Chapter no 12

The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, 1)

Mother-faxing elf,โ€ Max breathed.ย โ€œGoat-dram, mother-faxing elf.โ€ย She lowered her voice to a whisper and let out an actual expletive. It was past midnight for me, and two hours earlier for her. I half expected Mrs. Liu to sweep in and snatch the phone away, but nothing happened.

โ€œHow?โ€ Max demanded. โ€œWhy?โ€

I looked down at the letter in my lap. Tobias Hawthorne had left me an explanation, but in the hours since the will was read, I hadnโ€™t been able to bring myself to open the envelope. I was alone, sitting in the dark on the balcony of the penthouse suite of aย hotel that I owned, wearing a plush, floor-length robe that probably cost more than my carโ€”and I was frozen.

โ€œMaybe,โ€ Max said thoughtfully, โ€œyou were switched at birth.โ€ Max watched a lot of television and had what could probably have been classified as a book addiction. โ€œMaybe your mother saved his life, years ago. Maybe he owes his entire fortune to your great-great-grandfather.ย Maybe you were selected via an advanced computer algorithm that is poised to develop artificial intelligence any day!โ€

โ€œMaxine.โ€ I snorted. Somehow, that was enough to allow me to say the exact words Iโ€™d been trying not to think. โ€œMaybe my father isnโ€™t really my father.โ€

That was the most rational explanation, wasnโ€™t it? Maybe Tobias Hawthorneย hadnโ€™tย disinherited his family for a stranger. Maybe Iย wasย family.

I have a secret.โ€ฆย I pictured my mom in my mind. How many times had I heard her say those exact words?

โ€œYou okay?โ€ Max asked on the other end of the line.

I looked down at the envelope, at my name in calligraphy on the front. I swallowed. โ€œTobias Hawthorne left me a letter.โ€

โ€œAnd you havenโ€™t opened it yet?โ€ Max said. โ€œAvery, for fox sakesโ€”โ€

โ€œMaxine!โ€ Even over the phone, I could hear Maxโ€™s mom in the background.

โ€œFox, Mama. I saidย fox.ย As in โ€˜for the sake of foxes and their furry little tailsโ€ฆโ€™โ€ There was a brief pause and then: โ€œAvery? I have to go.โ€

My stomach muscles tightened. โ€œTalk soon?โ€

โ€œVery soon,โ€ Max promised. โ€œAnd in the meantime: Open. The. Letter.โ€

She hung up. I hung up. I put my thumb underneath the lip of the envelopeโ€”but a knock at the door saved me from following through.

Back in the suite, I found Oren positioned at the door. โ€œWho is it?โ€ I asked him.

โ€œGrayson Hawthorne,โ€ Oren replied. I stared at the door, and Oren elaborated. โ€œIf my men considered him a threat, he never would have made it to our floor. I trust Grayson. But if you donโ€™t want to see himโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I said.ย What am I doing?ย It was late, and I doubted American royalty took kindly to being dethroned. But there was something about the way Grayson had looked at me, from the first time weโ€™d met.โ€ฆ

โ€œOpen the door,โ€ I told Oren. He did, and then he stepped back.

โ€œArenโ€™t you going to invite me in?โ€ Grayson wasnโ€™t theย heirย anymore, but you wouldnโ€™t have known it from his tone.

โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t be here,โ€ I told him, pulling my robe tighter around me. โ€œIโ€™ve spent the past hour telling myself much the same thing, and yet,

here I am.โ€ His eyes were pools of gray, his hair unkempt, like I wasnโ€™t the only one who hadnโ€™t been able to sleep. Heโ€™d lost everything today.

โ€œGraysonโ€”โ€ I said.

โ€œI donโ€™t know how you did this.โ€ He cut me off, his voice dangerous and soft. โ€œI donโ€™t know what hold you had over my grandfather, or what kind of con youโ€™re running here.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m notโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m talking right now, Ms. Grambs.โ€ He placed his hand flat on the door. Iโ€™d been wrong about his eyes. They werenโ€™t pools. They were ice. โ€œI havenโ€™t a clue how you pulled this off, but I will find out. I see you now. I know what you are and what youโ€™re capable of, and there isย nothingย I wouldnโ€™t do to protect my family. Whatever game youโ€™re playing here, no matter how long this conโ€”I will find the truth, and God help you when I do.โ€

Oren stepped into my peripheral vision, but I didnโ€™t wait for him to act. I

pushed the door forward, hard enough to send Grayson back, then slammed it closed. Heart pounding, I waited for him to knock again, to shout through the door.ย Nothing.ย Slowly, my head bowed, my eyes drawn like magnet to metal by the envelope in my hands.

With one last glance at Oren, I retreated to my bedroom.ย Open. The. Letter.ย This time, I did it, removing a card from the envelope. The body of the message was only two words long. I stared at the page, reading the salutation, the message, and the signature, over and over again.

Dearest Avery, Iโ€™m sorry.
