Chapter no 84

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

Iย killed him.โ€ Mellie sounded dazed. โ€œIโ€ฆ He was holding a gun. And he was going toโ€ฆ And Iโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEasy,โ€ Toby murmured. He stepped forward and removed the gun from her hand. Mellie let him.

What just happened here?ย Trying not to look at the body on the ground

โ€”atย Graysonโ€™s fatherโ€”I made my way out of the unit. โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€ That was probably the biggest understatement of my life. โ€œYou sold me out, Mellie. You left. Why would youโ€”โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t supposed to be like this.โ€ Mellie shook her head, and for a few seconds, it seemed like she couldnโ€™t stop shaking it. โ€œAnd we didnโ€™t sell you out. This was never about the money.โ€

We?ย I thought dizzily. โ€œWhoโ€™s we?โ€ Toby asked.

In answer, Mellie swallowed and reached a finger up to her eye. I wasnโ€™t sure what she was doing at first, but then she removed a contact lens. I walked toward her, and she blinked up at me. The contact sheโ€™d removed was colored. Her left eye was still brown, but her right eye was a vibrant blue, with an amber circle around the center.ย Just like Eliโ€™s.

โ€œMy brother and I agreed that I should be the one to wear contacts,โ€ Mellie said, her voice still a little shaky.

โ€œEliโ€™s your brother.โ€ My mind raced. โ€œHe engineered a threat against me so he could stay close, then he leaked information about Toby to the press. And then youโ€”โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t supposed to be like this,โ€ Mellie repeated. โ€œWe were just trying to flush Toby out of hiding. We just wanted to talk. When Mr. Grayson offered his assistanceโ€”โ€

โ€œYou kidnapped me for him.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Mellieโ€™s response was instantaneous. โ€œI meanโ€ฆย kind of.โ€ She

shook her head again. โ€œAfter Grayson and Jameson went to see him in Arizona, Sheffield Grayson sent a man to follow them to True North. To watch them.โ€ I thought about the professional in the woods. Oren had pulled me out of the tubโ€”and sent one of his men after the interloper. โ€œEli caught the guy,โ€ Mellie continued. โ€œHe tackled him, and thenโ€ฆ they talked.โ€

โ€œAbout me?โ€ I paused. โ€œAbout Toby?โ€

Mellie didnโ€™t answer either question. โ€œWe didnโ€™t know who the man was working for,โ€ she said instead. โ€œNot at first. But we all wanted the same thing.โ€

Toby.ย โ€œSo Eli leaked those pictures,โ€ I said, my throat constricting. โ€œAnd then a few days later, someone blew up my plane.โ€

โ€œThat wasnโ€™t us! Eli and I never wanted to hurt you. We never wanted to hurt anyone!โ€ Mellieโ€™s eyes drifted toward Tobyโ€™s. โ€œWe just needed to talk.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€ I demanded, but Mellie didnโ€™t answer me. Now that sheโ€™d

looked over at Toby, she couldnโ€™t stop staring at him. โ€œDo I know you?โ€ he asked her, his brow furrowing. Mellie looked down. โ€œYou knew my mother.โ€

The world shifted under my feetโ€”suddenly, abruptly.ย Sheffield Grayson said he had a DNA test linking me to Toby.ย I sucked in a breath.ย But Tobyโ€™s not my father. It wasnโ€™tย myย DNA.

โ€œThis is my mom.โ€ Mellie pulled out her phone and showed Toby a picture. โ€œI donโ€™t expect you to remember her. Pretty sure she was just another wild night for you that summer.โ€

The summer he โ€œdied,โ€ย I thought. Across from me, Toby looked at the photo, and I remembered Zara saying that Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s investigators had talked to at least one of the women that Toby had slept with that summer.ย Mellieโ€™s mother?

Across from me, I could see Toby working his way through it, too. โ€œSheffield Grayson said you gave him a DNA sample to test,โ€ I said,

staring at Mellie. โ€œHe was certain I was Tobyโ€™s daughter.โ€ I glanced toward Toby, and the muscles in my stomach twisted. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not. Am I?โ€

โ€œNot by blood.โ€ Toby held my gaze a moment longer, then turned back to Mellie. โ€œYouโ€™re right. I donโ€™t remember your mother.โ€

โ€œI was five,โ€ Mellie told him. โ€œEli was six. Our parents were in a bad place, and suddenly, Mom was pregnant. She didnโ€™t know your name. She

didnโ€™t know the kind of money you came from.โ€

โ€œBut you figured it out?โ€ I said. I couldnโ€™t stop staring at Mellie. Alisa had told me once that she was one of the ones that Nash had โ€œsavedโ€ from unfortunate circumstances. I had no idea what those circumstances were, but it couldnโ€™t be coincidence that both she and her brother had ended up in the Hawthornesโ€™ employ.

How long had they been planning this?

โ€œYou said your mother was pregnant,โ€ Toby said quietly. โ€œDid she have the child?โ€

The child,ย I thought, my stomach sinking.ย His child.ย The DNA that Mellie had given Sheffield Grayson, the DNA that had come up as a match for Tobyโ€™sโ€”it wasnโ€™t mine.

โ€œMy sister,โ€ Mellie replied. โ€œHer name is Evelyn. She goes by Eve.โ€

I saw somethingโ€”just a hint of emotionโ€”in Tobyโ€™s eyes. โ€œA palindrome.โ€

โ€œShe chose it herself,โ€ Mellie replied quietly, โ€œwhen she was three years old, for that reason. Sheโ€™s nineteen now.โ€ Mellie turned to me. โ€œAnd everythingย youย have should be hers.โ€

For the first time, I heard surety burning in Mellieโ€™s tone, and I understood that while she hadnโ€™t meant for me to be hurt, it was a risk sheโ€™d been willing to take, because Toby Hawthorne did have a daughter.

It just wasnโ€™t me.

Did the old man know? Did Mellie ever try to tell him?

โ€œWhat do you want from me?โ€ Toby asked.

โ€œI want Eve taken care of,โ€ Mellie said fiercely. โ€œSheโ€™s a Hawthorne.โ€ My gaze cut to Tobyโ€™s. โ€œAnd a Laughlin,โ€ I said quietly. I wasnโ€™t Mrs.

Laughlinโ€™s great-granddaughter. I wasnโ€™t Rebeccaโ€™s niece, Emilyโ€™s niece. Eve was.

She was the one who belonged here.

I swallowed. โ€œBring her to Hawthorne House.โ€ The words chafed against my throat, but I wasnโ€™t going to give in to that hurt. โ€œThereโ€™s plenty of room.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Tobyโ€™s voice was blade-sharp.

Mellie scrolled furiously through her phone and shoved another picture in his face. โ€œLook at her,โ€ she demanded. โ€œSheโ€™s yourย daughter, and you have no idea what her life has been like.โ€

Toby looked at the photo. Without meaning to, I stepped forward. I looked, too, and the second I saw Mellieโ€™s sisterโ€™s face, I stopped breathing. Eve was a dead ringer for Emily Laughlin. Strawberry-blonde hair, like sunlight through amber. Emerald eyes, too big for her face. Heart-shaped

lips, a scattering of freckles.

โ€œMy daughter isnโ€™t coming to Hawthorne House,โ€ Toby told Mellie. โ€œIf you bring me to her, I will see that sheโ€™s taken care of. Discreetly.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean?โ€ I asked, finally recovering my voice. Toby was talking about leaving. Like he was just going to walk away. After everything Iโ€™d been through, everything that Jameson, Xander, Grayson, and I had done to look for him.

โ€œDo you promise?โ€ Mellie stared at Toby like I wasnโ€™t even in the room. โ€œI promise.โ€ Tobyโ€™s eyes traveled to mine. โ€œBut first,โ€ he continued

softly, โ€œAvery and I need to have a conversation alone.โ€
