Chapter no 24

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

The next morning, I awoke to an empty bed and someone rapping on my door.

โ€œIโ€™m coming in,โ€ Alisa called. She tried to open the door, but Oren stopped her from the hallway.

โ€œI could be naked in here,โ€ I grumbled loudly, hastily throwing on designer sweatpants before telling Oren to let her in.

โ€œAnd you could count on my discretion if you were,โ€ Alisa replied briskly. โ€œAttorney-client privilege.โ€

โ€œWas that an actual joke?โ€ I asked. In response, Alisa placed a leather satchel on my dresser. โ€œIf thatโ€™s more paperwork for me to look over,โ€ I told her, โ€œI donโ€™t want it.โ€

I had enough on my plate right now without thinking about the trust paperworkโ€”or the journal Grayson had given me, its pages still blank.

โ€œThatโ€™s not paperwork.โ€ Alisa didnโ€™t clarify what the bagย was. Instead, she fixed me with what I had termed the Alisa Look. โ€œYou should have called me. The moment someone showed up claiming to be Toby Hawthorneโ€™s daughter, you should have called.โ€

I glanced at Oren, wondering if heโ€™d changed his mind and told her about Eve. โ€œWhy?โ€ I asked Alisa. โ€œThe will is through probate. Eve isnโ€™t a legal threat.โ€

โ€œThis isnโ€™t just about the will. That threatening note you receivedโ€”โ€

Notes, plural.ย I glanced at Oren, and he gave a slight shake of his headโ€”he wasnโ€™t the one who had tipped her off to any of this.

Alisa rolled her eyes at the two of us. โ€œThis is the part where you tell meโ€”erroneouslyโ€”that you have everything under control.โ€

โ€œI advised against calling you,โ€ Oren told her point- blank. โ€œThis was a security issue, not a legal one.โ€

โ€œReally, Oren?โ€ For a split second, Alisa looked hurt, then she converted that to extreme professional annoyance. โ€œLetโ€™s address the elephant in the room, shall we?โ€ she said. โ€œYes, I took a chance when Avery was in that coma, but if I hadnโ€™t moved her back to Hawthorne House when I did, she wouldnโ€™tย haveย a security team. The terms of the will were ironclad. Do you understand that, Oren? If I hadnโ€™t done what I did, Avery wouldnโ€™t be entitled to live at Hawthorne House with all its fancy security. You wouldnโ€™t be able to pay your men.โ€ Alisa stared at him, hard. โ€œShe would be out there withย nothing, so, yes, I took a calculated risk, and thank God I did.โ€ She turned to me. โ€œSince I am theย onlyย one in this room who can claim to make the good, smart decision under fireโ€”when things start going up in flames,ย you damn well pick up the phone.โ€

I winced.

โ€œAs it was,โ€ Alisa muttered, โ€œI had to hear about this from Nash.โ€

That startled a response out of me. โ€œNash called you?โ€

โ€œHe canโ€™t even stand to be in the same room with me,โ€ Alisa said softly, โ€œbut he called. Becauseย heย knows I am good at my job.โ€ She walked toward me, her heels clicking against the wood floor. โ€œI canโ€™t help you if you wonโ€™t let me, Avery, not with this and not with everything youโ€™re about to have on your plate.โ€

The money. She was talking about my inheritanceโ€”and the trust.

โ€œWhat happened, Alisa?โ€ Oren crossed his arms over his chest.

โ€œWhat makes you think something happened?โ€ Alisa asked coolly.

โ€œInstinct,โ€ my head of security replied. โ€œAnd the fact that someone has been trying to chip away at Averyโ€™s security team.โ€

I could practically see Alisa filing that piece of information away. โ€œIโ€™ve become aware of a smear campaign,โ€ she said, giving Oren tit for tat. โ€œGossip websites, mostly. Nothing you need to concern yourself with, Avery, but one of my connections in the press has informed me that the going rate for pictures of you with any of the Hawthornes has inexplicably tripled. Meanwhile, at least three companies that Tobias Hawthorne owned a significant stake in are experiencingโ€ฆ turbulence.โ€

Orenโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œWhat kind of turbulence?โ€

โ€œCEO turnover, sudden scandal, FDA investigationsโ€ฆโ€

Avenge. Revenge. Vengeance. Avenger. I always win in the end.

โ€œOn the business end of things, what are we looking for?โ€ Oren asked Alisa.

โ€œWealth. Power. Connections.โ€ Alisa set her jaw. โ€œIโ€™m on it.โ€

She was on it. Oren was on it. But we werenโ€™t any closer to an answer or to getting Toby back, and there was nothing I could do about it.ย An incomplete riddle. A storyโ€” and weโ€™re at the mercy of the storyteller.

โ€œIโ€™ll let you know as soon as I find something,โ€ Alisa said. โ€œIn the meantime, we need to keep Eve happy, away from the press, and under surveillance until the firm can assess the best course of action. I suspect a modest settlement, in exchange for an NDA, may be in order.โ€ In full-on lawyer mode, Alisa didnโ€™t even pause before moving on to the next item on her agenda. โ€œIf, at any point, a ransom needs to be arranged, the firm can handle that as well.โ€

Was that where this was headed? The end of this story, once the riddle was complete? Was Tobyโ€™s captor just waiting until he had me where he wanted me to make demands?

โ€œIโ€™ll have my team keep you in the loop,โ€ Oren told Alisa briskly.

My lawyer nodded like she expected nothing less, but I got the sense that Oren letting her back in mattered to her. โ€œI suppose the only business that remains isย that.โ€ Alisa nodded toward the leather satchel sheโ€™d placed on my dresser. โ€œWhen I updated the partners on the current situation, I was given this bag and its contents to pass along to you, Avery.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€ I asked, walking toward my dresser.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Alisa sounded perturbed. โ€œMr. Hawthorneโ€™s instructions were that it was to remain secure and unopened, unless certain conditions were met, in which case it was to be delivered promptly to you.โ€

I stared at the bag. Tobias Hawthorne had left me his fortune, but the only message Iโ€™d ever received from him was a grand total of two words:ย Iโ€™m sorry. I reached out to touch the leather bag. โ€œWhat conditions?โ€

Alisa cleared her throat. โ€œWe were to deliver this to you in the event that you ever met Evelyn Shane.โ€

I remembered vaguely thatย Eveย was short forย Evelynโ€” but then another realization took over.ย The old man knew about Eve.ย That revelation hit me like splinters to my lungs. Iโ€™d assumed that the dead billionaire hadnโ€™t known about Tobyโ€™sย actualย daughter. At some point, Iโ€™d started believing, deep down, that Iโ€™d only been chosen to inherit because Tobias Hawthorne hadnโ€™t realized there was someone out there who suited his purposes better than I did.

A stone that killed at least as many birds. A more elegant glass ballerina. A sharper knife.

But he knew about Eve all along.
