I donโt move.
โIโm going to let go of you, okay? I want you to take my hand.โ
I reach out without looking down and feel our gloved hands fit together.
Kenji lets go of my face.
โYou are such anย idiot,โ he says to me, but Iโm still staring at Warner.
Warner whoโs now looking around like heโs just seen a ghost, blinking and rubbing his eyes like heโs confused, glancing at the dog like maybe the little animal managed to bewitch him. He grabs a tight hold of his blond hair, mussing it out of its perfect state, and stalks off so fast my eyes donโt know how to follow him.
โWhat the hell is wrong with you?โ Kenji is saying to me. โAre you even listening to me? Are youย insane?โ
โWhat did you just do? Why didnโt heโoh my God,โ I gasp, sparing a look at my own body.
Iโm completely invisible.
โYouโre welcome,โ Kenji snaps, dragging me away from the compound. โAnd keep your voice down. Being invisible doesnโt mean the world canโt hear you.โ
โYou canย doย that?โ I try to find his face but I might as well be speaking to the air.
โYeahโitโs called projecting, remember? Didnโt Castle explain this to you already?โ he asks, eager to rush through the explanation so he can get back to yelling at me. โNot everyone can do itโnot all abilities are the sameโbut maybe if you manage to stop being aย dumbassย long enough not toย die, I might be able to teach you one day.โ
โYou came back for me,โ I say to him, struggling to keep up with his brisk pace and not at all offended by his anger. โWhyโd you come back for me?โ
โBecause youโre aย dumbass,โ he says again. โI know. Iโm so sorry. I couldnโt help it.โ
โWell, help it,โ he says, his voice gruff as he yanks me by the arm. โWeโre going to have to run to recover all the time you just wasted.โ
โWhyโd you come back, Kenji?โ I ask again, undeterred. โHowโd you know I was still here?โ
โI was watching you,โ he says.
โWhat? What do youโโ
โI watch you,โ he says, his words rushing out again, impatient. โItโs part of what I do. Itโs what Iโve been doing since day one. I enlisted in Warnerโs army for you and only you. Itโs what Castle sent me for. You were my job.โ His voice is clipped, fast, unfeeling. โI already told you this.โ
โWait, what do you mean, youย watchย me?โ I hesitate, tugging on his invisible arm to slow him down a little. โYou follow me around everywhere? Even now? Even at Omega Point?โ
He doesnโt answer right away. When he does, his words are reluctant. โSort of.โ
โBut why? Iโm here. Your job is done, isnโt it?โ
โWeโve already had this conversation,โ he says. โRemember? Castle wanted me to make sure you were okay. He told me to keep an eye on youโ nothing seriousโjust, you know, make sure you werenโt having any psychotic breakdowns or anything.โ I hear him sigh. โYouโve been through a lot. Heโs a little worried about you. Especially nowโafter what just happened? You donโt look okay. You look like you want to throw yourself in front of a tank.โ
โI would never do something like that,โ I say to him.
โYeah,โ he says. โFine. Whatever. Iโm just pointing out the obvious. You only function on two settings: youโre either moping or youโre making out with Adamโand I have to say, I kind of prefer the mopingโโ
โKenji!โ I nearly yank my hand out of his. His grip tightens around my fingers.
โDonโt let go,โ he snaps at me again. โYou canโt let go or it breaks the connection.โ Kenji is dragging me through the middle of a clearing. Weโre far enough from the compounds now that we wonโt be overheard, but weโre still too far from the drop-off to be considered safe just yet. Luckily the snow isnโt sticking enough for us to leave tracks.
โI canโt believe you spied on us!โ
โI was notย spyingย on you, okay? Damn. Calm down. Hell, both of you need to calm down. Adam was already all up in my face about itโโ
โWhat?โ I feel the pieces of this puzzle finally beginning to fit together. โIs that why he was being mean to you at breakfast last week?โ
Kenji slows our pace a little. He takes a deep, long breath. โHe thought I was, like, takingย advantageย of the situation.โ He saysย advantageย like itโs a strange, dirty word. โHe thinks I get invisible just to see you naked or something. ListenโI donโt even know, okay? He was being an idiot about it. Iโm just doing my job.โ
โButโyouโre not, right? Youโre not trying to see me naked or anything?โ
Kenji snorts, chokes on his laughter. โListen, Juliette,โ he says through another laugh, โIโm not blind, okay? On a purely physical level? Yeah, youโre pretty s*xyโand that suit you have to wear all the time doesnโt hurt. But even if you didnโt have that whole โI kill you if I touch youโ thing going on, you areย definitelyย not my type. And more importantly, Iโm not some perverted asshole,โ he says. โI take my job seriously. I get real shit done in this world, and I like to think people respect me for it. But your boy Adam is a little too blinded by his pants to think straight. Maybe you should do something about that.โ
I drop my eyes. Say nothing for a moment. Then: โI donโt think youโll have to worry about that anymore.โ
โAh, shit.โ Kenji sighs, like he canโt believe he got stuck listening to problems about my love life. โI just walked right into that, didnโt I?โ
โWe can go, Kenji. We donโt have to talk about this.โ
An irritated breath. โItโs not that I donโtย careย about what youโre going through,โ he says. โItโs not like I want to see you all depressed or whatever. Itโs just that this life is messed up enough as it is,โ he says. โAnd Iโm sick of you being so caught up in your own little world all the time. You act like this whole thingโeverything we doโis a joke. You donโt take any of it seriously
โโ
โWhat?โ I cut him off. โThatโs not trueโI do take this seriouslyโโ โBullshit.โ He laughs a short, sharp, angry laugh. โAll you do is sit around
and think about yourย feelings. Youโve gotย problems. Boo-freaking-hoo,โ he
says. โYour parents hate you and itโs so hard but you have to wear gloves for the rest of your life because you kill people when you touch them. Whoย givesย a shit?โ Heโs breathing hard enough for me to hear him. โAs far as I can tell, youโve got food in your mouth and clothes on your back and a place to pee in peace whenever you feel like it. Those arenโt problems. Thatโs called living like a king. And Iโd really appreciate it if youโd grow the hell up and stop walking around like the world crapped on your only roll of toilet paper.
Because itโs stupid,โ he says, barely reining in his temper. โItโs stupid, and itโs ungrateful. You donโt have a clue what everyone else in the world is going through right now. You donโt have a clue, Juliette. And you donโt seem to give a damn, either.โ
I swallow, so hard.
โNow I amย trying,โ he says, โto give you a chance to fix things. I keep giving you opportunities to do things differently. To see past the sad little girl you used to beโthe sad little girl you keep clinging toโand stand up for yourself. Stop crying. Stop sitting in the dark counting out all your individual feelings about how sad and lonely you are. Wake up,โ he says. โYouโre not
the only person in this world who doesnโt want to get out of bed in the morning. Youโre not the only one with daddy issues and severely screwed-up DNA. You can be whoever the hell you want to be now. Youโre not with your shitty parents anymore. Youโre not in that shitty asylum, and youโre no longer stuck being Warnerโs shitty little experiment. So make a choice,โ he says. โMake a choice and stop wasting everyoneโs time. Stop wasting your own time. Okay?โ
Shame is pooling in every inch of my body.
Heat has flamed its way up my core, singeing me from the inside out. Iโm so horrified, so terrified to hear the truth in his words.
โLetโs go,โ he says, but his voice is just a tiny bit gentler. โWe have to run.โ And I nod even though he canโt see me.
I nod and nod and nod and Iโm so happy no one can see my face right now.
