Eight. One. One.
I slept in Libbyโs room again that night. She didnโt. I asked Oren to confirm with her security team that she was okay and on the premises.
She wasโbut he didnโt tell me where.
No Libby. No Max.ย I was aloneโmore alone than Iโd been since I got here.ย No Jameson.ย I hadnโt seen him since heโd left that morning.ย No Grayson.ย He hadnโt lingered with me for long after weโd discovered the clue.
One. One. Eight.ย That was all I had to concentrate on. Three numbers, which confirmed for me that Tobyโs tree in the Black Wood had just been a tree. If there was a fourth number, it was still out there. Based on the keychain, the clue in the Black Wood could appear in any format, not just a carving.
Late into the night and nearly asleep, I heard something like footsteps.ย Behind me? Below?ย The wind whistled outside my window. Gunshots lurked in my memory. I had no idea what was lurking in the walls.
I didnโt fall asleep until dawn. When I did, I dreamed about sleeping.
โI have a secret,โ my mom says, cheerfully bouncing onto my bed, jarring me awake. โCare to make a guess, my newly fifteen-year-old daughter?โ
โIโm not playing,โ I grumble, pulling the covers back over my head. โI never guess right.โ
โIโll give you a hint,โ my mom wheedles. โFor your birthday.โ She pulls the covers back and flops down beside me on my pillow. Her smile is contagious.
I finally break and smile back. โFine. Give me a hint.โ โI have a secretโฆ about the day you were born.โ
I woke with a headache to my lawyer throwing open the plantation
shutters. โRise and shine,โ Alisa said, with the force and surety of a person making an argument in court.
โGo away.โ Channeling my younger self, I pulled the covers over my head.
โMy apologies,โ Alisa said, not sounding apologetic in the least. โBut you really do have to get up now.โ
โI donโt have to do anything,โ I muttered. โIโm a billionaire.โ
That worked about as well as I expected it to. โIf youโll recall,โ Alisa replied pleasantly, โin an attempt to do damage control after your impromptu press conference earlier this week, I arranged for your debut in Texas society to take place this weekend. There is a charity benefit that you will be attending this evening.โ
โI barely slept last night.โ I tried for pity. โSomeone tried to shoot me!โ โWeโll get you some vitamin C and a pain pill.โ Alisa was without
mercy. โIโm taking you dress shopping in half an hour. You have media training at one, hair and makeup at four.โ
โMaybe we should reschedule,โ I said. โDue to someone wanting to kill me.โ
โOren signed off on us leaving the estate.โ Alisa gave me a look. โYou have twenty-nine minutes.โ She eyed my hair. โMake sure youโre looking your best. Iโll meet you at the car.โ
