Chapter no 37

Caraval (Caraval, 1)

He no longer wore a top hat, and heโ€™d traded his dark tailcoat for a crisp white frock coat, but his eyes still sparked with the same mad gleam, as if there was something unhinged behind them, and he didnโ€™t care about hiding it.

โ€œScar,โ€ Tella hissed.ย Acting weird again,ย she mouthed. โ€œNo, I know him,โ€ Scarlett insisted. โ€œThatโ€™s Legend.โ€

โ€œScarlett, please stop acting crazy,โ€ Tella said. โ€œDanielโ€™s been with me, all night,ย every nightย of the game. Itโ€™s not possible for him to be Legend.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true.โ€ Legend hooked his arm around Tellaโ€™s shoulder; she looked childlike under his heavy grip as he possessively pulled her short frame closer.

โ€œGet your hands off her!โ€ Scarlett launched herself at Legend.

โ€œScar! Stop!โ€ Tella grabbed Scarlettโ€™s hair, yanking her away before she managed more than a scratch.

โ€œDaniel, Iโ€™m so sorry,โ€ Tella said. โ€œI donโ€™t know whatโ€™s gotten into her.

Scarlett, end this madness!โ€

โ€œHe lied to you!โ€ Scarlettโ€™s scalp burned as she struggled with Tella. โ€œHeโ€™s a murderer.โ€

Though Legend didnโ€™t look like a killer just then. Dressed in white, and without his mad smile, he looked as innocent as a saint. โ€œMaybe we should tie her up before she hurts herself.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Scarlett shouted.

A flash of unease crossed Tellaโ€™s face.

โ€œLove, sheโ€™s wild, sheโ€™s going to hurt one of us.โ€ Legendโ€™s brows drew together as if he were truly worried. โ€œRemember the warnings about people

who get swept too far away? Iโ€™ll hold her while you fetch rope. There should be some in a dressing trunk for episodes like this.โ€

โ€œTella, please, donโ€™t listen to him,โ€ Scarlett pled.

โ€œLove,โ€ coaxed Legend, his voice dripping deceptive concern. โ€œItโ€™s for her own safety.โ€

Tellaโ€™s eyes darted from Legend, in all his pristine glory, to Scarlett, with her knotted hair and tear-stained cheeks. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ Tella said. โ€œI donโ€™t want you to get hurt.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Scarlett thrashed again, ripping the sleeve of her dress and spilling beads on the floor, as Legend took her from her sister. Hands as strong as iron manacles twisted her wrists behind her back, while Tella disappeared behind her dressing curtain.

โ€œSee how willing she is to do whatever I suggest?โ€ Legend purred into her ear.

โ€œPlease,โ€ Scarlett begged, โ€œleave her alone. Iโ€™ll do whatever you say if you let her go. You want me to jump off the balcony, I will. Just donโ€™t hurt her!โ€

In one sharp motion, Legend spun Scarlett around. Pale skin and harsh cheekbones, and eyes full of unveiled madness. โ€œYou would jump for her, to your death?โ€ He released Scarlett with a shove. โ€œThen do it. Now.โ€

โ€œYou want me to jump right now?โ€

โ€œNot right now.โ€ His lips twitched at the corners, the demented imitation of a smile. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t have invited you to her funeral if I planned on you dying tonight. Just walk to the edge of the balcony, as close as you can get without falling over.โ€

Scarlett couldnโ€™t think clearly. She wondered if this was how Tella felt around Legend. Befuddled and bewildered. โ€œIf I do this, you promise you wonโ€™t hurt my sister?โ€

โ€œYou have my word.โ€ Legendย X-ed a pale finger over his heart. โ€œIf you walk to the rim of the balcony, I swear, on my amazing life, I will not touch your sister again.โ€

โ€œAnd promise me you wonโ€™t let anyone else?โ€

Legend raked Scarlett over with his eyes, from the ripped sleeve of her

dress to her naked feet. โ€œYouโ€™re not really in a position to make deals.โ€ โ€œThen why are you making a deal with me?โ€

โ€œI want to see how far youโ€™re willing to go.โ€ His tone turned syrupy with curiosity, but the look he gave her was pure challenge. โ€œIf youโ€™re not willing to do this, youโ€™ll never be able to save her.โ€

To Scarlett it sounded as if he said,ย If youโ€™re not able to do this, you donโ€™t love her enough.

Purposefully, Scarlett started toward the edge of the balcony. Night air swept around her ankles as she drew closer, and even though Scarlett had never feared heights, she felt dizzy as she dared to look down at the specks of light and dots of people, and the solid ground that would show no mercy if sheโ€”

โ€œStop!โ€ Legend yelled.

Scarlett froze, but Legend continued to shout, filling his voice with artificial terror, making it crack in all the right places. โ€œDonatella, hurry, your sister is trying to jump.โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ Scarlett hollered. โ€œIโ€™m notโ€”โ€

A warning look from Legend cut her off. โ€œSay another word, and you have no guarantees from me.โ€

But a promise from him meant nothing. Sheโ€™d been a fool to believe anything heโ€™d said. Heโ€™d driven her to the edge to push her further from Tella, who looked stricken when she reappeared with the rope.

โ€œScarlett, please, donโ€™t jump!โ€ Tellaโ€™s face was red and splotchy. โ€œI wasnโ€™t going to jump,โ€ Scarlett insisted.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorryโ€”she convinced me to let her go,โ€ Legend said. โ€œThen she said if she jumped sheโ€™d wake up from the game.โ€

โ€œDaniel, itโ€™s not your fault,โ€ Tella said. โ€œScar, please, step away from the ledge.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s lying!โ€ Scarlett yelled. โ€œHeโ€™s the one who made me go to the edgeโ€” he said if I did, he wouldnโ€™t hurt you.โ€ Scarlett realized too late this only made her sound more insane. โ€œTella, please, you know me; you know I wouldnโ€™t do something like that.โ€

Tella sucked on her lower lip, looking torn once more, as if deep down Tella believed her sister wasnโ€™t suicidal.

โ€œI love you, Scar, but I know this game does strange things to people.โ€ Tella handed her coil of rope to Legend. He lowered his head dramatically, as if this pained him, too.

โ€œNo!โ€ Scarlett wanted to back away, but the edge of the balcony was behind her. The cruel night hungering to swallow her up if she fell.

She shot forward instead, trying to outrun Legend, but he moved like a viper. One hand wrapped around her wrists. He used the other to shove her into a chair.

โ€œLet me go!โ€ Scarlett tried to kick, but Tella was there as well, working to bind Scarlettโ€™s flailing ankles, while Legend secured her arms and chest to the chair. Scarlett could feel Legendโ€™s breath against her neck, hot as he whispered too low for Tella to hear,ย โ€œWait until you see what I do next.โ€

โ€œI will kill you!โ€ Scarlett screamed.

โ€œMaybe we should get her a sedative?โ€ asked Tella.

โ€œNo, I think this should hold her long enough.โ€ Legend tugged on the rope a final time, slicing through Scarlettโ€™s breathing.

A hidden door in the back opened, and Legendโ€™s maniacal smile returned as Scarlettโ€™s father, along with Count Nicolas dโ€™Arcy, walked through. The governor strode forward purposefully, head high, shoulders straight, as if he were an honored guest. The count appeared interested in only one personโ€” Scarlett.

โ€œTella!โ€ Scarlettโ€™s panic escalated.

For the first time there was a flicker of fear in Tellaโ€™s face as well. โ€œWhat are they doing here?โ€

โ€œI invited them.โ€ Legend waved an arm magnanimously toward Scarlett, who continued struggling against the rope, while the two men stepped closer.

โ€œAll tied up and ready to go, as promised,โ€ said Legend. โ€œDaniel, what are you doing?โ€ Tella whispered.

โ€œYou really should have listened to your sister.โ€ Legend stepped to the side as Governor Dragna and Count Nicolas dโ€™Arcy closed in on Scarlett.

The count had cleaned up since sheโ€™d seen him last. His black hair was combed, and heโ€™d changed into a fresh garnet-red tailcoat. He peered down at Scarlett and shook his head as if to say,ย I told you so.

โ€œCan I keep the rope?โ€ the governor asked, his eyes full of retribution. โ€œDaniel, tell them to stay away from us!โ€ Tella cried.

โ€œOh, Donatella,โ€ Legend said. โ€œStupid and stubborn until the end. There is no Daniel DeEngl. Though it was enjoyable pretending.โ€ Legend laughed perversely. The same awful sound Scarlett had first heard in the tunnels.

Splinters dug into Scarlettโ€™s arms while she battled to free herself from the ropes.

Tella didnโ€™t say another word, but Scarlett could see her sister crumbling. Growing smaller and younger and turning suddenly fragile as she continued to stare up at Legend the way Scarlett imagined sheโ€™d gazed at Julian when sheโ€™d first learned the truth about how heโ€™d deceived her. Believing but not accepting. Waiting for an explanation that Scarlett knew would never come.

Even Governor Dragna looked stunned by Legendโ€™s confessed identity. However, the count did not look entirely surprised. He merely cocked his head.

โ€œI donโ€™t believe you,โ€ Tella said.

โ€œWould you like me to perform a magic trick to prove Iโ€™m really him?โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s not what I donโ€™t believe. You said you loved me,โ€ Tella said. โ€œAll

those things you told meโ€”โ€

โ€œI lied,โ€ Legend answered flatly. And there was something about the flatness. As if Tella didnโ€™t even matter enough to hate.

โ€œBut โ€ฆ butโ€ฆโ€ Tella sputtered, the spell Legend cast upon her finally breaking. If she were made of porcelainโ€”as Scarlett often thoughtโ€”Tella would have shattered. But she just kept stepping back. Closer and closer to that dangerous edge of the balcony.

โ€œTella, stop!โ€ Scarlett yelled. โ€œYouโ€™re almost at the rim.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not stopping until you step away from her.โ€ Tella shot a pointed look at her father and the count. โ€œIf either of you take another step toward my sister, I swear Iโ€™ll jump. And, Father, you know if you donโ€™t have me, youโ€™ll

never be able to control Scarlett. Even if you have her, you wonโ€™t make this marriage happen.โ€

The governor and the count stopped moving, but Tella continued backing up, silver slippers sliding all the way to the edge of the balcony.

โ€œTella, stop!โ€ Scarlett fought to free herself from the rope, beads breaking off her dress as she thrashed against the chair. This couldnโ€™t be happening. Not after watching Julian die. She couldnโ€™t lose Tella like this. โ€œYouโ€™re getting too close to the edge!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a little late for that.โ€ Tella laughed, a brittle sound, as breakable as she looked. Scarlett wanted to run to her, to grab hold of her where she tottered on the balconyโ€™s rim. But the rope wasnโ€™t loose enough yet. Her ankles had managed to kick free, but her arms were still bound. Only the stars watched in sympathy as she rocked back and forth, hoping that if she knocked over the chair sheโ€™d smash one of its arms and finally break loose.

โ€œDonatella, itโ€™s all right,โ€ her father said, almost tenderly. โ€œYou can still come home with me. Iโ€™ll forgive you. Both you and your sister.โ€

โ€œYou expect me to believe that?!โ€ Tella exploded. โ€œYouโ€™re a liar, and worse than he is!โ€ She pointed a shaky finger at Legend. โ€œAll of you areย liars!โ€

โ€œTella, Iโ€™m not.โ€ With a crash Scarlettโ€™s chair hit the floor, one of its arms splintering, so that she could finally crawl out of the ropes and start for the ledge.

โ€œStay back, Scar!โ€ Tella moved one foot so her heel was over the rim. Scarlett froze.

โ€œTella, pleaseโ€”โ€ Scarlett took another tentative step, but when Tella wobbled, she froze again, terrified one false move would push her sister over the very edge she so badly wanted to rescue her from.

โ€œPlease, trust me.โ€ Scarlett held out a hand. No longer stained in blood, she hoped she could save Tella in the way she hadnโ€™t been able to save Julian in the tunnels. โ€œI will find a way to take care of you. I love you so much.โ€

โ€œOh, Scar,โ€ Tella said. Tears streamed down her pink cheeks. โ€œI love you, too. And I wish I was strong like you. Strong enough to hope it could be

better, but I canโ€™t do this anymore.โ€ Tellaโ€™s hazel eyes met Scarlettโ€™s, as sad as fresh-cut wood. Then she closed them, as if Tella couldnโ€™t bear to look at her. โ€œI meant it when I said Iโ€™d rather die at the edge of the world than live a miserable life on Trisda. Iโ€™m so sorry.โ€

With trembling fingers, Tella blew her sister a kiss. โ€œDonโ€™tโ€”โ€

Tella stepped off the edge of the balcony.

โ€œNo!โ€ Scarlett wailed, watching as her sister plummeted into the night. With no wings to fly her down, she fell to her death.
