It was already the middle of January, and we still hadnโt even chosen what science-fair project we were going to work on. I guess I kept putting it off because I just didnโt want to do it. Finally, August was like, โDude, we have to do this.โ So we went to his house after school. I was really nervous because I didnโt know if August had ever told his parents about what we now called the Halloween Incident. Turns out the dad wasnโt even home and the mom was out running errands. Iโm pretty sure from the two seconds Iโd spent talking to her that Auggie had never mentioned a thing about it. She was super cool and
friendly toward me.
When I first walked into Auggieโs room, I was like, โWhoa, Auggie, you have got a seriousย Star Warsย addiction.โ
He had ledges full ofย Star Warsย miniatures, and a hugeย The Empire Strikes Backย poster on his wall.
โI know, right?โ he laughed.
He sat down on a rolling chair next to his desk and I plopped down on a beanbag chair in the corner. Thatโs when his dog waddled into the room right up to me.
โHe was on your holiday card!โ I said, letting the dog sniff my hand.
โShe,โ he corrected me. โDaisy. You can pet her. She doesnโt bite.โ
When I started petting her, she basically just rolled over onto her back.
โShe wants you to rub her tummy,โ said August.
โOkay, this is the cutest dog Iโve ever seen,โ I said, rubbing her stomach.
โI know, right? Sheโs the best dog in the world. Arenโt you, girlie?โ
As soon as she heard Auggieโs voice say that, the dog started wagging her tail and went over to him.
โWhoโs my little girlie? Whoโs my little girlie?โ Auggie was saying as she licked him all over the face.
โI wish I had a dog,โ I said. โMy parents think our apartmentโs too
small.โ I started looking around at the stuff in his room while he turned on the computer. โHey, youโve got an Xbox 360? Can we play?โ
โDude, weโre here to work on the science-fair project.โ โDo you haveย Halo?โ
โOf course I haveย Halo.โ โPlease can we play?โ
He had logged on to the Beecher website and was now scrolling down Ms. Rubinโs teacher page through the list of science-fair projects. โCan you see from there?โ he said.
I sighed and went to sit on a little stool that was right next to him. โCool iMac,โ I said.
โWhat kind of computer do you have?โ
โDude, I donโt even have my own room, much less my own computer. My parents have this ancient Dell thatโs practically dead.โ
โOkay, how about this one?โ he said, turning the screen in my direction so I would look. I made a quick scan of the screen and my eyes literally started blurring.
โMaking a sun clock,โ he said. โThat sounds kind of cool.โ I leaned back. โCanโt we just make a volcano?โ
โEveryone makes volcanoes.โ
โDuh, because itโs easy,โ I said, petting Daisy again.
โWhat about: How to make crystal spikes out of Epsom salt?โ โSounds boring,โ I answered. โSo whyโd you call her Daisy?โ
He didnโt look up from the screen. โMy sister named her. I wanted to call her Darth. Actually, technically speaking, her full name is Darth Daisy, but we never really called her that.โ
โDarth Daisy! Thatโs funny! Hi, Darth Daisy!โ I said to the dog, who rolled onto her back again for me to rub her tummy.
โOkay, this one is the one,โ said August, pointing to a picture on the screen of a bunch of potatoes with wires poking out of them. โHow to build an organic battery made of potatoes. Now, thatโs cool. It says here you could power a lamp with it. We could call it the Spud Lamp or something. What do you think?โ
โDude, that sounds way too hard. You know I suck at science.โ โShut up, you do not.โ
โYeah I do! I got a fifty-four on my last test. I suck at science!โ
โNo you donโt! And that was only because we were still fighting and I wasnโt helping you. I can help you now. This is a good project, Jack. Weโve got to do it.โ
โFine, whatever.โ I shrugged.
Just then there was a knock on the door. A teenage girl with long dark wavy hair poked her head inside the door. She wasnโt expecting to see me.
โOh, hey,โ she said to both of us.
โHey, Via,โ said August, looking back at the computer screen. โVia, this is Jack. Jack, thatโs Via.โ
โHey,โ I said, nodding hello.
โHey,โ she said, looking at me carefully. I knew the second Auggie said my name that he had told her about the stuff I had said about him. I could tell from the way she looked at me. In fact, the way she looked at me made me think she remembered me from that day at Carvel on Amesfort Avenue all those years ago.
โAuggie, I have a friend I want you to meet, okay?โ she said. โHeโs coming over in a few minutes.โ
โIs he your newย boyfriend?โ August teased.
Via kicked the bottom of his chair. โJust be nice,โ she said, and left the room.
โDude, your sisterโs hot,โ I said. โI know.โ
โShe hates me, right? You told her about the Halloween Incident?โ โYeah.โ
โYeah, she hates me or yeah, you told her about Halloween?โ โBoth.โ
