How many libraries did this place have? That was what I focused on as I walked away from Jamesonโnot the feel of his body too close to mine, not the fact that Thea hadnโt been lying when sheโd said that there was a girl or that sheโd died.
Emily.ย I tried and failed to banish the whisper in my mind.ย Her name was Emily.ย I reached the main staircase and hesitated. If I went back to my wing now, if I tried to sleep, all I would do was replay my conversation with Jameson, again and again. I glanced back over my shoulder to see if heโd followed meโand saw Oren instead.
My head of security had told me I was safe here. He seemed to believe it. But still, he trailed meโinvisible until he wanted to be seen.
โTurning in for the night?โ Oren asked me.
โNo.โ There was no way I could sleep, no way I could even close my eyesโso I explored. Down one long hall, I found a theater. Not a movie theater, but something closer to an opera house. The walls were golden. A red velvet curtain obscured what had to be a stage. The seats were on an incline. The ceiling arced, and when I flipped a switch, hundreds of tiny lights came to life along that arc.
I remembered Dr. Mac telling me about the Hawthorne Foundationโs support of the arts.
The next room over was filled with musical instrumentsโdozens of them. I bent to look at a violin with anย Sย carved to one side of the strings, its mirror image on the other.
โThatโs a Stradivarius.โ Those words were issued like a threat.
I turned to see Grayson standing in the doorway. I wondered if heโd been following usโand for how long. He stared at me, his pupils black and fathomless, the irises around them ice gray. โYou should be careful, Ms. Grambs.โ
โIโm not going to break anything,โ I said, stepping back from the violin. โYou should be careful,โ Grayson reiterated, his voice soft but deadly,
โwith Jameson. The last thing my brother needs is you and whatever this is.โ
I glanced at Oren, but his face was impassive, like he couldnโt hear anything that passed between us.ย Itโs not his job to eavesdrop. Itโs his job to protect meโand he doesnโt see Grayson as a threat.
โThisย being me?โ I shot back. โOr the terms of your grandfatherโs will?โ I wasnโt the one whoโd upended their lives. But I was here, and Tobias Hawthorne wasnโt. Logically, I knew that my best option was to avoid confrontation, avoidย himย altogether. This was a big house.
Standing this close to Grayson, it didnโt feel nearly big enough.
โMy mother hasnโt left her room in days.โ Grayson stared at and into me. โXander nearly blew himself up today. Jameson is one bad idea away from ruining his life, and none of us can leave the estate without being hounded by the press. The property damage theyโve caused aloneโฆโ
Say nothing. Turn away. Donโt engage.ย โDo you think this is easy for me?โ I asked instead. โDo you think I want to be stalked by the paparazzi?โ โYou want the money.โ Grayson Hawthorne looked down at me from on
high. โHow could you not, growing up the way you did?โ
That was just dripping with condescension. โLike youย donโtย want the money?โ I retorted. โGrowing up the wayย youย did? Maybe I havenโt had everything handed to me my entire life, butโโ
โYou have no idea,โ Grayson said lowly, โhow ill prepared you are. A girl like you?โ
โYou donโt know me.โ A rush of fury surged through my veins as I cut him off.
โI will,โ Grayson promised. โIโll know everything about you soon enough.โ Every bone in my body said that he was a person who kept his promises. โMy access to funds might be somewhat limited currently, but the Hawthorne name still means something. There will always be people tripping over themselves to do favors for any one of us.โ He didnโt move, didnโt blink, wasnโt physically aggressive in any way, but he bled power, and he knew it. โWhatever youโre hiding, Iโll find it. Every last secret. Within days, Iโll have a detailed dossier on every person in your life. Your sister. Your father. Your motherโโ
โDonโt talk about my mother.โ My chest was tight. Breathing was a challenge.
โStay away from my family, Ms. Grambs.โ Grayson pushed past me. Iโd been dismissed.
โOr what?โ I called after him, and then, possessed by something I couldnโt quite name, I continued. โOr what happened to Emily will happen to me?โ
Grayson jerked to a halt, every muscle in his body taut. โDonโt you say her name.โ His posture was angry, but his voice sounded like it was about to crumble. Like Iโdย guttedย him.
Not just Jameson.ย My mouth went dry.ย Emily didnโt just matter to Jameson.
I felt a hand on my shoulder.ย Oren.ย His expression was gentle, but clearly, he wanted me to leave it alone.
โYou wonโt last a month in this house.โ Grayson managed to pull himself together long enough to issue that prediction like a royal issuing a decree. โIn fact, Iโd lay money that youโre gone within the week.โ
