. โI look like hell, and the engagement is over. But Iโm not here to talk about that.โ
โYou have a lead on Jacks?โ Apollo asked.
โNo,โ Slaughterwood said quietly, stepping closer to the fire. โI just didnโt think youโd want me mentioning Vengeance Slaughterwoodโs cuff.โ
โDid you find it, then?โ Apollo tried not to give too much of his excitement away. The cuff was an old story, a fairytale, the kind heโd never put too much faith in. But heโd learned recently that some of the old stories held far more truthโand more powerโthan heโd previously believed.
โNo,โ Slaughterwood said bluntly. โIf it exists, my family doesnโt have it. But I did find something else that I thought might be of interest to you.โ He handed Apollo a heavy scroll bound up with a thin cord of leather. โBe very careful with this. And whatever you do, donโt throw away the ashes.โ
