The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, 1)

These were the facts: Drake had tried to run my car off the road. He had a weapon that was a likely match for the bullets Oren had recovered. He had a felony record.

The police took my statement. They asked questions about the shooting. About Drake. About Libby. Eventually, I was escorted back to Hawthorne House.

The front door flew open before Alisa and I had even made it to the porch.

Nash stormed out of the house, then slowed when he saw us. โ€œYou want to tell me why Iโ€™m just now getting word that the police hauled Libby out of here?โ€ he asked Alisa.

Iโ€™d never heard a Southern drawl sound quite like that.

Alisa lifted her chin. โ€œIf sheโ€™s not under arrest, she had no obligation to go with them.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t know that!โ€ Nash boomed. Then he lowered his voice and looked her in the eye. โ€œIf youโ€™d wanted to protect her, you could have.โ€

There were so many layers to that sentence, I couldnโ€™t begin to untangle them, not with my brain focused on other things.ย Libby. The police have Libby.

โ€œIโ€™m not in the business of protecting every sad story that comes along,โ€ Alisa told Nash.

I knew she wasnโ€™tย justย talking about Libby, but that didnโ€™t matter. โ€œSheโ€™s not a sad story,โ€ I gritted out. โ€œSheโ€™s my sister!โ€

โ€œAnd, more likely than not, an accessory to attempted murder.โ€ Alisa reached out to touch my shoulder. I stepped back.

Libby wouldnโ€™t hurt me. She wouldnโ€™t let anyone hurt me.ย I believed that, but I couldnโ€™t say it. Why couldnโ€™t I say it?

โ€œThat bastardโ€™s been texting her,โ€ Nash said beside me. โ€œIโ€™ve been trying

to get her to block him, but she feels so damn guiltyโ€”โ€

โ€œFor what?โ€ Alisa pushed. โ€œWhat does she feel guilty for? If sheโ€™s got nothing to hide from the police, then why are you so concerned about her talking to them?โ€

Nashโ€™s eyes flashed. โ€œYouโ€™re really going to stand there and act like we werenโ€™t both raised to treat โ€˜never talk to the authorities without a lawyer presentโ€™ like a Commandment?โ€

I thought about Libby, alone in a cell. She probably wasnโ€™t evenย inย a cell, but I couldnโ€™t shake the image. โ€œSend someone,โ€ I told Alisa shakily. โ€œFrom the firm.โ€ She opened her mouth to object, and I cut her off.ย โ€œDo it.โ€

I might not hold the purse strings now, but I would someday. She worked for me.

โ€œConsider it done,โ€ Alisa said.

โ€œAnd leave me alone,โ€ I told her fiercely. She and Oren had kept me in the dark. Theyโ€™d moved me around like a chess piece on a board. โ€œAll of you,โ€ I said, turning back toward Oren.

I needed to be alone. I needed to do everything in my power to keep them from planting even a seed of doubt, because if I couldnโ€™t trust Libbyโ€ฆ

I had no one.

Nash cleared his throat. โ€œYou want to tell her about the media consultant waiting in the sitting room, Lee-Lee, or should I?โ€
