So in August my parents got this call from Mr. Tushman, the middle- school director. And my Mom said: โMaybe he calls all the new students to welcome them,โ and my dad said: โThatโs a lot of kids heโd be calling.โ So my mom called him back, and I could hear her talking to Mr. Tushman on the phone. This is exactly what she said:
โOh, hi, Mr. Tushman. This is Amanda Will, returning your call?ย Pause. Oh, thank you! Thatโs so nice of you to say. He is looking forward to it.ย Pause. Yes.ย Pause. Yeah.ย Pause. Oh. Sure.ย Long pause. Ohhh. Uh-huh.ย Pause. Well, thatโs so nice of you to say.ย Pause. Sure. Ohh. Wow. Ohhhh.ย Super long pause. I see, of course. Iโm sure he will. Let me write it down โฆ got it. Iโll call you after Iโve had a chance to talk to him, okay?ย Pause. No, thank you for thinking of him. Bye bye!โ
And when she hung up, I was like, โwhatโs up, what did he say?โ And Mom said: โWell, itโs actually very flattering but kind of sad,
too. See, thereโs this boy whoโs starting middle school this year, and heโs never been in a real school environment before because he was homeschooled, so Mr. Tushman talked to some of the lower-school teachers to find out who they thought were some of the really, really great kids coming into fifth grade, and the teachers must have told him you were an especially nice kidโwhich I already knew, of course
โand so Mr. Tushman is wondering if he could count on you to sort of shepherd this new boy around a bit?โ
โLike let him hang out with me?โ I said.
โExactly,โ said Mom. โHe called it being a โwelcome buddy.โ โ โBut why me?โ
โI told you. Your teachers told Mr. Tushman that you were the kind of kid whoโs known for being a good egg. I mean, Iโm so proud that they think so highly of you.โฆโ
โWhy is it sad?โ โWhat do you mean?โ
โYou said itโs flattering but kind of sad, too.โ
โOh.โ Mom nodded. โWell, apparently this boy has some sort
of โฆ um, I guess thereโs something wrong with his face โฆ or something like that. Not sure. Maybe he was in an accident. Mr. Tushman said heโd explain a bit more when you come to the school next week.โ
โSchool doesnโt start till September!โ
โHe wants you to meet this kid before school starts.โ โDo I have to?โ
Mom looked a bit surprised.
โWell, no, of course not,โ she said, โbut it would be the nice thing to do, Jack.โ
โIf I donโt have to do it,โ I said, โI donโt want to do it.โ โCan you at least think about it?โ
โIโm thinking about it and I donโt want to do it.โ
โWell, Iโm not going to force you,โ she said, โbut at least think about it some more, okay? Iโm not calling Mr. Tushman back until tomorrow, so just sit with it a bit. I mean, Jack, I really donโt think itโs that much to ask that you spend a little extra time with some new kid.
โฆโ
โItโs not just that heโs a new kid, Mom,โ I answered. โHeโs deformed.โ
โThatโs a terrible thing to say, Jack.โ โHe is, Mom.โ
โYou donโt even know who it is!โ
โYeah, I do,โ I said, because I knew the second she started talking about him that it was that kid named August.
