Chapter no 36

Caraval (Caraval, 1)

Thereโ€™s nothing threatening about this.โ€ Tella laughed. โ€œNot unless youโ€™re nervous about the idea of Legend fancying you?โ€

โ€œNo! Thatโ€™s not what it said before. It was an invitation to a funeral,ย yourย funeral.โ€ Scarlett looked at Tella, her eyes pleading. โ€œIโ€™m not crazy,โ€ she insisted. โ€œThis note was different when I read it in the tunnels.โ€

โ€œThe ones beneath the game?โ€ Tella interrupted. โ€œArenโ€™t the tunnels where people go mad?โ€

โ€œIt was a different set. Tella, I swear, Iโ€™m not insane. The note said you would die tomorrow unless I could stop it. Please, even if you donโ€™t believe me, I need you to try.โ€

Tella must have seen her desperation. โ€œLet me see the paper again.โ€

Scarlett handed it back. Her sister examined the invite with particular care this time, holding it close to one of the fire pits. But no matter what, the script didnโ€™t change.

โ€œTella, I swear, it was for a funeral, not a party.โ€ โ€œI believe you,โ€ Tella said.

โ€œYou do?โ€

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m guessing itโ€™s like the tickets you received on Trisda, it changes in certain lights. But, Scarโ€ฆโ€ That painfully careful voice once more. โ€œCouldnโ€™t it be just another part of the game, a device to get you up here, because it was taking you so long, and now that you are here: ta-da! The note has changed from a threat to a reward. Tell me, which makes more sense?โ€

The way Tella said it sounded so very reasonable. And oh, how Scarlett wanted her to be right. She knew how deceiving the tunnelsโ€”and Legendโ€”

could be. But Legend was not the only threat.

โ€œTella, even if you donโ€™t believe me about this, I swear, Fatherโ€™s here. Heโ€™s looking for you, for us both, right now. And trust me when I say his presence is not a magical mirage of Caraval. Heโ€™s here with Count Nicolas dโ€™Arcy, my fiancรฉ. To escape, I had to knock dโ€™Arcy out with a protection elixir and then tie him to a bedโ€”Iโ€™m sure you can imagine how furious Father will be if he finds us now.โ€

โ€œYou tied your fiancรฉ to a bed?โ€ Tella snickered.

โ€œThis isnโ€™t a joke! Did you miss what I said about what will happen if Father finds us?โ€

โ€œScar, I didnโ€™t know you had it in you! I wonder what else the game has changed about you.โ€ Tella grinned wider, looking truly awed and impressed, which might have pleased Scarlett if she hadnโ€™t hoped her sister might grow frightened and panicked instead.

โ€œYouโ€™re missing the point. I had to do that because Father was going to make meโ€”โ€ Shame choked her throat as she tried to get the words out. Thinking of what her father had attempted to force upon her made her feel like not quite a person. More like a thing.

Tellaโ€™s expression softened. She wrapped her arms around Scarlett, hugging her in a way only a sister could. Fierce as a kitten whoโ€™d just gotten claws, willing to shred the whole world to make this right. And for a moment Scarlett thought it would be.

โ€œDo you believe me now?โ€ she asked.

โ€œI believe youโ€™ve been through a bit of madness this week, but itโ€™s over now. None of that was real.โ€ Tella gently smoothed a dark lock of hair from Scarlettโ€™s face. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to worry, sister. And,โ€ she added, โ€œsomeday, Father will pay for all his sins. Every night I pray an angel will come down and cut off his hands so he wonโ€™t hurt anyone again.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think thatโ€™s what angels do,โ€ Scarlett mumbled.

โ€œMaybe not the kind up in heaven, but there are different kinds of angels.โ€ Tella pulled away, pink lips parting into a smile made of hopes and dreams and other treacherous things.

โ€œDonโ€™t tell me youโ€™re planning to cut off Fatherโ€™s hands yourself.โ€

โ€œAfter tonight I donโ€™t think Fatherโ€™s hands will be a problem anymore, at least not for us.โ€ Tellaโ€™s eyes twinkled with the same dangerous glint as her smile. โ€œI havenโ€™t been up here alone this whole time. Iโ€™veย metย someone. He knows all about our father and heโ€™s promised to take care of us. Both of us.โ€ Tella beamed, brighter than candlelight and glass-cut glitter, the type of joy that could only mean one terrible thing.

When Tella had first said the wordย bored, Scarlett dared to hope Legend hadnโ€™t gotten to her. But from the pitch of Tellaโ€™s voice and the way she looked just then, it made Scarlett fear he hadโ€”every ounce of reason had left her eyes. Tellaโ€™s expression had turned dreamy in a way that said she was either in love or insane.

โ€œYou canโ€™t trust him,โ€ Scarlett blurted. โ€œHavenโ€™t you been listening to what Iโ€™ve said? Legend hates us. Heโ€™s a murderer!โ€

โ€œWho said anything about Legend?โ€ โ€œIsnโ€™t that who you were talking about?โ€

Tella made a funny face. โ€œIโ€™ve never even met him.โ€ โ€œBut youโ€™ve been up in this tower. His tower.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ Tella said. โ€œAnd you have no idea how vexing itโ€™s been watching everyone down below, while Iโ€™ve been stuck up here.โ€ With a huff, she cast her gaze over the rimless balcony.

They were a good twelve feet away from the edge, but Scarlett did not feel safe. It would still be far too easy to jump. Tella might not have been seduced by Legend, but knowing the master of Caraval had placed both Dante and Julian in Scarlettโ€™s path, she could not imagine Tellaโ€™s new suitor was any differentโ€”the perfect boy to drive her mad.

โ€œWhatโ€™s his name?โ€ Scarlett asked.

โ€œDaniel DeEngl,โ€ Tella announced. โ€œHeโ€™s a bastard lord from the Far Northern Empire. Isnโ€™t that terribly delicious? Youโ€™ll love it, Scar, they have castles up there, with moats and towers and all sorts of dramatic things.โ€

โ€œBut, if youโ€™ve been up here all this time, how did you ever meet?โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t up here thisย entireย time.โ€ Tellaโ€™s cheeks took on the faintest pink

blush and Scarlett recalled the manโ€™s voice sheโ€™d heard coming from Tellaโ€™s room after the end of that first night. โ€œI was with Daniel when I was abducted for the game. He actually tried to fight them off, but they just took him as well.โ€ She smiled as if it were the most romantic thing that had ever happened to her.

โ€œTella, this is wrong,โ€ Scarlett said. โ€œYou canโ€™t be in love with someone you just met.โ€

Tella flinched, the hue of her cheeks deepening into an angrier red. โ€œI know youโ€™ve been through a lot. So Iโ€™m not going to point out that you were going toย marryย someone youโ€™d never even met.โ€

โ€œThat was different.โ€

โ€œI know, because unlike you, I actually know my fiancรฉ.โ€ โ€œDid you sayย fiancรฉ?โ€

Tella nodded proudly.

โ€œYouโ€™re not serious,โ€ Scarlett said. โ€œWhen did he ask you to marry him?โ€ โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you happy for me?โ€ Tellaโ€™s expression fell, like a doll Scarlett

had dropped.

Scarlett bit back her first five responses.

โ€œScar, I know Iโ€™ve prayed for some awful things, the types of things angels donโ€™t do, but Iโ€™ve also prayed for something exactly like this. I might be able to get a boy to follow me into the barrel room, but until Daniel, no one had ever actually cared aboutย me.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure this Daniel person seems wonderful,โ€ Scarlett said carefully. โ€œAnd I want to be happy for you, I really do. But doesnโ€™t this seem a little coincidental? I keep thinking, maybe Legend is just playing a different game with you, and what if this Daniel is part of it?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not,โ€ Tella said. โ€œI know you donโ€™t have a lot of experience with men, but I do, and trust me when I say my relationship with Daniel is very real.โ€ Tella took a sharp step back, feet pale against the dark onyx floor as she plucked a silver bell from one of the cushioned lounges.

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Scarlett asked.

โ€œIโ€™m ringing for Daniel so you can meet him and see for yourself.โ€

The door opened and Jovan appeared, looking like a rainbow in the same colorful outfit sheโ€™d worn the first night, on the unicycle. โ€œOh, hello.โ€ She perked up when she saw Scarlett. โ€œYouโ€™ve finally found your sister.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t trust her,โ€ Scarlett whispered to Tella. โ€œShe works for Legend.โ€ โ€œOf course she works for Legend,โ€ Tella said. โ€œForgive my sister, Jo, sheโ€™s

still caught up in the game. She thinks Legend is out to kill us both.โ€

โ€œAre you certain sheโ€™s wrong?โ€ Jovan winked as if she was joking, but when her eyes cut to Scarlett her playfulness vanished.

โ€œDid you see that?โ€ Scarlett said. โ€œShe knows!โ€

Tella ignored her. โ€œCan you fetch Lord DeEngl for me, please?โ€

Before Scarlett could protest, Jovan nodded and disappeared the way sheโ€™d come, through a hidden door tucked into the back wall.

โ€œTella, please,โ€ Scarlett begged. โ€œWe need to get out of here. You have no idea how dangerous this is. Even if youโ€™re right about Daniel, itโ€™s still not safe. Legend wonโ€™t let you be together.โ€

Scarlett paused and held out her hands, showing her sister all the precious blood once more. โ€œSeeโ€”this?โ€ Her voice cracked. โ€œThis is real. Before I came up here, I watched Legend kill someoneโ€”โ€

โ€œOr you thought you did,โ€ Tella interrupted. โ€œWhatever you believe you saw, Iโ€™m sure it wasnโ€™t real. You keep forgetting, what happens down there is all part of the game. And Iโ€™m not running from Daniel because you got too caught up in it.โ€

Tellaโ€™s mouth formed a soft downward curve. โ€œI know no one loves me more than you do, Scar, Iโ€™d be desolate without you. Please, donโ€™t leave me now. And do not ask me to leave Daniel.โ€ Tellaโ€™s lips shifted into a deeper frown. โ€œDonโ€™t make me choose between the two loves of my life.โ€

Two loves.ย Scarlettโ€™s heart ached at her sisterโ€™s choice of words. Suddenly she was on the steps again, watching Julianโ€™s head fall before his breathing stopped. She needed to find a way to bring him back, but she also had to get her sister safely out of this tower and far away from this balcony.

โ€œNow,โ€ Tella said brightly, as if everything were settled, though Scarlett had not uttered a word. โ€œHelp me become beautiful for Lord Daniel!โ€ Tella

skipped off toward her dressing area. โ€œYou might want to clean up as well,โ€ she called. โ€œI have some gowns that would look stunning on you.โ€

The night grew even darker as Scarlett remained rooted in place.

She knew she looked halfway to dead, and she was tempted to keep it that way. She liked the idea of frightening Tellaโ€™s fiancรฉ. Scarlett liked the idea of leaving even moreโ€”but Tella was not the sort whoโ€™d run after Scarlett if she left. And what if Tella was right? Perhaps it was grandiose to assume the entire game revolved around the two of them. If her sister was correct, and Scarlett ruined this, Tella really would never forgive her.

But if Scarlett wasnโ€™t crazy, and Julian was really dead, then Scarlett needed to retrieve her wish and save him.

Behind Tellaโ€™s dressing curtain, one wardrobe and multiple trunks were opened, overflowing with an assortment of clothes. Scarlett watched as her sister debated between several gowns.

Hopefully after she met this Daniel person, Scarlett could figure out a way to convince Tella to leave with her. In the meantime she would stay by her side and discover a way to collect her wish from Legend.

โ€œThe periwinkle,โ€ Scarlett said. โ€œBlue is always the most becoming on you.โ€

โ€œI knew youโ€™d stay,โ€ Tella said. โ€œHere, this oneโ€™s for you, it will look so dramatic with your dark hair and that new little streak. Sorry, I donโ€™t have any slippers your size, youโ€™ll just have to let your boots dry.โ€ She gave Scarlett a cranberry dress with a frothy ball-gown skirt, longer in the back than in the front, and covered in teardrop-shaped red beads.

The dress matched the blood on Scarlettโ€™s palms. As Scarlett finally washed it away, she vowed to herself once more that sheโ€™d find a way to bring Julian back. No more wounds would stain her hands that night.

โ€œPromise me one thing,โ€ Scarlett said. โ€œWhatever happens, swear you wonโ€™t jump off any balconies.โ€

โ€œOnly if you promise me not to say strange things like that when Daniel arrives.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m being serious, Tella.โ€

โ€œSo am I. Please donโ€™t spoil thisโ€”โ€ A knock at the door.

โ€œThat must be Daniel.โ€ Tella slid into a pair of silver slippers before spinning around in her periwinkle dress. The color of sweet dreams and happy endings.

โ€œYou look beautiful,โ€ Scarlett said. But even as she dared to hope her sister was the one whoโ€™d been right all along, Scarlett could not ignore the bitter yellow puddle of dread in her stomach as Tella swept out from behind the dressing curtain and toward the hidden door against the back wall.

The world swayed as Tella opened it, everything tilting as Scarlett watched the man on the other side reach around her sisterโ€™s waist and reel her in for a kiss.

Two spots of pink colored Tellaโ€™s cheeks as she pulled away. โ€œDaniel, we have company.โ€ Tella drew the man she called Daniel back toward the cushioned lounges where Scarlett stood, immobile.

โ€œIโ€™d like you to meet my sister, Scarlett.โ€ Tella beamed again, so brightly, she didnโ€™t notice the way Scarlett had involuntarily taken a step back, or how the young man at her side ran his tongue over his lips when Tella wasnโ€™t looking.

โ€œDonatella, step away from him,โ€ Scarlett said. โ€œHis name is not Daniel.โ€
