Chapter no 21

Unravel Me (Shatter Me Book 2)

I donโ€™t move.

โ€œIโ€™m going to let go of you, okay? I want you to take my hand.โ€

I reach out without looking down and feel our gloved hands fit together.

Kenji lets go of my face.

โ€œYou are such anย idiot,โ€ he says to me, but Iโ€™m still staring at Warner.

Warner whoโ€™s now looking around like heโ€™s just seen a ghost, blinking and rubbing his eyes like heโ€™s confused, glancing at the dog like maybe the little animal managed to bewitch him. He grabs a tight hold of his blond hair, mussing it out of its perfect state, and stalks off so fast my eyes donโ€™t know how to follow him.

โ€œWhat the hell is wrong with you?โ€ Kenji is saying to me. โ€œAre you even listening to me? Are youย insane?โ€

โ€œWhat did you just do? Why didnโ€™t heโ€”oh my God,โ€ I gasp, sparing a look at my own body.

Iโ€™m completely invisible.

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome,โ€ Kenji snaps, dragging me away from the compound. โ€œAnd keep your voice down. Being invisible doesnโ€™t mean the world canโ€™t hear you.โ€

โ€œYou canย doย that?โ€ I try to find his face but I might as well be speaking to the air.

โ€œYeahโ€”itโ€™s called projecting, remember? Didnโ€™t Castle explain this to you already?โ€ he asks, eager to rush through the explanation so he can get back to yelling at me. โ€œNot everyone can do itโ€”not all abilities are the sameโ€”but maybe if you manage to stop being aย dumbassย long enough not toย die, I might be able to teach you one day.โ€

โ€œYou came back for me,โ€ I say to him, struggling to keep up with his brisk pace and not at all offended by his anger. โ€œWhyโ€™d you come back for me?โ€

โ€œBecause youโ€™re aย dumbass,โ€ he says again. โ€œI know. Iโ€™m so sorry. I couldnโ€™t help it.โ€

โ€œWell, help it,โ€ he says, his voice gruff as he yanks me by the arm. โ€œWeโ€™re going to have to run to recover all the time you just wasted.โ€

โ€œWhyโ€™d you come back, Kenji?โ€ I ask again, undeterred. โ€œHowโ€™d you know I was still here?โ€

โ€œI was watching you,โ€ he says.

โ€œWhat? What do youโ€”โ€

โ€œI watch you,โ€ he says, his words rushing out again, impatient. โ€œItโ€™s part of what I do. Itโ€™s what Iโ€™ve been doing since day one. I enlisted in Warnerโ€™s army for you and only you. Itโ€™s what Castle sent me for. You were my job.โ€ His voice is clipped, fast, unfeeling. โ€œI already told you this.โ€

โ€œWait, what do you mean, youย watchย me?โ€ I hesitate, tugging on his invisible arm to slow him down a little. โ€œYou follow me around everywhere? Even now? Even at Omega Point?โ€

He doesnโ€™t answer right away. When he does, his words are reluctant. โ€œSort of.โ€

โ€œBut why? Iโ€™m here. Your job is done, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve already had this conversation,โ€ he says. โ€œRemember? Castle wanted me to make sure you were okay. He told me to keep an eye on youโ€” nothing seriousโ€”just, you know, make sure you werenโ€™t having any psychotic breakdowns or anything.โ€ I hear him sigh. โ€œYouโ€™ve been through a lot. Heโ€™s a little worried about you. Especially nowโ€”after what just happened? You donโ€™t look okay. You look like you want to throw yourself in front of a tank.โ€

โ€œI would never do something like that,โ€ I say to him.

โ€œYeah,โ€ he says. โ€œFine. Whatever. Iโ€™m just pointing out the obvious. You only function on two settings: youโ€™re either moping or youโ€™re making out with Adamโ€”and I have to say, I kind of prefer the mopingโ€”โ€

โ€œKenji!โ€ I nearly yank my hand out of his. His grip tightens around my fingers.

โ€œDonโ€™t let go,โ€ he snaps at me again. โ€œYou canโ€™t let go or it breaks the connection.โ€ Kenji is dragging me through the middle of a clearing. Weโ€™re far enough from the compounds now that we wonโ€™t be overheard, but weโ€™re still too far from the drop-off to be considered safe just yet. Luckily the snow isnโ€™t sticking enough for us to leave tracks.

โ€œI canโ€™t believe you spied on us!โ€

โ€œI was notย spyingย on you, okay? Damn. Calm down. Hell, both of you need to calm down. Adam was already all up in my face about itโ€”โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I feel the pieces of this puzzle finally beginning to fit together. โ€œIs that why he was being mean to you at breakfast last week?โ€

Kenji slows our pace a little. He takes a deep, long breath. โ€œHe thought I was, like, takingย advantageย of the situation.โ€ He saysย advantageย like itโ€™s a strange, dirty word. โ€œHe thinks I get invisible just to see you naked or something. Listenโ€”I donโ€™t even know, okay? He was being an idiot about it. Iโ€™m just doing my job.โ€

โ€œButโ€”youโ€™re not, right? Youโ€™re not trying to see me naked or anything?โ€

Kenji snorts, chokes on his laughter. โ€œListen, Juliette,โ€ he says through another laugh, โ€œIโ€™m not blind, okay? On a purely physical level? Yeah, youโ€™re pretty s*xyโ€”and that suit you have to wear all the time doesnโ€™t hurt. But even if you didnโ€™t have that whole โ€˜I kill you if I touch youโ€™ thing going on, you areย definitelyย not my type. And more importantly, Iโ€™m not some perverted asshole,โ€ he says. โ€œI take my job seriously. I get real shit done in this world, and I like to think people respect me for it. But your boy Adam is a little too blinded by his pants to think straight. Maybe you should do something about that.โ€

I drop my eyes. Say nothing for a moment. Then: โ€œI donโ€™t think youโ€™ll have to worry about that anymore.โ€

โ€œAh, shit.โ€ Kenji sighs, like he canโ€™t believe he got stuck listening to problems about my love life. โ€œI just walked right into that, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œWe can go, Kenji. We donโ€™t have to talk about this.โ€

An irritated breath. โ€œItโ€™s not that I donโ€™tย careย about what youโ€™re going through,โ€ he says. โ€œItโ€™s not like I want to see you all depressed or whatever. Itโ€™s just that this life is messed up enough as it is,โ€ he says. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m sick of you being so caught up in your own little world all the time. You act like this whole thingโ€”everything we doโ€”is a joke. You donโ€™t take any of it seriously

โ€”โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I cut him off. โ€œThatโ€™s not trueโ€”I do take this seriouslyโ€”โ€ โ€œBullshit.โ€ He laughs a short, sharp, angry laugh. โ€œAll you do is sit around

and think about yourย feelings. Youโ€™ve gotย problems. Boo-freaking-hoo,โ€ he

says. โ€œYour parents hate you and itโ€™s so hard but you have to wear gloves for the rest of your life because you kill people when you touch them. Whoย givesย a shit?โ€ Heโ€™s breathing hard enough for me to hear him. โ€œAs far as I can tell, youโ€™ve got food in your mouth and clothes on your back and a place to pee in peace whenever you feel like it. Those arenโ€™t problems. Thatโ€™s called living like a king. And Iโ€™d really appreciate it if youโ€™d grow the hell up and stop walking around like the world crapped on your only roll of toilet paper.

Because itโ€™s stupid,โ€ he says, barely reining in his temper. โ€œItโ€™s stupid, and itโ€™s ungrateful. You donโ€™t have a clue what everyone else in the world is going through right now. You donโ€™t have a clue, Juliette. And you donโ€™t seem to give a damn, either.โ€

I swallow, so hard.

โ€œNow I amย trying,โ€ he says, โ€œto give you a chance to fix things. I keep giving you opportunities to do things differently. To see past the sad little girl you used to beโ€”the sad little girl you keep clinging toโ€”and stand up for yourself. Stop crying. Stop sitting in the dark counting out all your individual feelings about how sad and lonely you are. Wake up,โ€ he says. โ€œYouโ€™re not

the only person in this world who doesnโ€™t want to get out of bed in the morning. Youโ€™re not the only one with daddy issues and severely screwed-up DNA. You can be whoever the hell you want to be now. Youโ€™re not with your shitty parents anymore. Youโ€™re not in that shitty asylum, and youโ€™re no longer stuck being Warnerโ€™s shitty little experiment. So make a choice,โ€ he says. โ€œMake a choice and stop wasting everyoneโ€™s time. Stop wasting your own time. Okay?โ€

Shame is pooling in every inch of my body.

Heat has flamed its way up my core, singeing me from the inside out. Iโ€™m so horrified, so terrified to hear the truth in his words.

โ€œLetโ€™s go,โ€ he says, but his voice is just a tiny bit gentler. โ€œWe have to run.โ€ And I nod even though he canโ€™t see me.

I nod and nod and nod and Iโ€™m so happy no one can see my face right now.
