I WALKED INTO THE WOMENโS Room, thoughts focused on Maxonโs new plan. The queen hadnโt shown up yet, and the girls were all laughing in a clump by the windows.
โAmerica, come here!โ Kriss said urgently. Even Celeste turned back smiling, waving me over.
I was a little uneasy about what could be waiting for me, but I walked to the huddle anyway.
โOh, my goodness!โ I squealed. โI know,โ Celeste sighed.
There, running laps in the garden without their shirts on, were half of the guards in the palace. Aspen had told me that all guards got injections to help keep them strong, but apparently they also did a lot of work to keep their bodies in peak condition.
While we were all devoted to Maxon, the sight of cute boys was something we couldnโt ignore.
โThe guy with blond hair,โ Kriss said. โWell, I think heโs a blond.
Their hair is so short!โ
โI like this one,โ Elise said quietly as another guard ran past our window.
Kriss giggled. โI canโt believe weโre doing this!โ
โOh, oh! That guy, right there with the green eyes,โ Celeste said, pointing to Aspen.
Kriss sighed. โI danced with him at Halloween, and heโs as funny as he is good-looking.โ
โI danced with him, too,โ Celeste bragged. โEasily the most gorgeous guard in the palace.โ
I had to laugh a little. I wondered how she would feel if she knew he used to be a Six.
I watched him run and thought about the hundreds of times those arms had embraced me. The distance growing between Aspen and me felt unavoidable, but even now I had to wonder if there was a way to keep some piece of what we had. What if I needed him?
โWhat about you, America?โ Kriss asked.
The only one who really caught my eye was Aspen, and after feeling that ache for him, this felt kind of stupid. I dodged the question.
โI donโt know. Theyโre all kind of nice.โ
โKind of nice?โ Celeste echoed. โYou have to be kidding! These are some of the best-looking guys Iโve ever seen.โ
โItโs only a bunch of boys without their shirts on,โ I countered. โYeah, why donโt you enjoy it for a minute before itโs just the three
of us you have to look at,โ she said snippily.
โWhatever. Maxon looks just as good without his shirt on as any of those guys.โ
โWhat?โ Kriss shrieked.
A second after the words slipped out of my mouth, I realized what Iโd said. Three sets of eyes focused in on me.
โWhen were you and Maxon topless, exactly?โ Celeste demanded. โI wasnโt!โ
โBut he was?โ Kriss asked. โWas that what that god-awful dress was about yesterday?โ
Celeste gasped. โYou slut!โ โExcuse me!โ I yelled.
โWell, what else would you expect?โ she snapped, crossing her arms. โUnless you want to tell us all what happened and why weโre so wrong.โ But there was no way to explain this. Undressing Maxon hadnโt exactly been a romantic moment, but I couldnโt tell them Iโd been tending to wounds on his back specifically delivered by his father. Heโd spent his life guarding that secret. If I betrayed him now, it would be the
end of us.
โCeleste was half-naked up against him in a hallway!โ I accused, pointing a finger at her.
Her mouth popped open. โHow did you know?โ
โHas everyone been getting naked with Maxon?โ Elise asked, horrified.
โWe werenโt naked!โ I shouted.
โOkay,โ Kriss said, putting out her arms. โWe need to clear this up.
Who has done what with Maxon?โ
Everyone was quiet for a moment, not wanting to speak up first. โIโve kissed him,โ Elise said. โThree times, but thatโs it.โ
โI havenโt kissed him at all,โ Kriss confessed. โBut thatโs by my own choosing. He would kiss me if Iโd let him.โ
โReally? Not once?โ Celeste asked, shocked. โNot once.โ
โWell, Iโve kissed him plenty.โ Celeste flipped her hair, deciding to be proud instead of embarrassed. โThe best was in the hallway one night.โ She eyed me. โWe kept whispering about how exciting it was that we might get caught.โ
Finally all eyes were on me. I thought of the kingโs words, suggesting that maybe the other girls were being much more promiscuous than I was prepared to be. But now I knew it was one more weapon in his arsenal, a way to make me feel insignificant. I came clean.
โI was Maxonโs first kiss, not Olivia. I didnโt want anyone to know. And weโve had a few . . . more intimate moments, and one of those times Maxonโs shirt came off.โ
โCame off? Like it magically flew over his head?โ Celeste pressed. โHe took it off,โ I admitted.
Not satisfied, Celeste pushed on. โHe took it off orย youย took it off?โ โI guess we both did.โ
After a charged moment, Kriss started again. โOkay, so now we all know where we stand.โ
โAnd where is that?โ Elise asked. No one answered.
โI just want to say . . . ,โ I started. โAll of those moments were really important to me, and I care about Maxon.โ
โAre you implying that we donโt?โ Celeste barked. โI know thatย youย donโt.โ
โHow dare you?โ
โCeleste, itโs no secret that you want someone with power. Iโm willing to bet you like Maxon well enough, but youโre not in love with him. Youโre shooting for the crown.โ
Without denying it, she turned on Elise. โWhat about this one? Iโve never seen a speck of emotion out of you!โ
โIโm reserved. You should try it sometime,โ Elise fired back quickly. Seeing a spark of anger in Elise made me like her more. โIn my family, all the marriages are arranged. I knew what was coming for me, and thatโs all this is. I may not be head over heels for Maxon, but I respect him. Love can come later.โ
Sympathetically, Kriss spoke. โThat actually sounds kind of sad, Elise.โ
โItโs not. There are bigger things than love.โ
We stared at Elise, her words echoing. I fought for my family out of love, and for Aspen, too. And now, though it scared me to think it, I was sure that all my actions where Maxon was concernedโeven when they were hopelessly stupidโwere driven by that feeling. Still, what if there was something more important here than that?
โWell, Iโll say it: I love him,โ Kriss blurted. โI love him, and I want him to marry me.โ
Snapped back into the discussion at hand, I ached to melt into the carpet. What had I started?
โAll right, America, fess up,โ Celeste demanded.
I froze, breathing shallowly. It took me a moment to find the right words.
โMaxon knows how I feel, and thatโs all that matters.โ
She rolled her eyes at my answer but didnโt press any further. No doubt she was worried I would do the same to her if she did.
We stood there, looking at one another. The Selection had been going on for months, and now we could finally see the real lines of competition. Weโd all gotten a peek into everyone elseโs relationship with Maxonโat least one aspect of itโand could look at them side by side.
Moments later the queen walked in, wishing us a good morning. After curtsying to her, we all retreated. Into corners, into ourselves. Maybe it was always supposed to come to this. There were four girls and one prince, and three of us would be leaving soon with little more than an interesting story of how we spent our fall.โ
