Chapter no 12

Unravel Me (Shatter Me Book 2)

โ€œLetโ€™s get you back into your suit,โ€ Sara says to me.

The air down here is cool and cold and often damp, the winter winds relentless as they whip the world above our heads into submission. Even in my suit I feel the chill, especially early in the morning, especially right now. Sonya and Sara are helping me out of this hospital dress and back into my normal uniform and Iโ€™m shaking in my skin. Only once theyโ€™ve zipped me up does the material begin to react to my body temperature, but Iโ€™m still so weak from being in bed for so long that Iโ€™m struggling to stay upright.

โ€œI really donโ€™t need a wheelchair,โ€ I tell Sara for the third time. โ€œThank you

โ€”reallyโ€”I-I appreciate it,โ€ I stammer, โ€œbut I need to get the blood flowing in my legs. I have to be strong on my feet.โ€ I have to be strong, period.

Castle and Adam are waiting for me in my room.

Sonya told me that while I was talking to Kenji, she and Sara went to notify Castle that I was awake. So. Now theyโ€™re there. Waiting for me. In the room I share with Sonya and Sara. And Iโ€™m so afraid of what is about to happen that Iโ€™m worried I might conveniently forget how to get to my own room. Because Iโ€™m fairly certain that whatever Iโ€™m about to hear isnโ€™t going to be good.

โ€œYou canโ€™t walk back to the room by yourself,โ€ Sara is saying. โ€œYou can hardly stand on your ownโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m okay,โ€ I insist. I try to smile. โ€œReally, I should be able to manage as long as I can stay close to the wall. Iโ€™m sure Iโ€™ll be back to normal just as soon as I start moving.โ€

Sonya and Sara glance at each other before scrutinizing my face. โ€œHowโ€™s your hand?โ€ they ask at the same time.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ I tell them, this time more earnestly. โ€œIt feels a lot better.

Really. Thank you so much.โ€

The cuts are practically healed and I can actually move my fingers now. I inspect the brand-new, thinner bandage theyโ€™ve wrapped across my knuckles. The girls explained to me that most of the damage was internal; it seems I traumatized whatever invisible bone in my body is responsible for myย curseย โ€œgift.โ€

โ€œAll right. Letโ€™s go,โ€ Sara says, shaking her head. โ€œWeโ€™re walking you back to the room.โ€

โ€œNoโ€”pleaseโ€”itโ€™s okayโ€”โ€ I try to protest but theyโ€™re already grabbing my arms and Iโ€™m too feeble to fight back. โ€œThis is unnecessaryโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re being ridiculous,โ€ they chorus.

โ€œI donโ€™t want you to have to go through the troubleโ€”โ€ โ€œYouโ€™re being ridiculous,โ€ they chorus again.

โ€œIโ€”Iโ€™m really notโ€”โ€ But theyโ€™re already leading me out of the room and down the hall and Iโ€™m hobbling along between them. โ€œI promise Iโ€™m fine,โ€ I tell them. โ€œReally.โ€

Sonya and Sara share a loaded look before they smile at me, not unkindly, but thereโ€™s an awkward silence between us as we move through the halls. I spot people walking past us and immediately duck my head. I donโ€™t want to make eye contact with anyone right now. I canโ€™t even imagine what they mustโ€™ve heard about the damage Iโ€™ve caused. I know Iโ€™ve managed to confirm all of their worst fears about me.

โ€œTheyโ€™re only afraid of you because they donโ€™t know you,โ€ Sara says quietly.

โ€œReally,โ€ Sonya adds. โ€œWe barely know you and we think youโ€™re great.โ€

Iโ€™m blushing fiercely, wondering why embarrassment always feels like ice water in my veins. Itโ€™s like all of my insides are freezing even though my skin is burning hot too hot.

Iย hateย this.

Iย hateย this feeling.

Sonya and Sara stop abruptly. โ€œHere we are,โ€ they say together.

Weโ€™re in front of our bedroom door. I try to unlatch myself from their arms but they stop me. Insist on staying with me until theyโ€™re sure Iโ€™ve gotten inside okay.

So I stay with them.

And I knock on my own door, because Iโ€™m not sure what else to do. Once.

Twice.

Iโ€™m waiting just a few seconds, just a few moments for fate to answer when I realize the full impact of Sonyaโ€™s and Saraโ€™s presence beside me. Theyโ€™re offering me smiles that are supposed to be encouraging, bracing, reinforcing. Theyโ€™re trying to lend me their strength because they know Iโ€™m about to face something that isnโ€™t going to make me happy.

And this thought makes me happy. If only for a fleeting moment.

Because I think wow, I imagine this is what itโ€™s like to have friends. โ€œMs. Ferrars.โ€

Castle opens the door just enough for me to see his face. He nods at me.

Glances down at my injured hand. Back up at my face. โ€œVery good,โ€ he says, mostly to himself. โ€œGood, good. Iโ€™m happy to see youโ€™re doing better.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I manage to say. โ€œIโ€”th-thank you, Iโ€”โ€

โ€œGirls,โ€ he says to Sonya and Sara. He offers them a bright, genuine smile. โ€œThank you for all youโ€™ve done. Iโ€™ll take it from here.โ€

They nod. Squeeze my arms once before letting go and I sway for just a second before I find my footing. โ€œIโ€™m all right,โ€ I tell them as they try to reach for me. โ€œIโ€™ll be fine.โ€

They nod again. Wave, just a little, as they back away. โ€œCome inside,โ€ Castle says to me.

I follow him in.
