Chapter no 76

The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, 1)

After Grayson left, I spent another fifteen minutes in the galleryโ€”aloneโ€” staring at Cรฉzanneโ€™sย Four Brothersย before Alisa sent someone to find me.

โ€œI agree,โ€ Xander told me, even though I hadnโ€™t said anything for him to agree with. โ€œThis party sucks. The socialite-to-scone ratio is pretty much unforgivable.โ€

I wasnโ€™t in the mood for scone jokes.ย Jameson says he broke up with Emily. Grayson claims that he killed her. Thea is using me to punish them both.ย โ€œIโ€™m out of here,โ€ I told Xander.

โ€œYou canโ€™t leave yet!โ€

I gave him a look. โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€ฆโ€ Xander waggled his lone eyebrow. โ€œThey just opened up the dance floor. You want to give the press something to talk about, donโ€™t you?โ€

One dance. That was all I was giving Alisaโ€”and the photographersโ€” before I got the hell out of here.

โ€œPretend Iโ€™m the most fascinating person youโ€™ve ever met,โ€ Xander advised as he escorted me onto the dance floor for a waltz. He held a hand out for mine, then curved his other arm around my back. โ€œHere, Iโ€™ll help: Every year on my birthday, from the time I was seven until I was twelve, my grandfather gave me money to invest, and I spent it all on cryptocurrency because I am a genius and not at all because I thoughtย cryptocurrencyย sounded kind of cool.โ€ He spun me once. โ€œI sold my holdings before my grandfather died for almost a hundred million dollars.โ€

I stared at him. โ€œYou what?โ€

โ€œSee?โ€ he told me. โ€œFascinating.โ€ Xander kept right on dancing, but he

looked down. โ€œNot even my brothers know.โ€

โ€œWhat did your brothers invest in?โ€ I asked. All this time, Iโ€™d been assuming that theyโ€™d been cut off withย nothing. Nash had told me about Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s birthday tradition, but I hadnโ€™t thought twice about their โ€œinvestments.โ€

โ€œNo idea,โ€ Xander said jauntily. โ€œWe werenโ€™t allowed to discuss it.โ€

We danced on, the photographers snapping their shots. Xander brought his face very close to mine.

โ€œThe press is going to think weโ€™re dating,โ€ I told him, my mind still spinning at his revelation.

โ€œAs it so happens,โ€ Xander replied archly, โ€œI excel at fake dating.โ€ โ€œWho exactly did you fake date?โ€ I asked.

Xander looked past me to Thea. โ€œI am a human Rube Goldberg machine,โ€ he said. โ€œI do simple things in complicated ways.โ€ He paused. โ€œIt was Emilyโ€™s idea for Thea and me to date. Em was, shall we say,ย persistent. She didnโ€™t know that Thea was already with someone.โ€

โ€œAnd you agreed to put on a show?โ€ I asked incredulously.

โ€œI repeat: I am a human Rube Goldberg machine.โ€ His voice softened. โ€œAnd I didnโ€™t do it for Thea.โ€

Then for who?ย It took me a moment to put it together. Xander had mentioned fake datingย twiceย before: once with respect to Thea, and once when Iโ€™d asked him about Rebecca.

โ€œThea and Rebecca?โ€ I said.

โ€œDeeply in love,โ€ Xander confirmed.ย Thea called her painfully beautiful. โ€œThe best friend and the younger sister. What was I supposed to do? They didnโ€™t think Emily would understand. She was possessive of the people she loved, and I knew how hard it was for Rebecca to go against her. Just once, Bex wanted something for herself.โ€

I wondered if Xander had feelings for herโ€”if fake dating Thea had been his twisted, Rube Goldberg way of saying that. โ€œWere Thea and Rebecca right?โ€ I asked. โ€œAbout Emily not understanding?โ€

โ€œAnd then some.โ€ Xander paused. โ€œEm found out about them that night.

She saw it as a betrayal.โ€

That nightโ€”the night she died.

The music came to an end, and Xander dropped my hand, keeping his other arm around my waist. โ€œSmile for the press,โ€ he murmured. โ€œGive

them a story. Look deep into my eyes. Feel the weight of my charm. Think of your favorite baked goods.โ€

The edges of my lips turned up, and Xander Hawthorne escorted me off the dance floor to Alisa. โ€œYou can go now,โ€ she told me, pleased. โ€œIf youโ€™d like.โ€

Hell yes.ย โ€œYou coming?โ€ I asked Xander.

The invitation seemed to surprise him. โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€ He paused. โ€œI solved the Black Wood.โ€ That got my full attention. โ€œI could win this.โ€ Xander looked down at his fancy shoes. โ€œBut Jameson and Grayson need it more. Head back to Hawthorne House. Thereโ€™ll be a helicopter waiting for you when get there. Have the pilot fly you over the Black Wood.โ€

A helicopter?

โ€œWhere you go,โ€ Xander told me, โ€œtheyโ€™ll follow.โ€

They, as in his brothers. โ€œI thought you wanted to win,โ€ I said to Xander. He swallowed. Hard. โ€œI do.โ€
