Chapter no 85

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

Youโ€™re going to keep her a secret?โ€ I demanded, once we were out of Mellieโ€™s earshot. โ€œEve?โ€

Toby took my elbow and guided me to the exit. โ€œThereโ€™s a car outside,โ€ he told me. โ€œKeyโ€™s in the ignition. Take it and drive north.โ€

I stared at him. โ€œThatโ€™s it?โ€ I said. โ€œThatโ€™s all you have to say to me?โ€ Eveโ€™s faceโ€”Emilyโ€™sโ€”was still fresh in my mind.

Toby reached out and brushed the hair off of my forehead. โ€œIn my heart,โ€ he said quietly, โ€œyou were always mine.โ€

I swallowed. โ€œBut biologically, Iโ€™m not.โ€ โ€œBiology isnโ€™t everything.โ€

I knew in that moment that Iโ€™d gotten this much right: Tobyย hadย sought me out after my mother died. He had been watching me. He had wanted to make sure that I was okay.

โ€œMy mom and I had this game,โ€ I told him, trying my best not to cry. โ€œWe had lots of games, actuallyโ€”but this one, her favorite, it was about secrets.โ€

He stared off into the distance for a moment. โ€œI made her promise never to tell youโ€”about me, about my family. But if it was just a game, if you guessedโ€ฆโ€ He looked back at me, and his own eyes were shining. โ€œDamn it, Hannah.โ€

โ€œHow the hell was I supposed to guess?โ€ The words burst out of my mouth. I was furious suddenlyโ€”at her, at him. โ€œShe said that she had a secret about the day I was born.โ€

Toby said nothing.

โ€œYou signed my birth certificate.โ€ I wanted answers. He owed me that at least.

He reached out to lay a hand against my cheek. โ€œThere was a storm that night,โ€ he said quietly. โ€œWorst one Iโ€™d ever seenโ€”Hawthorne Island

included. I shouldnโ€™t have been there in the first place. Iโ€™d managed to stay away from Hannah for three long years. But something brought me back. I just wanted toย seeย her again, even if I couldnโ€™t let her see me.

โ€œShe was pregnant. Forecasts were calling for a hurricane. And she was alone. I was going to stay away. She was never supposed to know that I was there, but then the power went outโ€”and she went into labor.โ€

With me.ย I couldnโ€™t say that out loud, couldnโ€™t say anything, couldnโ€™t even tell him that my mother had been capable of making decisions forย herself.

โ€œThe ambulance didnโ€™t make it in time,โ€ Toby said, his voice growing hoarse. โ€œShe neededย someone.โ€

โ€œYou.โ€ I managed one word this timeโ€”just one.

โ€œI brought you into this world, Avery Kylie Grambs.โ€

There it was. My motherโ€™s secret. Toby was there the night I was born. Heโ€™d delivered me. I wondered what my mom had felt, seeing him again after years. I wondered if heโ€™d called herย Hannah, O Hannah, and if sheโ€™d tried to make him stay.

โ€œAvery Kylie Grambs.โ€ I repeated the last words Toby had said to me. There was something about the way heโ€™d said my full name. โ€œItโ€™s an anagram.โ€ I swallowed again, and for some reason, whatever force had been holding back my tears gave way. โ€œBut you knew that.โ€

Toby didnโ€™t deny it. โ€œYour mom had a middle name all picked out. Kylie

โ€”like Kaylie but minus a letter.โ€

That hit me hard. Iโ€™d never known that I was named after my motherโ€™s sister. Iโ€™d never known about Kaylie at all.

โ€œHannah was set on giving you Rickyโ€™s last name,โ€ Toby continued. โ€œBut she didnโ€™t like the first name heโ€™d picked out.โ€

Natasha.ย โ€œRicky wasnโ€™t there.โ€ I blinked back tears and stared at Toby. โ€œYou were.โ€

โ€œSomethingย Kylie Grambs.โ€ Toby smiled and gave a little shrug. โ€œI couldnโ€™t resist.โ€

He was a Hawthorne. He loved puzzles and riddles and codes. โ€œYou chose my name.โ€ I didnโ€™t phrase it as a question. โ€œYou suggested Avery.โ€

โ€œA Very Risky Gamble.โ€ Toby looked down. โ€œWhat I took that night. What Hannah took when she nursed me back to life, knowing what her family would do to her if they found out.โ€

A Very Risky Gambleโ€”the reason Tobias Hawthorne had left me his fortune. Had he recognized his sonโ€™s fingerprints all over that name? Had he suspected, from the moment he heard it, that I was a link to Toby?

โ€œWhen the ambulance got there, I disappeared,โ€ Toby continued. โ€œI snuck into the hospital one last time to see you both.โ€

โ€œYou signed the birth certificate,โ€ I said.

โ€œWith your fatherโ€™s name, not mine. It was the least he owed her.โ€ โ€œAnd then you left.โ€ I stared at him, trying not to hate him for that. โ€œI had to.โ€

Something like fury rose up inside me. โ€œNo, you didnโ€™t.โ€ My mom had loved him. Sheโ€™d spent her entire life loving him, and Iโ€™d never even known.

โ€œYou have to understand. My fatherโ€™s resources were unlimited. He never stopped looking for me. I had to stay on the move if I wanted to stay dead.โ€

I thought about Tobias Hawthorne, eating at a hole-in-the-wall diner in New Castle, Connecticut. Had it taken him six years to track Toby there?

Had he thought his son would come back? Had he realized who my mother was?

Had he thought, even for a moment, that I was Tobyโ€™s?

โ€œWhat are you going to do now?โ€ I asked, my voice like sandpaper in my throat. โ€œThe world knows youโ€™re alive. Your father is dead. As far as we know, Sheffield Grayson was the only person who realized the old man had buried the police report about Hawthorne Island. Heโ€™s the only one who knewโ€”โ€

โ€œI know what youโ€™re thinking, Avery.โ€ Tobyโ€™s eyes hardened. โ€œBut I canโ€™t come back. I promised myself a long time ago that I would never forget what I did, that I would never move on. Hannah wouldnโ€™t let me turn myself in, but exile is what I deserved.โ€

โ€œWhat about what other people deserve?โ€ I asked vehemently. โ€œDid my mother deserve to die without you there? Did she deserve to spend my entire life in love with a ghost?โ€

โ€œHannah deserved the world.โ€

โ€œSo why didnโ€™t you give it to her?โ€ I asked. โ€œWhy was punishing yourself more important than whatย sheย wanted?โ€

Why was it more important than what I wanted now?

โ€œI donโ€™t expect you to understand,โ€ Toby told me gentlyโ€”more gently than heโ€™d ever spoken to me as Harry.

โ€œI do understand,โ€ I said. โ€œYouโ€™re not staying gone because you have to. Youโ€™re making a choice, and itโ€™s selfish.โ€ I thought about Mr. and Mrs. Laughlin, about Rebeccaโ€™s mother. โ€œWhat gives you the right to deceive the people who love you? To make that kind of decision for everyone else?โ€

He didnโ€™t answer.

โ€œYou have a daughter now,โ€ I told him, my voice low.

He looked at me, his expression never wavering. โ€œI have two.โ€

In the span of a heartbeat, fury gave way to devastation. Tobias Hawthorne the Second wasnโ€™t my father. He hadnโ€™t raised me. I didnโ€™t carry a single drop of his blood.

But heโ€™d just called me his daughter.

โ€œI want you to go outside, princess. Get in the car and drive north.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t do that,โ€ I said. โ€œSheffield Grayson is dead! Thereโ€™s a body. The police are going to want to know what happened. And as screwed up as what Mellie did is, she doesnโ€™t deserve to go down for murder. If we tell the police what really happenedโ€”โ€

โ€œI know men like Sheffield Grayson.โ€ Tobyโ€™s expression shifted, until it was utterly impossible to read. โ€œHeโ€™s covered his tracks. No one knows where he is or who he was after. There will be nothing to tie him to this warehouseโ€”nothing to even suggest he was in the state.โ€

โ€œSo?โ€ I said.

Toby looked past me, just for a moment. โ€œI know more than I wish I did about what it takes to make somethingโ€”or someoneโ€”disappear.โ€

โ€œWhat about his family?โ€ I asked.ย Graysonโ€™s family.ย โ€œI canโ€™t let youโ€”โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re notย lettingย me do anything.โ€ Toby reached out to touch my face.

โ€œHorrible girl,โ€ he whispered. โ€œDonโ€™t you know by now? No oneย letsย a Hawthorne do anything.โ€

That was the truth.

โ€œThis is wrong,โ€ I said again. He couldnโ€™t just make that body disappear. โ€œI have to, Avery.โ€ Toby was implacable. โ€œFor Eve. The spotlight, the

media circus, the rumors, the stalkers, the threatsโ€”I canโ€™t save you from that, Avery Kylie Grambs. I would if I could, but itโ€™s too late. The old man did what he did. He pulled you onto the board. But if I stay in shadows, if I make this disappear, ifย Iย disappearโ€”then we can save Eve.โ€

It had never been clearer: To Toby, the Hawthorne name, the moneyโ€”it was a curse.ย The tree is poison, donโ€™t you see? It poisoned S and Z and me.

โ€œItโ€™s not all bad,โ€ I said. โ€œKidnapping and murder attempts aside, Iโ€™m doing fine.โ€

That was a ridiculous statement, but Toby didnโ€™t even laugh. โ€œAnd you will stay fine, as long as I stay dead.โ€ He sounded so certain of that. โ€œGo. Get in the car. Drive. If anyone asks you what happened, claim amnesia. Iโ€™ll take care of the rest.โ€

This was really it. He was really going to walk away from me. He was going to disappear again. โ€œI know about the adoption,โ€ I said, desperate to keep him hereโ€”to make him stay. โ€œI know your biological mother was the Laughlinsโ€™ daughter and that she was coerced into the adoption. I know that you blame your parents for keeping secrets, for ruining the three of you. But your sistersโ€”they need you.โ€

Skye was sitting in a jail cell, but she wasnโ€™t guiltyโ€”this time, at least. Zara was more human than she wanted to admit. And Rebecca? Her mother was still mourning Toby.

โ€œI read the postcards you wrote to my mom,โ€ I continued. โ€œI talked to Jackson Currie. I know everythingโ€”and Iโ€™m telling you: You donโ€™t have to stay away anymore.โ€

โ€œYou sound just like her.โ€ Tobyโ€™s expression softened. โ€œI never could win an argument with Hannah.โ€ He closed his eyes. โ€œSome people are smart. Some people are good.โ€ He opened his eyes and put a hand on each of my shoulders. โ€œAnd some people are both.โ€

I knew, with a strange kind of prescience, that this moment would never leave me. โ€œYouโ€™re not staying, are you?โ€ I asked. โ€œNo matter what I say.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ Toby pulled me in. Iโ€™d never been much of a hugger, but for a moment, I let myself be held.

When Toby finally let me go, I reached into my pocket and pulled out the small metal disk, the one heโ€™d told my mother was valuable. โ€œWhat is this?โ€

It was the last question I had for him. The last chance I had of making him stay.

Toby moved like lightning. One second, I held the disk in my hand, and the next, he had it. โ€œSomething Iโ€™ll be taking with me,โ€ he said.

โ€œWhat arenโ€™t you telling me?โ€ I asked.

He shook his head. โ€œHorrible girl,โ€ he whispered, his voice tender.

I thought of my mother, of every word sheโ€™d written to him about me, of the way heโ€™d come for me tonight.

You have a daughter, Iโ€™d told him.

I have two.

โ€œAm I ever going to see you again?โ€ I asked, my throat closing in on the words.

He leaned forward, pressed a kiss to my forehead, and stepped back. โ€œIt would be a very risky gamble.โ€

I opened my mouth to reply, but the door to the warehouse flew inward.

Men poured inside. Orenโ€™s men.

My head of security stepped between me and Toby Hawthorne and then leveled a deadly look at Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s only son. โ€œI think itโ€™s time we had a little talk.โ€
