Chapter no 21

The Final Gambit (The Inheritance Games, 3)

In Hawthorne House,ย fondueย involved twelve fondue pots accompanied by three full-sized chocolate fountains. Mrs. Laughlin had it all set up in the chefโ€™s kitchen within the hour.

Distractions arenโ€™t just distractions, I reminded myself.

Sometimes, you need them to break the loop.

โ€œIn terms of cheese fondue,โ€ Xander orated, โ€œweโ€™ve got your gruyรจre-based, your gouda-based, your beer cheddar, your fontina, your chรคllerhockerโ€”โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Max cut in. โ€œNow youโ€™re just making up words.โ€ โ€œAm I?โ€ Xander said in his most dashing voice. โ€œFor

dipping, weโ€™ve got your baguettes, your sourdough, breadsticks, croutons, bacon, prosciutto, salami, sopressata, apples, pears, and various vegetables, grilled or raw. Then thereโ€™s the dessert fondues! For the purists among us, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate fountains. More inventive dessert combinations are in the pots. Iย highlyย recommend the salted caramel double chocolate.โ€

Surveying the vast array of options for dessert dippers, Max picked up a strawberry in one hand and a graham cracker in the other.

โ€œHit me,โ€ Xander yelled, jogging backward. โ€œIโ€™m going wide!โ€

Max tossed the graham cracker. Xander caught it in his mouth. Grinning, Max dipped the strawberry in one of the dessert pots, took a bite, then moaned. โ€œFax me, this is good.โ€

Break the loop, I thought, so I began to make my way through the spread myself, dying with every bite. Beside me, Eve slowly started to do the same.

With a mouth full of bacon, Xander picked up a spare fondue fork and brandished it like a sword. โ€œEn garde!โ€

Max armed herself. The result was chaos. The kind of chaos that ended with Max and Xander both drenched from the fountains and Eve taking a dark chocolate banana to the chest.

โ€œI beg your chocolatey pardon,โ€ Xander said. Max whapped him with a breadstick.

Eve looked down at the mess that was her shirt. โ€œThis was my only top.โ€

I glanced at Max.ย You and I will be talking very soon.ย Then I turned to Eve. โ€œCome on,โ€ I said. โ€œIโ€™ll get you a new shirt.โ€

โ€œThisย is your closet?โ€ Eve was stunned. Racks, cabinets, and shelves stretched twelve feet overhead, all of them full. โ€œI know,โ€ I told her, remembering how Iโ€™d felt when

theyโ€™d brought the clothes in. โ€œYou should see the closet in the bedroom that used to be Skyeโ€™s. Itโ€™s nineteen hundred square feet, two stories tall, and has its own champagne bar.โ€

Eve stared at the clothes.

โ€œHelp yourself,โ€ I told her, but she didnโ€™t move. โ€œReally,โ€ I said. โ€œTake whatever you want.โ€

She reached for a pale green shirt but froze when she felt the fabric. I wasnโ€™t a fashion person, but the incredible softness of expensive clothes, theย feelย of themโ€”that was what still got me, too.

โ€œToby didnโ€™t want me to be a part of this.โ€ Eve just kept looking at that shirt. โ€œThe mansion. The food. The clothes.โ€ She took a breath, the sharp intake of air audible. โ€œHe hated this place.ย Hatedย it. And when I asked why, all he

would say was that the Hawthorne family wasnโ€™t what they appeared to be, that this family had secrets.โ€ She finally pulled the green shirt off the hanger. โ€œDark secrets. Maybe even dangerous ones.โ€

I thought about all the Hawthorne secrets Iโ€™d learned since coming hereโ€”not just the truth about Tobyโ€™s adoption or his role in the fire on Hawthorne Island, but everything else, too.

Nan killed her husband. Zara cheated on both of hers.

Skye named her sons after their fathers, and at least one of them was a dangerous man. Tobias Hawthorne bribed Nashโ€™s dad to stay away. Jameson watched Emily Laughlin die.

And that wasnโ€™t even taking into account the secrets Iโ€™d had a hand in creating since I got here. Iโ€™d allowed Grayson to cover up his motherโ€™s involvement in an attempt on my life and pin all the blame on Libbyโ€™s abusive ex. Iโ€™d looked the other way when Toby and Oren had decided that Sheffield Graysonโ€™s body needed to disappear.

Across from me, Eve was still waiting for me to say something.

โ€œIโ€™ll let you get dressed,โ€ I told her.

Back in my bedroom, I found myself wondering what other Hawthorne secrets I still didnโ€™t know. I went back to the photo of Toby, and this time, I let myself look directly at his eyes.ย Is this about you or me or this family? How many enemies do we have?

A knock broke into my thoughts. I opened my door to find Mr. Laughlin standing thereโ€”and Oren, along with Eveโ€™s guard, positioned down the hall.

โ€œPardon the interruption, Avery. Iโ€™ve got something for you.โ€ The old groundskeeper had a cart with him, filled with long rolls of paper.

Another special delivery?ย My heart rate ticked up. โ€œDid

these come by courier service?โ€

โ€œI dug these out for you myself.โ€ As gruff as Mr.

Laughlinโ€™s manner was, there was something almost gentle in his moss-colored eyes. โ€œYou just had a birthday. Each year followingย hisย birthday, Mr. Hawthorne had plans drawn up for the next expansion on the House.โ€

Tobias Hawthorne had never finished Hawthorne House.

Heโ€™d added on every year.

โ€œThese are the blueprints.โ€ Mr. Laughlin nodded to the cart as he wheeled it into the room. โ€œOne set for each year since we broke ground on the House. Thought you might want to see them if youโ€™re planning an addition of your own.โ€

โ€œMe?โ€ I said. โ€œAdd on to Hawthorne House?โ€

Eve stepped into the room, wearing the green silk shirt, and for a moment she stared at the blueprints the way sheโ€™d stared at the clothes in my closet. Then a figure appeared in the doorway.

Jameson.ย His face and body were drenched in mud. His

shirt was torn, his shoulder bleeding.

Mr. Laughlin put an arm around Eveโ€™s shoulder. โ€œCome on, missy. We should go.โ€
