Wonder

At lunch the next day, Summer asked me what I was going to be for Halloween. Of course, Iโ€™d been thinking about it since last Halloween, so I knew right away.

โ€œBoba Fett.โ€

โ€œYou know you can wear a costume to school on Halloween, right?โ€ โ€œNo way, really?โ€

โ€œSo long as itโ€™s politically correct.โ€ โ€œWhat, like no guns and stuff?โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€

โ€œWhat about blasters?โ€

โ€œI think a blasterโ€™s like a gun, Auggie.โ€

โ€œOh man โ€ฆ,โ€ I said, shaking my head. Boba Fett has a blaster.

โ€œAt least, we donโ€™t have to come like a character in a book anymore. In the lower school thatโ€™s what you had to do. Last year I was the Wicked Witch of the West fromย The Wizard of Oz.โ€

โ€œBut thatโ€™s a movie, not a book.โ€

โ€œHello?โ€ Summer answered. โ€œIt was a book first! One of my favorite books in the world, actually. My dad used to read it to me every night in the first grade.โ€

When Summer talks, especially when sheโ€™s excited about something, her eyes squint like sheโ€™s looking right at the sun.

I hardly ever see Summer during the day, since the only class we have together is English. But ever since that first lunch at school, weโ€™ve sat at the summer table together every day, just the two of us.

โ€œSo, what are you going to be?โ€ I asked her.

โ€œI donโ€™t know yet. I know what Iโ€™d really want to go as, but I think it might be too dorky. You know, Savannaโ€™s group isnโ€™t even wearing costumes this year. They think weโ€™re too old for Halloween.โ€

โ€œWhat? Thatโ€™s just dumb.โ€ โ€œI know, right?โ€

โ€œI thought you didnโ€™t care what those girls think.โ€ She shrugged and took a long drink of her milk.

โ€œSo, what dorky thing do you want to dress up as?โ€ I asked her, smiling.

โ€œPromise not to laugh?โ€ She raised her eyebrows and her shoulders, embarrassed. โ€œA unicorn.โ€

I smiled and looked down at my sandwich. โ€œHey, you promised not to laugh!โ€ she laughed.

โ€œOkay, okay,โ€ I said. โ€œBut youโ€™re right: that is too dorky.โ€

โ€œI know!โ€ she said. โ€œBut I have it all planned out: Iโ€™d make the head out of papier-mรขchรฉ, and paint the horn gold and make the mane gold, too.โ€ฆ It would be so awesome.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ I shrugged. โ€œThen you should do it. Who cares what other people think, right?โ€

โ€œMaybe what Iโ€™ll do is just wear it for the Halloween Parade,โ€ she said, snapping her fingers. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll just be, like, a Goth girl for school. Yeah, thatโ€™s it, thatโ€™s what Iโ€™ll do.โ€

โ€œSounds like a plan.โ€ I nodded.

โ€œThanks, Auggie,โ€ she giggled. โ€œYou know, thatโ€™s what I like best about you. I feel like I can tell you anything.โ€

โ€œYeah?โ€ I answered, nodding. I gave her a thumbs-up sign. โ€œCool beans.โ€
