Chapter no 88

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

You beautiful beaches.โ€ Max was beyond pleased with Xanderโ€™s offering

โ€”enough so that it took her a moment to shoot me a reproving look. โ€œI feel obliged to warn you, youโ€™re looking a little pale, and the great Dr. Liu is not going to be pleased.โ€

I took that to mean that my doctor would have been really displeased to know what Iโ€™d actually been up to in the last twelve hours. โ€œThank you.โ€ I waited until Max looked at me before I continued. โ€œFor bringing your mom here.โ€

I knew enough about my best friend to know that it hadnโ€™t been an easy call to make.

โ€œYeah, wellโ€ฆโ€ Max shrugged. โ€œThank you. For getting blown up.โ€

For giving you a reason to callโ€”and giving her a reason to pick up.ย โ€œDo you think youโ€™ll be headed home soon?โ€

I didnโ€™t want Max to leave, but at the same time, my best friend had her own life to live, and I couldnโ€™t help thinking that sheโ€™d be safer doing that far away from Hawthorne House. Away from me, from the Hawthorne family, from everything Iโ€™d inherited along with Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s billions.

Poison tree and all.

When Thea called, I almost didnโ€™t pick up. That was why Xander had given me her number. And yetโ€ฆ

โ€œHello?โ€ I said darkly.

There was a moment of hesitation, and then: โ€œI did some digging and found out who vandalized your locker. It was a freshman. You want the

name?โ€

Silly me. Iโ€™d been expecting an apology. โ€œNo.โ€ I was tempted to leave it there, but I couldnโ€™t. โ€œIs Rebecca okay?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s shaken, but fine.โ€ Theaโ€™s voice was soft, but she spoiled the effect by scoffing audibly. โ€œFine enough to yell at me for putting you in danger.โ€

โ€œYeah, wellโ€ฆโ€ I shrugged, even though Thea couldnโ€™t see me. โ€œRebeccaโ€™s one to talk.โ€ That I could joke about this was a true testament to how far Rebecca and I had come.

โ€œI had a choice.โ€ Theaโ€™s voice shook. She was diabolical and complicated and about a thousand other things, but she wasnโ€™t evil. Sheโ€™d been worried about me. โ€œI had to choose her. Can you understand that, Avery?โ€ Thea didnโ€™t wait for my answer. โ€œFor me, itโ€™s always going to be Rebecca. She doesnโ€™t believe that, but no matter how long it takes, Iโ€™m going to keep choosing her.โ€

I had never understood what it felt like for one person to be your everything, to look at that person andย know. Iโ€™d never believed myself capable of that. I hadnโ€™t wanted to be capable of it.

When Thea and I hung up the phone, I went to see Grayson.
