Chapter no 118 – โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒTake Your Seats, Everyoneโ€Œ

Wonder

Jack and I walked right behind a couple of sixth graders into the building, and then followed them to the auditorium.

Mrs. G was at the entrance, handing out the programs and telling kids where to go.

โ€œFifth graders down the aisle to the left,โ€ she said. โ€œSixth graders go to the right. Everyone come in. Come in. Good morning. Go to your staging areas. Fifth graders to the left, sixth grade to the right โ€ฆโ€

The auditorium was huge inside. Big sparkly chandeliers. Red velvet walls. Rows and rows and rows of cushioned seats leading up to the giant stage. We walked down the wide aisle and followed the signs to the fifth-grade staging area, which was in a big room to the left of the stage. Inside were four rows of folding chairs facing the front of the room, which is where Ms. Rubin was standing, waving us in as soon as we walked in the room.

โ€œOkay, kids, take your seats. Take your seats,โ€ she was saying, pointing to the rows of chairs. โ€œDonโ€™t forget, youโ€™re sitting alphabetically. Come on, everybody, take your seats.โ€ Not too many kids had arrived yet, though, and the ones who had werenโ€™t listening to her. Me and Jack were sword-fighting with our rolled-up programs.

โ€œHey, guys.โ€

It was Summer walking over to us. She was wearing a light pink dress and, I think, a little makeup.

โ€œWow, Summer, you look awesome,โ€ I told her, because she really did.

โ€œReally? Thanks, you do, too, Auggie.โ€

โ€œYeah, you look okay, Summer,โ€ said Jack, kind of matter-of-factly.

And for the first time, I realized that Jack had a crush on her. โ€œThis is so exciting, isnโ€™t it?โ€ said Summer.

โ€œYeah, kind of,โ€ I answered, nodding.

โ€œOh man, look at this program,โ€ said Jack, scratching his forehead. โ€œWeโ€™re going to be here all freakinโ€™ day.โ€

I looked at my program.

Roll Call of Names

โ€œWhy do you think that?โ€ I asked.

โ€œBecause Mr. Jansenโ€™s speeches go on forever,โ€ said Jack. โ€œHeโ€™s even worse than Tushman!โ€

โ€œMy mom said she actually dozed off when he spoke last year,โ€ Summer added.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the awards presentation?โ€ I asked.

โ€œThatโ€™s where they give medals to the biggest brainiacs,โ€ Jack answered. โ€œWhich would mean Charlotte and Ximena will win everything in the fifth grade, like they won everything in the fourth grade and in the third grade.โ€

โ€œNot in the second grade?โ€ I laughed.

โ€œThey didnโ€™t give those awards out in the second grade,โ€ he answered.

โ€œMaybeย youโ€™llย win this year,โ€ I joked.

โ€œNot unless they give awards for the most Cs!โ€ he laughed. โ€œEverybody, take your seats!โ€ Ms. Rubin started yelling louder now,

like she was getting annoyed that nobody was listening. โ€œWe have a lot to get through, so take your seats. Donโ€™t forget youโ€™re sitting in alphabetical order! A through G is the first row! H through N is the second row; O through Q is the third row; R through Z is the last row. Letโ€™s go, people.โ€

โ€œWe should go sit down,โ€ said Summer, walking toward the front section.

โ€œYou guys are definitely coming over my house after this, right?โ€ I called out after her.

โ€œDefinitely!โ€ she said, taking her seat next to Ximena Chin. โ€œWhen did Summer get so hot?โ€ Jack muttered in my ear.

โ€œShut up, dude,โ€ I said, laughing as we headed toward the third row.

โ€œSeriously, when did that happen?โ€ he whispered, taking the seat next to mine.

โ€œMr. Will!โ€ Ms. Rubin shouted. โ€œLast time I checked,ย Wย came betweenย Rย andย Z, yes?โ€

Jack looked at her blankly.

โ€œDude, youโ€™re in the wrong row!โ€ I said.

โ€œI am?โ€ And the face he made as he got up to leave, which was a mixture of looking completely confused and looking like heโ€™s just played a joke on someone, totally cracked me up.
