It took me longer than it should have to piece together that when Rebecca had said earlier in the week that Emilyโs birthday was Fridayโtodayโshe hadnโt been lying. Neither had Thea when sheโd said that there was a memorial fundraiser.
Theย sameย fundraiser that Alisa was planning that I would attend.
โI booked you a session with Landon for this afternoon. She had limited availability, so we may have to double up with hair and makeup.โ
I buckled my seat belt and narrowed my eyes at Alisa as Eli settled into the front passenger seat. โYou failed to mention that tonightโs memorial was for Emily Laughlin.โ
โDid I?โ Alisa didnโt sound even the least bit guilty. โCountry Day is building a new chapel in her honor.โ
I heard a cough from the driverโs seat and realized that Oren wasnโt the one driving. This man had lighter, longer hair. Iโd almost gotten used to Eli shadowing me at school, but this was the first time since the will had been read that Oren had willingly let me out of his sight while I was in transit. โWhereโs Oren?โ I asked.
โOtherwise occupied,โ the driver replied. โThere was a situation.โ โWhat kind of situation?โ I pressed. No response. I looked at Alisa, but
she just shrugged and redirected the conversation.
โYou wouldnโt happen to know why Jameson and Grayson took one of your jets, would you?โ
Back at Hawthorne House, we found Oren waiting at the door with the
situationย heโd been dealing with.
โMax?โ I was stunned to see her. We hadnโt been together in person in more than a year, but there Max was, her black hair tied up in messy buns on either side of her head.
She beamed at me, then shot the worldโs most aggrieved look in Orenโs direction. โFinally! Avery, will you tell Monsieur Bodyguard over here that Iโm not a security risk?โ
My shock started to wear off. โMax!โ I took a step toward her, and that was all Max needed to launch herself at me. She hugged me. Hard. โWhat are you doing here?โ I asked.
She shrugged. โI told you that I was considering a mission trip. I am here to bring the love of God to these poor, backward billionaires. Itโs an ugly job, but someoneโs got to do it.โ
โSheโs joking,โ I told Oren. โProbably.โ I studied Max a little more closely. As glad as I was to see her, I also knew her parents wouldnโt have approved this trip. She was already on thin ice with them.
And that was when I realized: โTodayโs your birthday, too.โ
โToo?โ For a split second, I saw raw emotion behind Maxโs eyes, but then she shook it off. โIโm eighteen.โ Max was legally an adult. Had her parents kicked her out, or had she left on her own? โGot a spare bedroom?โ she asked me, all bravado.
I squeezed her hand. โI probably have forty.โ
Max offered me her brashest, most invincible Maxine Liu smile. โSo what does a girl have to do around here to get a tour?โ
Ten minutes into Maxโs tour, my phone rang. I looked down at the screen. โJameson,โ I reported.
Max gave me a look. โDonโt mind me.โ She beamed. โPretend Iโm not even here.โ
I answered the call. โWhatโs going on? Is everything okay?โ
โOther than the fact that my stick-in-the-mud brother utterly refuses to play Drink or Dare while we wait?โ Jameson had a way of making everything sound like a jokeโand dark humor at that. โThings are just peachy.โ
โDrink or Dare?โ I asked. โNoโdonโt answer that. What exactly are you waiting on?โ
There was a beat of silence on the other end of the line. โSheffield Grayson has security that rivals ours. Thereโs no getting near the man unless he wants you to.โ
The muscles in my chest tightened. โAnd he doesnโt want Grayson near him.โ I ached, just thinking about that. โIs he okay?โ
Jameson did not answer that question. โGrayson has business cardsโ and yes, I mocked him mercilessly for that. He wrote our hotel information on the back of one and left it with the guard at the gate to the Grayson estate.โ
The less serious Jameson sounded, the more I ached for him, too. โAnd so you wait,โ I said quietly.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the line. โAnd so we wait.โ
There was a heaviness in Jamesonโs tone. The fact that heโd let me hear it was shocking.
โDonโt worry, Heiress.โ Jameson fell back into banter. โIย willย prevail on the Drink or Dare front if we have to wait around much longer.โ
When I hung up the phone, Max practically pounced on me. โWhat did he say?โ
โSo the boys you want to fax took your private jet to Arizona in hopes that the mystery father of one of said boys knows something about a tragic and deadly fire, lo these many years ago.โ
โThat about covers it,โ I told Max. โExcept I donโt want to fax anyone.โ โOnly in your mind and only with your eyes,โ Max said solemnly.
โMax!โ I said, and then I turned the tables on her. โYou want to tell me what youโre doing here? We both know youโre not okay.โ
Max looked up at the twenty-foot ceiling. โMaybe Iโm not. But Iย amย standing in the middle of a bowling alleyย in your house. This place is unbelievable!โ
If she wanted a distraction, sheโd come to the right place.
โNow, is there anything else about the Bonkers Life of Billionaire Avery
that you left out?โ
I knew better than to press her if she didnโt want to talk. โThere is one more thing,โ I said. โRemember Emily?โ
โDied and left a thousand broken pieces in her wake?โ Max said immediately. โLoss reverberates through all the players in her tragedy to this day? Yes, I remember Emily.โ
โTonight, Iโm going to a fundraiser in her honor.โ
