Chapter no 10

The Inheritance Games (The Inheritance Games, 1)

This is not happening.

This cannot be happening. Iโ€™m dreaming.

Iโ€™m delusional.

โ€œHe left everything toย her?โ€ Skyeโ€™s voice was shrill enough to break through my stupor. โ€œWhy?โ€ Gone was the woman whoโ€™d mused about my astrological sign and regaled me with tales of her sons and lovers. This Skye looked like she could kill someone. Literally.

โ€œWho the hell is she?โ€ Zaraโ€™s voice was knife-edged and clear as a bell. โ€œThere must be some mistake.โ€ Grayson spoke like a person used to

dealing with mistakes.ย Bribe, threaten, buy out,ย I thought. What would the โ€œheir apparentโ€ do to me?ย This is not happening.ย I felt that with every beat of my heart, every breath in, every breath out.ย This cannot be happening.

โ€œHeโ€™s right.โ€ My words came out in a whisper, lost to voices being raised all around me. I tried again, louder. โ€œGraysonโ€™s right.โ€ Heads started turning in my direction. โ€œThere must be some mistake.โ€ My voice was hoarse. I felt like Iโ€™d just jumped out of a plane. Like I was skydiving and waiting for my chute to open.

This is not real. It canโ€™t be.

โ€œAvery.โ€ย Libby nudged me in the ribs, clearly telegraphing that I should shut up and stop talking aboutย mistakes.

But there was no way. There had to have been some kind of mix-up. A man Iโ€™d never met hadnโ€™t just left me a multi-billion-dollar fortune. Things like that didnโ€™t happen, period.

โ€œYou see?โ€ Skye latched on to what Iโ€™d said. โ€œEven Ava agrees this is ridiculous.โ€

This time, I was pretty sure sheโ€™d gotten my name wrong on purpose.

The remainder of my estate, including all properties, monetary assets, and

worldly possessions not otherwise specified, I leave to Avery Kylie Grambs.

Skye Hawthorne knew my name now.

They all did.

โ€œI assure you, there is no mistake.โ€ Mr. Ortega met my gaze, then turned his attention to the others. โ€œAnd I assure the rest of you, Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s last will and testament is utterly unbreakable. Since the majority of the remaining details concern only Avery, weโ€™ll cease with the dramatics. But let me make one thing very clear: Per the terms of the will, any heir who challenges Averyโ€™s inheritance will forfeit their share of the estate entirely.โ€

Averyโ€™s inheritance.ย I felt dizzy, almost nauseous. It was like someone had snapped their fingers and rewritten the laws of physics, like the coefficient of gravity had changed, and my body was ill-suited to coping. The world was spinning off its axis.

โ€œNo will is that ironclad,โ€ Zaraโ€™s husband said, his voice acidic. โ€œNot when thereโ€™s this kind of money at stake.โ€

โ€œSpoken,โ€ Nash Hawthorne interjected, โ€œlike someone who didnโ€™t really know the old man.โ€

โ€œTraps upon traps,โ€ Jameson murmured. โ€œAnd riddles upon riddles.โ€ I could feel his dark green eyes on mine.

โ€œI think you should leave,โ€ Grayson told me curtly. Not a request. An order.

โ€œTechnicallyโ€ฆโ€ Alisa Ortega sounded like sheโ€™d just swallowed arsenic. โ€œItโ€™s her house.โ€

Clearly, she really hadnโ€™t known what was in the will. Sheโ€™d been kept in the dark, just like the family.ย How could Tobias Hawthorne blindside them like this? What kind of person does that to their own flesh and blood?

โ€œI donโ€™t understand,โ€ I said out loud, dizzy and numb, because none of this made any kind of sense.

โ€œMy daughter is correct.โ€ Mr. Ortega kept his tone neutral. โ€œYou own it all, Ms. Grambs. Not just the fortune, but all of Mr. Hawthorneโ€™s properties, including Hawthorne House. Per the terms of your inheritance, which I will gladly go over with you, the current occupants have been granted tenancy unlessโ€”and untilโ€”they give you cause for removal.โ€ He let those words hang in the air. โ€œUnder no circumstances,โ€ he continued gravely, his words rife with warning, โ€œcan those tenants attempt to remove you.โ€

The room was suddenly silent and still.ย Theyโ€™re going to kill me. Someone in this room is actually going to kill me.ย The man Iโ€™d pegged as former military strode to stand between me and Tobias Hawthorneโ€™s family. He said nothing, crossing his arms over his chest, keeping me behind him and the rest of them in his sight.

โ€œOren!โ€ Zara sounded shocked. โ€œYou work for this family.โ€

โ€œI worked for Mr. Hawthorne.โ€ John Oren paused and held up a piece of paper. It took me a moment to realize that it was his letter. โ€œIt was his last request that I continue in the employment of Ms. Avery Kylie Grambs.โ€ He glanced at me. โ€œSecurity. Youโ€™ll need it.โ€

โ€œAnd not just to protect you from us!โ€ Xander added to my left. โ€œTake a step back, please,โ€ Oren ordered.

Xander held his hands up. โ€œPeace,โ€ he declared. โ€œI make dire predictions in peace!โ€

โ€œXanโ€™s right.โ€ Jameson smiled, like this was all a game. โ€œThe entire worldโ€™s going to want a piece of you, Mystery Girl. This hasย story of the centuryย written all over it.โ€

Story of the century.ย My brain kicked back into gear because there was every indication that this wasnโ€™t a joke. I wasnโ€™t delusional. I wasnโ€™t dreaming.

I was an heiress.
