Although professional reviews did not entirely determine a gameโs fortunes in 2000, the reviews forย Both Sidesย ranged from mixed to bad:
โFor those of you who have been eagerly awaiting the next release from Mazer/Green, letโs get this out of the way:ย Both Sidesย isย notย a game for fans of the delightfulย Ichigoย series.โ
โSome of the graphics in Myre Landing are among the most beautiful visuals I have ever encountered in a game, but unfortunately, Myre Landing shares space with the maudlin Mapletown.โ
โWhile I enjoyed aspects of my play, the game is twice as long as it needs to be.โ
โBoth Sidesย suffers from a major identity crisis.โ โIchigoย fans should skip it.โ
โโฆthe game seems schizophrenic, as if it has been designed by two different people, and the play is unsatisfying.โ
โThe weather in Myre Landing is the best character in it.โ โThe gameโs ending is twice as clever as it needs to be.โ
โWe can all agree that we need more games with female MCs, but I didnโt like either Alice Ma or Rose the Mighty.โ
โIchigoย is so different fromย Both Sidesย that it is hard to believe that the same set of designers made it. Maybeย Ichigoย is more Mazerโs
game, andย Both Sidesย more Greenโs? Mazer, usually the more public of the team, was curiously absent during the promotion, while Sadie Green was definitely front and center. Maybe Mazer knew he had a flop on his hands?โ
โBoth Sidesย thinks itโs blowing your mind, but mainly what it induces is a minor headache.โ
โI guess I was expected to feel emotion at the end ofย Both Sides,ย but the only thing I felt was the strong desire to throw my controller across the room.โ
โThere is so much technically right withย Both Sides. Amazing graphics in the Myre Landing section, a haunting score by Zoe Cadogan, great sound design, a reasonably clever concept. So why did I hate it so much? Because itโs pretentious, itโs boring, and itโs not that fun. Better luck next time, Unfair.โ
During its first week of release,ย Both Sidesย sold approximately one- fifth of the unitsย Ichigoย had sold in its first week. Marx was still optimistic. โItโs a great, special game,โ Marx said, going into Sadieโs office. โMaybe itโll take longer to find its audience?โ
โPeople hate it,โ Sadie said.
โThey donโt hate it. They just donโt understand it. They expectedย Ichigo,ย and marketing and publicity didnโt do a good enough job telling them that it wasnโt going to beย Ichigo,โ Marx said. โAnd I havenโt given up yet. Weโre going to buy more ads. Weโre going to send out more copies to gamers and reviewers. The retailers are still excited about it and you guys. It isnโt over yet.โ
โThey hate it.โ Sadie put her head on her desk. โIโve got a headache.โ Marx bent down, and he lifted Sadieโs chin up. โSadie, this isnโt over.
Believe me.โ
She did not. โIt might be a migraine. I think Iโll go home for the day.โ
โOkay. Take the afternoon. Iโd come with you, but Iโm having lunch with the boys,โ Marx said. The boys were Antonio โAntโ Ruiz and Simon Freeman. While Sadie and Sam had madeย Both Sides,ย Marx had begun expanding Unfairโs producing efforts. The first team heโd brought on was Simon Freeman and Antonio Ruiz, who were both juniors at CalArts. The boysโas Marx called themโwere making a Japanese-style RPG, inspired by their favorite game,ย Persona. The game took place in a high school, and each character could summon alternate versions of themselves through a complicated system of wormholes.ย Love Doppelgรคngers,ย its tentative title, was part romance and part science fiction. โDo you want to come? Sam said he was going to try to join.โ
โNo.โ Sadie took theย Dead Seaย disk from the shelf.ย Dead Seaย was her comfort game. She decided sheโd go back to her apartment and kill zombies for a while.
Sadie left the office and walked home to Clownerina, who now seemed to be mocking her with his foot that wouldnโt kick. She drew the curtains, and she got into bed, without taking off her clothes or her shoes. She felt ashamed and foolish. She felt covered in failure and she felt sure that people could smell and see it on her. The failure was like a fine coating of ash, after a fire. But it wasnโt only on her skin; it was in her nose, in her mouth, in her lungs, in her molecules becoming part of her. She would never be rid of it.
Dov called her and she let it go to voicemail: โCritics are vile,โ he said. โThe gameโs brilliant. The atmospheric effects on Oneiric areย fuckingย great. Hope youโre doing okay. Call me.โ Sadie listened to the message, and then she hit delete.
Sam called her, and she let that go to voicemail, too: โSadie, pick up.
We need to discuss this. This isnโt just happening to you.โ
Delete.
Sadie fell asleep. About fifteen minutes later, someone was knocking on her apartment door. She could hear Samโs muffled voice.
โSadie, let me in. We have to talk,โ Sam said. Sadie didnโt answer.
โSadie, come on. This is stupid. Talk to me. They mostly hatedย my side,
notย your side.โ
Sadie still didnโt answer.
โSadie, please. This is ridiculous. How long is this going to go on?โ Sadie got out of bed. She swung her front door open, and Sam walked
in.
