Chapter no 35

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

Hello?โ€

For a moment, there was silence on the phone. โ€œAvery?โ€

I recognized that low, rich voice in a heartbeat.ย Not Jameson.

โ€œGrayson?โ€ Heโ€™d never called me before. โ€œDid something happen? Are you

โ€”โ€

โ€œJameson dared me to call.โ€

Nothingโ€”literally nothingโ€”about that sentence made sense. โ€œJameson what?โ€

โ€œJameson when, Jameson where, Jamesonย who?โ€ That was Jameson, in the background, his voice taking on a musical lilt, his tone almost philosophical.

โ€œAm I on speakerphone?โ€ I asked. โ€œAnd is Jamesonย drunk?โ€

โ€œHe shouldnโ€™t be,โ€ Grayson said, sounding truly disgruntled. โ€œHe doesnโ€™t really turn down dares.โ€

Grayson wasnโ€™t slurring his words. His speech wasnโ€™t slow. His voice coated me, surrounded meโ€”but it occurred to me suddenly thatย Graysonย might be drunk.

โ€œLet me guess,โ€ I said. โ€œYouโ€™re playing Drink or Dare.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re really good at guessing things,โ€ drunk Grayson said. โ€œDo you think the old man knew that about you?โ€ His tone was hushed and almost confessional. โ€œDo you think that he knew that you wereโ€ฆ you?โ€

I heard a thud in the background. There was a long pause, and then one of themโ€”I was betting on Jamesonโ€”started cracking up.

โ€œWe have to go,โ€ Grayson said with a great deal of dignity, but when he went to hang up the phone, he must have hit the wrong button, because I could still hear the two of them.

โ€œI think we can both agree,โ€ Jameson said, โ€œthat itโ€™s time for Drink or Dare to give way to Drink or Truth.โ€

A better person probably would have hung up right then, but I turned the volume on my phone all the way up.

โ€œWhat did you say to Avery,โ€ I heard Jameson ask, โ€œthe night we solved the old manโ€™s puzzle?โ€

Grayson hadnโ€™t said anything to me that night. But the next day, after heโ€™d sent Skye on her way, heโ€™d had plenty to say.ย I will always protect you. But thisโ€ฆ usโ€ฆ It canโ€™t happen, Avery.

โ€œBecause right after that,โ€ Jameson continued, โ€œshe took to the tunnels with me.โ€

Grayson started to say somethingโ€”what, I couldnโ€™t quite hearโ€”but then he cut off. โ€œThe door,โ€ Grayson said, clear as day. He sounded dumbfounded.

Someoneโ€™s at the door, I realized. And then I heard some more muffled sounds. And then I heard Graysonโ€™s father.

At first, I couldnโ€™t entirely make out the words being exchanged, but at some point, either the conversation moved closer to the phone, or the phone moved closer to the conversation, because suddenly, I hear every word.

โ€œYou obviously arenโ€™t surprised to see me.โ€ That was Grayson. Heโ€™d sobered up quickly.

โ€œIโ€™ve built three different companies from the ground up. You donโ€™t achieve what I have achieved without an eye to potential eventualities. Potential risks. Frankly, young man, I expected Skye to tell you about me years ago.โ€

A knot in my stomach twisted. Poor Grayson. His father saw him as a

risk.

โ€œYou were married when I was conceived.โ€ Graysonโ€™s tone was neutral

โ€”almost dangerously so. โ€œStill are. You have children. I canโ€™t imagine that you are happy at my intrusion on your life, so letโ€™s keep this short, shall we?โ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you cut to the chase and tell me why youโ€™re really here?โ€ That was a demand. An order. โ€œYou were recently cut out of the family fortune. Financially speaking, you may have found that you have certainโ€ฆ needs.โ€

โ€œYou think weโ€™re here for money?โ€ That was Jameson.

โ€œIโ€™ve found that the simplest explanation is most often the correct one. If youโ€™re here for a payoutโ€”โ€

โ€œI am not.โ€

My entire body felt tense. I could see Grayson in my mindโ€™s eye, every muscle in his body taut, but his expression even and cool.ย Bribe. Threaten. Buyout.ย Grayson had been raised to be formidable. There was a reason heโ€™d already mentioned the manโ€™s wife.

โ€œFor reasons I wonโ€™t be sharing with you,โ€ I heard him say, โ€œI am looking into what happened twenty years ago on Hawthorne Island.โ€

The pause that greeted those words told me that Sheffield Grayson hadnโ€™t been expecting that. โ€œAre you, now?โ€

โ€œMy sources have led me to believe that the press coverage of the tragedy is, shall we sayโ€ฆ incomplete.โ€

โ€œWhat sources?โ€

I could practicallyย hearย Grayson smile. โ€œIโ€™ll make you a deal. You tell me what the news stories left out, and Iโ€™ll tell you what my sources have said about Colin.โ€

At the mention of his nephewโ€™s name, Sheffield Graysonโ€™s voice went too low for me to hear. Whatever heโ€™d said, Grayson reacted defensively.

โ€œMy grandfather was the most honorable man I know.โ€

โ€œTell that to Kaylie Rooney,โ€ Sheffieldโ€™s voice was audible again, booming. โ€œWho do you think spoon-fed that story to the press? Who do you think quashed anything the least bit unflattering to his family?โ€

Graysonโ€™s response was garbled. Had he turned away?

โ€œToby Hawthorne was a little punk.โ€ That was Sheffield again. โ€œNo regard for the law, for his own limitations, for anyone but himself.โ€

โ€œAnd Colin wasnโ€™t like that?โ€ Jameson was needling the man. It worked. โ€œColin was going through a rough patch, but he would have come out of

it. I would haveย draggedย him out of it. He had his whole life ahead of him.โ€ Again, the response was garbled.

โ€œThe Rooney girl never even should have been there!โ€ Sheffield exploded. โ€œShe was a criminal. Her parents? Criminals. Cousins, grandparents, aunts, and uncles?ย Criminals.โ€

โ€œBut the fire wasnโ€™t her fault.โ€ Graysonโ€™s voice was louder now, clearer. โ€œYouโ€™ve implied as much already.โ€

โ€œDo you know how much I paid to private detectives to get real answers?โ€ Sheffield snapped. โ€œProbably only a fraction of what your grandfather paid the police to bury their report. The fire on Hawthorne

Island wasnโ€™t an accident. It was arsonโ€”and the person who purchased the accelerant was your uncle Toby.โ€
