Back in the library, Nash examined the envelope, the message, and the disk.
โThe Rooneys donโt have Toby,โ I announced. โTheyโre ruthless, and if they knew for sure Toby was alive, they would probably be making a real effort to feed his face to a pack of dogs, but Iโm almost certain they donโt have him.โ
Xander raised his right hand. โI have a question about faces and dogs.โ
I shuddered. โYou donโt want to know.โ
Grayson took up a perch on the edge of the tree-trunk desk, unbuttoning his suit jacket. โI can likewise clear the Graysons.โ
Eve gave him a look. โTheย Graysons?โ
โMy sire and his family,โ Grayson clarified, his face like stone. โTheyโre related to Colin Anders Wright, who died in the fire. Sheffield Grayson abandoned his wife and daughters some months back.โ
That was a lie. Sheffield Grayson was dead. Eveโs half sister had killed him to save me, and Oren had covered it up. But Eve gave no sign that she knew that, and based on what sheโd told us about her siblings, that tracked.
โRumors place my so-called father somewhere in the Caymans,โ Grayson continued smoothly. โIโve been keeping an eye on the rest of the family in his absence.โ
โDoes the Grayson family know about you?โ Jameson asked his brother. No banter, no sarcasm. He knew whatย familyย meant to Grayson.
โI saw no need for them to,โ came the reply. โBut I can
assure you that if Sheffield Graysonโs wife, sister, or daughters had a hand in this, I would know.โ
โYou hired someone.โ Jamesonโs eyes narrowed. โWith what money?โ
โInvest. Cultivate. Create.โ Grayson didnโt offer any more explanation than that before he stood. โIf weโve ruled out the families of Colin Anders Wright and Kaylie Rooney, that leaves only the family of the third victim: David Golding.โ
โIโll have someone look into it.โ Oren didnโt even step out of the shadows to speak.
โSeems like you do that a lot.โ Eve leveled a gaze in his direction.
โHeiress.โ Jameson suddenly stopped pacing. He picked up the envelope the message had come in. โThis was addressed toย you.โ
I heard what he was saying, the possibility heโd seen. โWhat if Toby isnโt the target of revenge?โ I said slowly. โWhat if I am?โ
โYou have a lot of enemies?โ Eve asked me.
โIn her position,โ Grayson murmured, โitโs hard not to.โ โWhat if weโre looking at this wrong?โ When Xander
paced, it wasnโt in straight lines or in circles. โWhat if itโs not about the message? What if we should be focusing on the code?โ
โThe game,โ Jameson translated. โWe all recognized that word trick.โ
โSure did.โ Nash hooked his thumbs in the pockets of his worn jeans. โWeโre looking for someone who knows how the old man played.โ
โWhat do you meanย how the old man played?โ Eve asked.
Grayson answered and kept it brief. โOur grandfather liked puzzles, riddles, codes.โ
For years, Tobias Hawthorne had laid out a challenge for his grandsons every Saturday morningโa game to play, a
multi-step puzzle to be solved.
โHe liked testing us,โ Nash drawled. โMaking the rules.
Watching us dance.โ
โNash has granddaddy issues,โ Xander confided to Eve. โItโs a tragic yet engrossing tale ofโโ
โYou donโt want to be finishing that sentence, little brother.โ There wasnโt anything explicitly dangerous or threatening in Nashโs tone, but Xander was no dummy.
โSure donโt!โ he agreed.
My thoughts raced. โIf weโre looking for someone who knows Tobias Hawthorneโs games, someone dangerous and bitter with a grudge against meโฆโ
โSkye.โ Jameson and Grayson said their motherโs name at once. Trying to kill me hadnโt worked out too well for her. But given that Sheffield Grayson had framed her for a murder attempt she hadnโt committed,ย notย trying to kill me hadnโt worked out too well for Skye Hawthorne, either.
What if this was her next play?
โWe need to confront her,โ Jameson said immediately. โTalk to herโin person.โ
โIโm going to have to veto that idea.โ Nash strolled toward Jameson, his pace unhurried.
โHow does that classic proverb go?โ Jameson mused. โYouโre not the boss of me? Itโs something like that. No, wait, I remember! Itโsย Youโre not the boss of me, wanker.โ
โExcellent use of British slang,โ Xander commented. Jameson shrugged. โIโm a man of the world now.โ
โJamieโs right.โ Grayson managed to say that without grimacing. โThe only way weโll get anything out of Skye is face-to-face.โ
No one could hurt Grayson, hurt any of them, like Skye could. โEven if she is behind this,โ I said, โsheโll deny everything.โ
That was what Skye did. In her mind, she was always the victim, and when it came to her sons, she knew just how to twist the knife.
โWhat if you show her the disk?โ Eve suggested quietly. โIf she recognizes it, maybe you can use it to get her talking.โ
โIf Skye had any idea what that disk was worth,โ I replied, โshe definitely wouldnโt have sent it to me.โ Skye Hawthorne had been almost entirely disinherited. No way was she parting with anything valuable.
โSo if she makes a play for the disk,โ Grayson stated archly, โweโll know that sheโs aware of its value, and ergo, not behind the abduction.โ
I stared Grayson down. โIโm not letting any of you do this without me.โ
โAvery.โ Oren stepped out of the shadows and gave me a look that was part paternal, part military commander. โI strongly advise against any kind of confrontation with Skye Hawthorne.โ
โIโve found duct tape more effective than advice, myself,โ Nash told Oren conversationally.
โItโs settled, then!โ Xander said brightly. โFamily reunion, Hawthorne style!โ
โUh, Xander?โ Max appeared in the doorway, looking rumpled. She held up a phone. โYou left this on your nightstand.โ
Nightstand?ย I shot Max a look. Iโd known that she and Xander were friends, but that wasย notย a friendly kind of rumple. โRebecca texted,โ Max told Xander, conspicuously ignoring my look. โSheโs on her way here.โ
I was distracted enough by the idea of Max and Xander spending the night together that it took a moment for the rest to penetrate.ย Rebecca.ย Seeing Eve would destroy Emilyโs sister.
โNew plan,โ Xander announced. โIโm skipping family reunion. The rest of you can report back.โ
Eve frowned. โWhoโs Rebecca?โ
