This is not happening.
This cannot be happening. Iโm dreaming.
Iโm delusional.
โHe left everything toย her?โ Skyeโs voice was shrill enough to break through my stupor. โWhy?โ Gone was the woman whoโd mused about my astrological sign and regaled me with tales of her sons and lovers. This Skye looked like she could kill someone. Literally.
โWho the hell is she?โ Zaraโs voice was knife-edged and clear as a bell. โThere must be some mistake.โ Grayson spoke like a person used to
dealing with mistakes.ย Bribe, threaten, buy out,ย I thought. What would the โheir apparentโ do to me?ย This is not happening.ย I felt that with every beat of my heart, every breath in, every breath out.ย This cannot be happening.
โHeโs right.โ My words came out in a whisper, lost to voices being raised all around me. I tried again, louder. โGraysonโs right.โ Heads started turning in my direction. โThere must be some mistake.โ My voice was hoarse. I felt like Iโd just jumped out of a plane. Like I was skydiving and waiting for my chute to open.
This is not real. It canโt be.
โAvery.โย Libby nudged me in the ribs, clearly telegraphing that I should shut up and stop talking aboutย mistakes.
But there was no way. There had to have been some kind of mix-up. A man Iโd never met hadnโt just left me a multi-billion-dollar fortune. Things like that didnโt happen, period.
โYou see?โ Skye latched on to what Iโd said. โEven Ava agrees this is ridiculous.โ
This time, I was pretty sure sheโd gotten my name wrong on purpose.
The remainder of my estate, including all properties, monetary assets, and
worldly possessions not otherwise specified, I leave to Avery Kylie Grambs.
Skye Hawthorne knew my name now.
They all did.
โI assure you, there is no mistake.โ Mr. Ortega met my gaze, then turned his attention to the others. โAnd I assure the rest of you, Tobias Hawthorneโs last will and testament is utterly unbreakable. Since the majority of the remaining details concern only Avery, weโll cease with the dramatics. But let me make one thing very clear: Per the terms of the will, any heir who challenges Averyโs inheritance will forfeit their share of the estate entirely.โ
Averyโs inheritance.ย I felt dizzy, almost nauseous. It was like someone had snapped their fingers and rewritten the laws of physics, like the coefficient of gravity had changed, and my body was ill-suited to coping. The world was spinning off its axis.
โNo will is that ironclad,โ Zaraโs husband said, his voice acidic. โNot when thereโs this kind of money at stake.โ
โSpoken,โ Nash Hawthorne interjected, โlike someone who didnโt really know the old man.โ
โTraps upon traps,โ Jameson murmured. โAnd riddles upon riddles.โ I could feel his dark green eyes on mine.
โI think you should leave,โ Grayson told me curtly. Not a request. An order.
โTechnicallyโฆโ Alisa Ortega sounded like sheโd just swallowed arsenic. โItโs her house.โ
Clearly, she really hadnโt known what was in the will. Sheโd been kept in the dark, just like the family.ย How could Tobias Hawthorne blindside them like this? What kind of person does that to their own flesh and blood?
โI donโt understand,โ I said out loud, dizzy and numb, because none of this made any kind of sense.
โMy daughter is correct.โ Mr. Ortega kept his tone neutral. โYou own it all, Ms. Grambs. Not just the fortune, but all of Mr. Hawthorneโs properties, including Hawthorne House. Per the terms of your inheritance, which I will gladly go over with you, the current occupants have been granted tenancy unlessโand untilโthey give you cause for removal.โ He let those words hang in the air. โUnder no circumstances,โ he continued gravely, his words rife with warning, โcan those tenants attempt to remove you.โ
The room was suddenly silent and still.ย Theyโre going to kill me. Someone in this room is actually going to kill me.ย The man Iโd pegged as former military strode to stand between me and Tobias Hawthorneโs family. He said nothing, crossing his arms over his chest, keeping me behind him and the rest of them in his sight.
โOren!โ Zara sounded shocked. โYou work for this family.โ
โI worked for Mr. Hawthorne.โ John Oren paused and held up a piece of paper. It took me a moment to realize that it was his letter. โIt was his last request that I continue in the employment of Ms. Avery Kylie Grambs.โ He glanced at me. โSecurity. Youโll need it.โ
โAnd not just to protect you from us!โ Xander added to my left. โTake a step back, please,โ Oren ordered.
Xander held his hands up. โPeace,โ he declared. โI make dire predictions in peace!โ
โXanโs right.โ Jameson smiled, like this was all a game. โThe entire worldโs going to want a piece of you, Mystery Girl. This hasย story of the centuryย written all over it.โ
Story of the century.ย My brain kicked back into gear because there was every indication that this wasnโt a joke. I wasnโt delusional. I wasnโt dreaming.
I was an heiress.
