Jamie answers on the last ring, just before his funny and clever voice mail message would have played. His voice is blurry with sleep. Itโs eight oโclock in the morning, the first Saturday since we started school again. Itโs the year we graduate now, the year weโre supposed to be grown up.
โJamie?โ
โWhat? I was sleeping.โ
โJamie, my parents are getting a divorce.โ There is a silence. I imagine him sitting up, rubbing his face with one hand.
โGod, pretty girl, Iโm sorry.โ
โIโm not even sure why Iโm upset,โ I say. Iโm in my room curled in my desk chair. Itโs raining outside, dark and cold. I have a quilt over my shoulders and my cheek resting on my knee. โHardly anything is going to change. Apparently Dad moved into an apartment downtown a week ago and I didnโt even notice.โ
โWhen did you find out?โ
โThey told me last night, over dinner. And they said all that bullshit about how it wasnโt my fault and they both still loved me etc., etc., like I was six or something.โ
โWhy didnโt you call me?โ โI did. You didnโt answer.โ
โOh shit. I remember. I was at the movie with Sashaโโ โI know. Itโs fine.โ
โI meant to call you back.โ
โItโs fine,โ I say. My words sound harsh in my ears but Jamie does not say anything about it. I swallow. โDo you think you could come over?โ
โYeah,โ Jamie says. โJust let me shower firstโhey, want me to take you out to breakfast?โ
โI donโt think I can eat.โ โAre you sure?โ
โYeah,โ I say. I pull the quilt tighter around me. โJust come over and hold me.โ
โWill do, pretty girl. Iโll see you in a minute.โ โWait! Jamie?โ
โWhat?โ
โWill you ever leave me?โ โNope.โ
โPromise?โ โYup.โ
โOkay. Bye.โ โBye. Love you.โ
โI love you too, Jamie.โ
I lay my phone on the desk and watch the rain outside my window.
