Chapter no 30

The Hawthorne Legacy (The Inheritance Games, 2)

It took me longer than it should have to piece together that when Rebecca had said earlier in the week that Emilyโ€™s birthday was Fridayโ€”todayโ€”she hadnโ€™t been lying. Neither had Thea when sheโ€™d said that there was a memorial fundraiser.

Theย sameย fundraiser that Alisa was planning that I would attend.

โ€œI booked you a session with Landon for this afternoon. She had limited availability, so we may have to double up with hair and makeup.โ€

I buckled my seat belt and narrowed my eyes at Alisa as Eli settled into the front passenger seat. โ€œYou failed to mention that tonightโ€™s memorial was for Emily Laughlin.โ€

โ€œDid I?โ€ Alisa didnโ€™t sound even the least bit guilty. โ€œCountry Day is building a new chapel in her honor.โ€

I heard a cough from the driverโ€™s seat and realized that Oren wasnโ€™t the one driving. This man had lighter, longer hair. Iโ€™d almost gotten used to Eli shadowing me at school, but this was the first time since the will had been read that Oren had willingly let me out of his sight while I was in transit. โ€œWhereโ€™s Oren?โ€ I asked.

โ€œOtherwise occupied,โ€ the driver replied. โ€œThere was a situation.โ€ โ€œWhat kind of situation?โ€ I pressed. No response. I looked at Alisa, but

she just shrugged and redirected the conversation.

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t happen to know why Jameson and Grayson took one of your jets, would you?โ€

Back at Hawthorne House, we found Oren waiting at the door with the

situationย heโ€™d been dealing with.

โ€œMax?โ€ I was stunned to see her. We hadnโ€™t been together in person in more than a year, but there Max was, her black hair tied up in messy buns on either side of her head.

She beamed at me, then shot the worldโ€™s most aggrieved look in Orenโ€™s direction. โ€œFinally! Avery, will you tell Monsieur Bodyguard over here that Iโ€™m not a security risk?โ€

My shock started to wear off. โ€œMax!โ€ I took a step toward her, and that was all Max needed to launch herself at me. She hugged me. Hard. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I asked.

She shrugged. โ€œI told you that I was considering a mission trip. I am here to bring the love of God to these poor, backward billionaires. Itโ€™s an ugly job, but someoneโ€™s got to do it.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s joking,โ€ I told Oren. โ€œProbably.โ€ I studied Max a little more closely. As glad as I was to see her, I also knew her parents wouldnโ€™t have approved this trip. She was already on thin ice with them.

And that was when I realized: โ€œTodayโ€™s your birthday, too.โ€

โ€œToo?โ€ For a split second, I saw raw emotion behind Maxโ€™s eyes, but then she shook it off. โ€œIโ€™m eighteen.โ€ Max was legally an adult. Had her parents kicked her out, or had she left on her own? โ€œGot a spare bedroom?โ€ she asked me, all bravado.

I squeezed her hand. โ€œI probably have forty.โ€

Max offered me her brashest, most invincible Maxine Liu smile. โ€œSo what does a girl have to do around here to get a tour?โ€

Ten minutes into Maxโ€™s tour, my phone rang. I looked down at the screen. โ€œJameson,โ€ I reported.

Max gave me a look. โ€œDonโ€™t mind me.โ€ She beamed. โ€œPretend Iโ€™m not even here.โ€

I answered the call. โ€œWhatโ€™s going on? Is everything okay?โ€

โ€œOther than the fact that my stick-in-the-mud brother utterly refuses to play Drink or Dare while we wait?โ€ Jameson had a way of making everything sound like a jokeโ€”and dark humor at that. โ€œThings are just peachy.โ€

โ€œDrink or Dare?โ€ I asked. โ€œNoโ€”donโ€™t answer that. What exactly are you waiting on?โ€

There was a beat of silence on the other end of the line. โ€œSheffield Grayson has security that rivals ours. Thereโ€™s no getting near the man unless he wants you to.โ€

The muscles in my chest tightened. โ€œAnd he doesnโ€™t want Grayson near him.โ€ I ached, just thinking about that. โ€œIs he okay?โ€

Jameson did not answer that question. โ€œGrayson has business cardsโ€” and yes, I mocked him mercilessly for that. He wrote our hotel information on the back of one and left it with the guard at the gate to the Grayson estate.โ€

The less serious Jameson sounded, the more I ached for him, too. โ€œAnd so you wait,โ€ I said quietly.

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. โ€œAnd so we wait.โ€

There was a heaviness in Jamesonโ€™s tone. The fact that heโ€™d let me hear it was shocking.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Heiress.โ€ Jameson fell back into banter. โ€œIย willย prevail on the Drink or Dare front if we have to wait around much longer.โ€

When I hung up the phone, Max practically pounced on me. โ€œWhat did he say?โ€

โ€œSo the boys you want to fax took your private jet to Arizona in hopes that the mystery father of one of said boys knows something about a tragic and deadly fire, lo these many years ago.โ€

โ€œThat about covers it,โ€ I told Max. โ€œExcept I donโ€™t want to fax anyone.โ€ โ€œOnly in your mind and only with your eyes,โ€ Max said solemnly.

โ€œMax!โ€ I said, and then I turned the tables on her. โ€œYou want to tell me what youโ€™re doing here? We both know youโ€™re not okay.โ€

Max looked up at the twenty-foot ceiling. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m not. But Iย amย standing in the middle of a bowling alleyย in your house. This place is unbelievable!โ€

If she wanted a distraction, sheโ€™d come to the right place.

โ€œNow, is there anything else about the Bonkers Life of Billionaire Avery

that you left out?โ€

I knew better than to press her if she didnโ€™t want to talk. โ€œThere is one more thing,โ€ I said. โ€œRemember Emily?โ€

โ€œDied and left a thousand broken pieces in her wake?โ€ Max said immediately. โ€œLoss reverberates through all the players in her tragedy to this day? Yes, I remember Emily.โ€

โ€œTonight, Iโ€™m going to a fundraiser in her honor.โ€
