These were the facts: Drake had tried to run my car off the road. He had a weapon that was a likely match for the bullets Oren had recovered. He had a felony record.
The police took my statement. They asked questions about the shooting. About Drake. About Libby. Eventually, I was escorted back to Hawthorne House.
The front door flew open before Alisa and I had even made it to the porch.
Nash stormed out of the house, then slowed when he saw us. โYou want to tell me why Iโm just now getting word that the police hauled Libby out of here?โ he asked Alisa.
Iโd never heard a Southern drawl sound quite like that.
Alisa lifted her chin. โIf sheโs not under arrest, she had no obligation to go with them.โ
โShe doesnโt know that!โ Nash boomed. Then he lowered his voice and looked her in the eye. โIf youโd wanted to protect her, you could have.โ
There were so many layers to that sentence, I couldnโt begin to untangle them, not with my brain focused on other things.ย Libby. The police have Libby.
โIโm not in the business of protecting every sad story that comes along,โ Alisa told Nash.
I knew she wasnโtย justย talking about Libby, but that didnโt matter. โSheโs not a sad story,โ I gritted out. โSheโs my sister!โ
โAnd, more likely than not, an accessory to attempted murder.โ Alisa reached out to touch my shoulder. I stepped back.
Libby wouldnโt hurt me. She wouldnโt let anyone hurt me.ย I believed that, but I couldnโt say it. Why couldnโt I say it?
โThat bastardโs been texting her,โ Nash said beside me. โIโve been trying
to get her to block him, but she feels so damn guiltyโโ
โFor what?โ Alisa pushed. โWhat does she feel guilty for? If sheโs got nothing to hide from the police, then why are you so concerned about her talking to them?โ
Nashโs eyes flashed. โYouโre really going to stand there and act like we werenโt both raised to treat โnever talk to the authorities without a lawyer presentโ like a Commandment?โ
I thought about Libby, alone in a cell. She probably wasnโt evenย inย a cell, but I couldnโt shake the image. โSend someone,โ I told Alisa shakily. โFrom the firm.โ She opened her mouth to object, and I cut her off.ย โDo it.โ
I might not hold the purse strings now, but I would someday. She worked for me.
โConsider it done,โ Alisa said.
โAnd leave me alone,โ I told her fiercely. She and Oren had kept me in the dark. Theyโd moved me around like a chess piece on a board. โAll of you,โ I said, turning back toward Oren.
I needed to be alone. I needed to do everything in my power to keep them from planting even a seed of doubt, because if I couldnโt trust Libbyโฆ
I had no one.
Nash cleared his throat. โYou want to tell her about the media consultant waiting in the sitting room, Lee-Lee, or should I?โ
