Iย agreed to sit down with Alisaโs high-priced media consultant. Not because I had any intention of going through with tonightโs charity gala,ย but because it was the one way I knew of to make sure that everyone else left me alone.
โThere are three things weโre going to work on today, Avery.โ The consultant, an elegant Black woman with a posh British accent, had introduced herself as Landon. I had no idea if that was her first name or her last. โAfter the attack this morning, there will be more interest in your story
โand your sisterโsโthan ever.โ
Libby wouldnโt hurt me,ย I thought desperately.ย She wouldnโt let Drake hurt me.ย And then:ย She didnโt block his number.
โThe three things we will be practicing today are what to say, how to say it, and how to identify things you shouldnโt say and demur.โ Landon was poised, precise, and more stylish than either of my stylists. โNow, obviously, there is going to be some interest in the unfortunate incident that took place this morning, but your legal team would prefer you say as little on that front as possible.โ
That frontย being the second attempt on my life in three days.ย Libby isnโt involved. She canโt be.
โRepeat after me,โ Landon instructed, โIโm grateful to be alive, and Iโm grateful to be here tonight.โ
I blocked out the thoughts dogging me, as much as I could. โIโm grateful to be alive,โ I repeated stonily, โand Iโm grateful to be here tonight.โ
Landon gave me a look. โHow do you think you sound?โ โPissed?โ I guessed dourly.
Landon offered me a gentle suggestion. โPerhaps try sounding less pissed.โ She waited a moment, and then assessed the way I was sitting. โOpen up your shoulders. Loosen those muscles. Your posture is the first
thing the audienceโs brain is going to latch on to. If you look like youโre trying to fold in on yourself, if you make yourself small, that sends a message.โ
With a roll of my eyes, I tried to sit up a little straighter and let my hands fall to my sides. โIโm grateful to be alive, and Iโm grateful to be here tonight.โ
โNo.โ Landon gave a shake of her head. โYou want to sound like a real person.โ
โI am a real person.โ
โNot to the rest of the world. Not yet. Right now youโre a spectacle.โ There was nothing unkind in Landonโs tone. โPretend youโre back home. Youโre in your comfort zone.โ
What was my comfort zone? Talking to Max, who was MIA for the foreseeable future? Crawling into bed with Libby?
โThink of someone you trust.โ
That hurt in a way that should have hollowed me out but left me feeling like I might throw up instead. I swallowed. โIโm grateful to be alive, and Iโm grateful to be here tonight.โ
โIt seems forced, Avery.โ
I ground my teeth. โItย isย forced.โ
โDoes it have to be?โ Landon let me marinate in that question for a moment. โIs no part of you grateful to have been given this opportunity? To live in this house? To know that no matter what happens, you and the people you love will always be taken care of?โ
Money was security. It was safety. It was knowing that you could screw up without screwing up your life.ย If Libby did let Drake onto the estate, if heโs the one who shot at meโshe couldnโt have known thatโs what was going to happen.
โArenโt you grateful to be alive, after everything thatโs happened? Did youย wantย to die today?โ
No.ย I wanted to live. Really live.
โIโm grateful to be here,โ I said, feeling the words a little more this time, โand Iโm grateful to be alive.โ
โBetter, but this timeโฆ let it hurt.โ โExcuse me?โ
โShow them that youโre vulnerable.โ
I wrinkled my nose at her.
โShow them that youโre just an ordinary girl. Just like them. Thatโs the trick of my trade: How real, how vulnerable, can you seem without letting yourself actually be vulnerable at all?โ
Vulnerableย wasnโt the story Iโd chosen to tell when theyโd been designing my wardrobe. I was supposed to have an edge. But sharp-edged girls had feelings, too.
โIโm grateful to be alive,โ I said, โand Iโm grateful to be here tonight.โ โGood.โ Landon gave a little nod. โNow weโre going to play a little
game. Iโm going to ask you questions, and youโre going to do the one thing you absolutely must master before I let you out of here to go to the gala tonight.โ
โWhatโs that?โ I asked.
โYouโreย notย going to answer the questions.โ Landonโs expression was intent. โNot with words. Not with your face. Not at allโunless and until you get a question that you can, in some way, answer with the key message weโve already practiced.โ
โGratitude,โ I said. โEt cetera, et cetera.โ I shrugged. โDoesnโt sound hard.โ
โAvery, is it true that your mother had a long-standing sexual liaison with Tobias Hawthorne?โ
She almost got me. I almost spat out the wordย no. But somehow, I refrained.
โDid you stage todayโs attack?โ
What?
โWatch your face,โ she told me, and then, without losing a beat: โHow is your relationship with the Hawthorne family?โ
I sat, passive, not allowing myself to so much as think their names. โWhat are you going to do with the money? How do you respond to the
people calling you a con woman and a thief? Were you injured today?โ
That last question gave me an opening. โIโm fine,โ I said. โIโm grateful to be alive, and Iโm grateful to be here tonight.โ
I expected accolades but got none.
โIs it true that your sister is in a relationship with the man who tried to kill you? Is she involved with the attempt on your life?โ
I wasnโt sure if it was the way sheโd snuck the questions in, right after
my previous answer, or how close to the quick the question cut, but I snapped.
โNo.โย The word burst from my mouth. โMy sister hadย nothingย to do with this.โ
Landon gave me a look. โFrom the top,โ she said steadily. โLetโs try again.โ
