Oren met me at the car with a cup of coffee. He didnโ€™t say a word about my little adventure with Jameson the night before, and I didnโ€™t ask how much heโ€™d observed. As he opened the car door, Oren leaned toward me. โ€œDonโ€™t say I didnโ€™t warn you.โ€

I had no idea what he was talking about, until I realized that Alisa was sitting in the front seat. โ€œYouโ€™re looking sedate this morning,โ€ she commented.

I tookย sedateย to meanย moderately less rash and therefore less likely to evoke a tabloid scandal. I wondered how she would have described the scene Iโ€™d stumbled across in Libbyโ€™s room.

This is so not good.

โ€œI hope you donโ€™t have plans for this weekend, Avery,โ€ Alisa said as Oren put the car in drive. โ€œOr the next weekend.โ€ Neither Jameson nor Xander had joined us, which meant that I had absolutely no buffer, and clearly, Alisa was royally pissed.

My lawyer canโ€™t ground me, can she?ย I thought.

โ€œI was hoping to keep you out of the limelight a bit longer,โ€ Alisa continued pointedly, โ€œbut since that plan has gone by the wayside, youโ€™ll be attending a pink ribbon fund raiser this Saturday night and a game next Sunday.โ€

โ€œA game?โ€ I repeated.

โ€œNFL,โ€ she said curtly. โ€œYou own the team. My hope is that scheduling some high-profile social outings will provide enough grist for the gossip mill that we can delay setting up your first sit-down interview until after weโ€™ve gotten you some real media training.โ€

I was still trying to absorb the NFL bombshell when the wordsย media trainingย put a knot of dread in my throat.

โ€œDo I have toโ€”โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Alisa told me. โ€œYes to the gala this weekend, yes to the game next weekend, yes to the media training.โ€

I didnโ€™t say another word in complaint. Iโ€™d stoked this fireโ€”and protected Libbyโ€”knowing that, sooner or later, Iโ€™d have to pay the piper.

I got so many stares when we arrived at school that I found myself questioning whether Iโ€™d dreamed my last two days at Heights Country Day. This was what Iโ€™d expected, back on day one. Just like then, Thea was the first to make a move toward me.

โ€œYou did a thing,โ€ she said in a tone that highly suggested what Iโ€™d done was both naughty and delicious. Inexplicably, my mind went to Jameson, to the moment on the bridge when his fingers had woven their way between mine.

โ€œDo you really know why Tobias Hawthorne left you everything?โ€ Thea asked, her eyes alight. โ€œThe whole schoolโ€™s talking about it.โ€

โ€œThe whole school can talk about whatever they want.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t like me much,โ€ Thea noted. โ€œThatโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m a hypercompetitive, bisexual perfectionist who likes to win and looks likeย this. Iโ€™m no stranger to being hated.โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œI donโ€™t hate you.โ€ I didnโ€™t know her well enough to hate her yet.

โ€œThatโ€™s good,โ€ Thea replied with a self-satisfied smile, โ€œbecause weโ€™re going to be spending a lot more time with each other. My parents are going out of town. They seem to believe that, left to my own devices, I might do something ill-advised, so Iโ€™ll be staying with my uncle, and I understand that he and Zara have taken up residence at Hawthorne House. I guess theyโ€™re not quite ready to cede the family homestead to a stranger.โ€

Zara had been playing niceโ€”or at leastย nicer. But Iโ€™d had no idea that sheโ€™d moved in. Then again, Hawthorne House was so gargantuan that an entire professional baseball team could be living there and I might have no idea.

For all I knew, I mightย ownย a professional baseball team.

โ€œWhy would you want to stay at Hawthorne House?โ€ I asked Thea. She was the one whoโ€™d warned me away.

โ€œContrary to popular belief, I donโ€™t always do what I want.โ€ Thea tossed her dark hair over her shoulder. โ€œAnd besides, Emily was my best friend. After everything that happened last year, when it comes to the charms of Hawthorne brothers, Iโ€™m immune.โ€
