Chapter no 48

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

Iย stared out the planeโ€™s window, watching the mountain get smaller and farther away until the jet hit cruising height. Iโ€™d barely slept, but I didnโ€™t feel tired.

โ€œWhat did Eli mean,ย a professional?โ€ I said out loud. โ€œA professionalย what?โ€ I turned my attention from the view out the jetโ€™s window to Max, who was seated beside me. Iโ€™d caught her up to speedโ€”on the security situationย andย the hot tub. โ€œA private detective? A spy?โ€

โ€œAn assassin!โ€ Max said giddily. She read a lot of books and watched a lot of TV shows. โ€œSorry.โ€ She held up a hand and tried to appear a little less enthralled with this latest turn of events. โ€œAssassins, bad. Iโ€™m sure the man in the woods wasnโ€™t a deadly assassin from an ancient league of deadly assassins. Probably.โ€

Before inheriting, I would have told Max that she was reaching, butย Who would want me dead?ย wasnโ€™t a dismissive question anymore. It was a question with answers.ย Skye.ย I thought about confronting Ricky at the gala. Libby had fought with him, too. If sheโ€™d told him that I was getting emancipated, if heโ€™d told Skye that their golden ticket was disappearingโ€ฆ

What exactly would they do?ย Heโ€™s one of my heirs. If something happens to meโ€ฆ

โ€œNo one is going to hurt you.โ€ Grayson sat opposite me, with Jameson beside him. โ€œIsnโ€™t that right, Jamie?โ€ Graysonโ€™s tone sharpened. I got the feeling that he wasnโ€™t just talking about the man in the woods.

โ€œIf I werenโ€™t so confident in our brotherly affection for each other,โ€ Jameson replied languidly, โ€œI would find that comment a bit pointed.โ€

โ€œPointed?โ€ Xander repeated in faux horror. โ€œGray?ย Never.โ€

โ€œSo,โ€ I said, before this situation could devolve, โ€œwhoโ€™s up for a friendly game of poker?โ€

โ€œI call.โ€ I stared Thea down. She had a good poker faceโ€”but mine was better.

Thea laid down her hand: a full house. I laid down mine: the same. But aces were high, and I had them. I went to collect the pot, but Jameson stopped me.

โ€œNot so fast, Heiress. Iโ€™m still in. And I haveโ€ฆโ€ He shot me a wicked little smile that made me feel like I was right back in the hot tub. โ€œNothing.โ€ He showed his cards.

โ€œYou always did talk a big game,โ€ Thea said.

Beside her, Rebeccaโ€™s phone buzzed. Rebecca looked down at it. This time, when Thea reached for it, Rebecca was faster. โ€œNo.โ€

The phone buzzed again. And again. Thea caught a glimpse of the screen, and her expression shifted.

โ€œItโ€™s your mom.โ€ Thea tried to catch Rebeccaโ€™s gaze. โ€œBex?โ€ Rebecca turned the phone off.

โ€œThat wasnโ€™t what I meant,โ€ Thea said. โ€œMaybe you should see what she wants.โ€

Rebecca seemed to fold in on herself a little. โ€œIโ€™ll be home soon enough.โ€

โ€œBex, your momโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t tell me what she needs.โ€ Rebeccaโ€™s voice was soft, but her whole body seemed to vibrate with intensity. โ€œYou think I donโ€™t know sheโ€™s not okay? Do you honestly think I needย youย to tell me that?โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€”โ€

โ€œShe looks at me, and itโ€™s like Iโ€™m not even there.โ€ Rebecca stared holes in the table. โ€œMaybe if I were more like Em, maybe if I were better at matteringโ€”โ€

โ€œYou matter.โ€ Theaโ€™s voice had gone almost guttural.

โ€œYou know,โ€ Max said awkwardly, โ€œthis seems kind of like a private conversation, so maybeโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t matter enough.โ€ Rebeccaโ€™s voice went brittle. โ€œItโ€™s been fun, running around, playing detective, pretending the real world away, but it canโ€™t just be like this.โ€

โ€œLike what?โ€ Thea reached for Rebeccaโ€™s hand.

โ€œLikeย this. The way you find reasons to touch me.โ€ Rebecca pulled her hand back from Theaโ€™s. โ€œThe way I let you. You were my world, and I would have done anything for you. But I begged you not to cover for Emily that night, and youโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t do this.โ€ If Thea were anyone else, she would have sounded like she was begging.

โ€œIf I were better at matteringโ€ฆโ€ Rebecca spoke louder. โ€œIf, for once in my life, Iโ€™d been enough for anyoneโ€”for the girl Iย lovedโ€”my sister might still be alive.โ€

Thea had no response. Silence descended again. Painful, awkward, excruciating silence.

Jameson was the one who put Thea out of her misery. โ€œSo, Heiress,โ€ he said, throwing out a subject change like he was throwing a tarp over a fire. โ€œHow are we going to go about getting that ring?โ€
