Iย woke at dawn the next morning and found Oren standing directly outside my door. โHave you been out here all night?โ I asked him.
He gave me a look. โWhat do you think?โ
Heโd warned me that if the news about Toby got out, it would be a security liability. I had no ideaย howย the news had gotten out, but here we were.
โRight,โ I said.
โConsider yourself on a six-foot leash,โ Oren told me. โYouโre not leaving my side until this dies down.ย Ifย it dies down.โ
I winced. โHow bad is it?โ
Orenโs reply was matter-of-fact. โI have Carlos and Heinrich posted at the entrance to your wing. Theyโve already had to turn away Zara, Constantine, and both Laughlins, in some cases forcibly. And thatโs not even touching what Skye tried at the gates, in full view of the paparazzi.โ
โHow many paparazzi?โ I asked tentatively. โDouble what weโve seen before.โ
โHow is that even possible?โ Iโd already been front-page news before last nightโs interview had aired.
โIf thereโs one thing the world loves more than an accidental heiress,โ Oren replied, โitโs a lost heir.โ He very deliberately did not say,ย I told you so, but I knew he was thinking it.
โI am sorry about this,โ I said. โSo am I.โ
โWhat doย youย have to be sorry for?โ I asked flippantly.
Orenโs answer wasnโt flippant at all. โWhen I said that I would be within six feet of you at all times, I meant me, personally. I never should have delegated that responsibility, under any circumstance.โ
โYouโre human,โ I said. โYou have to sleep.โ He didnโt reply, and I
crossed my arms over my chest. โWhereโs Eli?โ โEli has been removed from the premises.โ
โWhy?โ I demanded, but my brain was already whirring. Oren had apologized to me. He blamed himself for allowing someone else in on my immediate protection detail, and that someone else had been barred from Hawthorne House.
Eli had been the one guarding me when Iโd gone to talk to Mrs.
Laughlin about Toby.
โHe leaked the pictures.โ I answered my own question. Eli had been on my protection detail for over a week. Heโd been in a position to overhearโฆ a lot.
โEli isnโt as good at hiding his digital footprint as my man is at uncovering digital ghosts,โ Oren told me, his voice like steel. โHe leaked the photos. In all likelihood, heโs also the one whoโs responsible for the heart and the snake.โ
I stared at Oren. โWhy?โ
โI assigned him to your protection detail at school. He obviously wanted that extended to the estate. I trusted Eli. That trust was clearly misplaced. For whatever reasonโpossibly a payout from the pressโhe wanted to be closer to you. I didnโt see it. I should have.โ
Iโd never felt unsafe around Eli. He hadnโt harmed me, and he could have, if that had been his goal.ย For whatever reason, I replayed Orenโs words in my head.ย Possibly a payout from the press.
I thought of Maxโs ex-boyfriend, whoโd tried to access her phone, so he could sell our texts. About my โfatherโ and Skye selling their stories. About the payout that Alisa had arranged, back at the beginning, to have Libbyโs mother sign an NDA.
It was starting to sink in that for the rest of my life, the people I met, the people I became close toโthere would always be a chance that they saw me as a payout.
โThis is the second time that my error in judgment has cost you dearly,โ Oren said stiffly. โIf you feel the need to hire new security, Iโm sure Alisa couldโโ
โNo!โ I said. If Alisa hired someone, that personโs loyalty would be to her. Whatever mistakes Oren had made, I believed that his allegiance was to me. Heโd do whatever he could to protect me, because Tobias Hawthorne
had asked him to.
โYes?โ Oren said curtly. It took me a second to realize that he wasnโt talking to me. He was wearing an earpiece and talking to one of his men.ย How many of them can we trust? How many of them would sell me out for the right payout?
โLet them through,โ Oren ordered, and then he turned back to me. โYour sister and Nash have arrived at the gates.โ
