Mom helped me pack the night before the big trip. We put all the clothes I was taking on my bed, and she folded everything neatly and put it inside the bag while I watched. It was a plain blue rolling duffel, by the way: no logos or artwork.
โWhat if I canโt sleep at night?โ I asked.
โTake a book with you. Then if you canโt sleep, you can pull out your flashlight, and read for a bit until you get sleepy,โ she answered.
I nodded. โWhat if I have a nightmare?โ
โYour teachers will be there, sweetie,โ she said. โAnd Jack. And your friends.โ
โI can bring Baboo,โ I said. That was my favorite stuffed animal when I was little. A small black bear with a soft black nose.
โYou donโt really sleep with him anymore, do you?โ said Mom.
โNo, but I keep him in my closet in case I wake up in the middle of the night and canโt get back to sleep,โ I said. โI could hide him in my bag. No one would know.โ
โThen letโs do that.โ Mom nodded, getting Baboo from inside my closet.
โI wish they allowed cell phones,โ I said.
โI know, me too!โ she said. โThough I know youโre going to have a great time, Auggie. You sure you want me to pack Baboo?โ
โYeah, but way down where no one can see him,โ I said.
She stuck Baboo deep inside the bag and then stuffed the last of my T-shirts on top of him. โSo many clothes for just two days!โ
โThree days and two nights,โ I corrected her.
โYep.โ She nodded, smiling. โThree days and two nights.โ She zipped up the duffel bag and picked it up. โNot too heavy. Try it.โ
I picked up the bag. โFine.โ I shrugged.
She sat on the bed. โHey, what happened to yourย Empire Strikes Backย poster?โ
โOh, I took that down ages ago,โ I answered.
She shook her head. โHuh, I didnโt notice that before.โ
โIโm trying to, you know, change my image a bit,โ I explained. โOkay.โ She smiled, nodding like she understood. โAnyway, honey,
you have to promise me you wonโt forget to put on the bug spray, okay? On the legs, especially when youโre hiking through the woods. Itโs right here in the front compartment.โ
โUh-huh.โ
โAnd put on your sunscreen,โ she said. โYou do not want to get a sunburn. And donโt, I repeat, doย notย forget to take your hearing aids off if you go swimming.โ
โWould I get electrocuted?โ
โNo, but youโd be in real hot water with Daddy because those things cost a fortune!โ she laughed. โI put the rain poncho in the front compartment, too. Same thing goes if it rains, Auggie, okay? Make sure you cover the hearing aids with the hood.โ
โAye, aye, sir,โ I said, saluting. She smiled and pulled me over.
โI canโt believe how much youโve grown up this year, Auggie,โ she said softly, putting her hands on the sides of my face.
โDo I look taller?โ โDefinitely.โ She nodded.
โIโm still the shortest one in my grade.โ
โIโm not really even talking about your height,โ she said. โSuppose I hate it there?โ
โYouโre going to have a great time, Auggie.โ
I nodded. She got up and gave me a quick kiss on the forehead. โOkay, so I say we get to bed now.โ
โItโs only nine oโclock, Mom!โ
โYour bus leaves at six a.m. tomorrow. You donโt want to be late.
Come on. Chop chop. Your teeth are brushed?โ
I nodded and climbed into bed. She started to lie down next to me. โYou donโt need to put me to bed tonight, Mom,โ I said. โIโll read
on my own till I get sleepy.โ
โReally?โ She nodded, impressed. She squeezed my hand and gave it a kiss. โOkay then, goodnight, love. Have sweet dreams.โ
โYou too.โ
She turned on the little reading light beside the bed.
โIโll write you letters,โ I said as she was leaving. โEven though Iโll probably be home before you guys even get them.โ
โThen we can read them together,โ she said, and threw me a kiss. When she left my room, I took my copy ofย The Lion, the Witch and
the Wardrobeย off the night table and started reading until I fell asleep.
โฆ though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation.
