Chapter no 10 – โ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€Œโ€ŒThe Performance Spaceโ€Œ

Wonder

Charlotte basically didnโ€™t stop talking as we headed down to the second floor. She was describing the play they had put on last year, which wasย Oliver!ย She played Oliver even though sheโ€™s a girl. As she said this, she pushed open the double doors to a huge auditorium. At the other end of the room was a stage.

Charlotte started skipping toward the stage. Julian ran after her, and then turned around halfway down the aisle.

โ€œCome on!โ€ he said loudly, waving for me to follow him, which I did.

โ€œThere were like hundreds of people in the audience that night,โ€ said Charlotte, and it took me a second to realize she was still talking aboutย Oliver!ย โ€œI was so, so nervous. I had so many lines, and I had all these songs to sing. It was so, so, so, so hard!โ€ Although she was talking to me, she really didnโ€™t look at me much. โ€œOn opening night, my parents were all the way in back of the auditorium, like where Jack is right now, but when the lights are off, you canโ€™t really see that far back. So I was like, โ€˜Where are my parents? Where are my parents?โ€™ And then Mr. Resnick, our theater-arts teacher last yearโ€”he said: โ€˜Charlotte, stop being such a diva!โ€™ And I was like, โ€˜Okay!โ€™ And then I spotted my parents and I was totally fine. I didnโ€™t forget a single line.โ€

While she was talking, I noticed Julian staring at me out of the corner of his eye. This is something I see people do a lot with me. They think I donโ€™t know theyโ€™re staring, but I can tell from the way their heads are tilted. I turned around to see where Jack had gone to. He had stayed in the back of the auditorium, like he was bored.

โ€œWe put on a play every year,โ€ said Charlotte.

โ€œI donโ€™t think heโ€™s going to want to be in the school play, Charlotte,โ€ said Julian sarcastically.

โ€œYou can be in the play without actually being โ€˜inโ€™ the play,โ€ Charlotte answered, looking at me. โ€œYou can do the lighting. You can paint the backdrops.โ€

โ€œOh yeah, whoopee,โ€ said Julian, twirling his finger in the air.

โ€œBut you donโ€™t have to take the theater-arts elective if you donโ€™t want to,โ€ Charlotte said, shrugging. โ€œThereโ€™s dance or chorus or band. Thereโ€™s leadership.โ€

โ€œOnly dorks take leadership,โ€ Julian interrupted.

โ€œJulian, youโ€™re being so obnoxious!โ€ said Charlotte, which made Julian laugh.

โ€œIโ€™m taking the science elective,โ€ I said. โ€œCool!โ€ said Charlotte.

Julian looked directly at me. โ€œThe science elective is supposably the hardest elective of all,โ€ he said. โ€œNo offense, but if youโ€™ve never,ย everย been in a school before, why do you think youโ€™re suddenly going to be smart enough to take the science elective? I mean, have you ever even studied science before? Like real science, not like the kind you do in kits?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded.

โ€œHe was homeschooled, Julian!โ€ said Charlotte.

โ€œSo teachers came to his house?โ€ asked Julian, looking puzzled. โ€œNo, his mother taught him!โ€ answered Charlotte.

โ€œIs she a teacher?โ€ Julian said.

โ€œIs your mother a teacher?โ€ Charlotte asked me. โ€œNo,โ€ I said.

โ€œSo sheโ€™s not a real teacher!โ€ said Julian, as if that proved his point. โ€œThatโ€™s what I mean. How can someone whoโ€™s not a real teacher actually teach science?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure youโ€™ll do fine,โ€ said Charlotte, looking at me.

โ€œLetโ€™s just go to the library now,โ€ Jack called out, sounding really bored.

โ€œWhy is your hair so long?โ€ Julian said to me. He sounded like he was annoyed.

I didnโ€™t know what to say, so I just shrugged. โ€œCan I ask you a question?โ€ he said.

I shrugged again. Didnโ€™t he just ask me a question?

โ€œWhatโ€™s the deal with your face? I mean, were you in a fire or something?โ€

โ€œJulian, thatโ€™s so rude!โ€ said Charlotte.

โ€œIโ€™m not being rude,โ€ said Julian, โ€œIโ€™m just asking a question. Mr.

Tushman said we could ask questions if we wanted to.โ€

โ€œNot rude questions like that,โ€ said Charlotte. โ€œBesides, he was born like that. Thatโ€™s what Mr. Tushman said. You just werenโ€™t listening.โ€

โ€œI was so listening!โ€ said Julian. โ€œI just thought maybe he was in a fire, too.โ€

โ€œGeez, Julian,โ€ said Jack. โ€œJust shut up.โ€ โ€œYou shut up!โ€ Julian yelled.

โ€œCome on, August,โ€ said Jack. โ€œLetโ€™s just go to the library already.โ€

I walked toward Jack and followed him out of the auditorium. He held the double doors open for me, and as I passed by, he looked at me right in the face, kind of daring me to look back at him, which I did. Then I actually smiled. I donโ€™t know. Sometimes when I have the feeling like Iโ€™m almost crying, it can turn into an almost-laughing feeling. And that must have been the feeling I was having then, because I smiled, almost like I was going to giggle. The thing is, because of the way my face is, people who donโ€™t know me very well donโ€™t always get that Iโ€™m smiling. My mouth doesnโ€™t go up at the corners the way other peopleโ€™s mouths do. It just goes straight across my face. But somehow Jack Will got that I had smiled at him. And he smiled back.

โ€œJulianโ€™s a jerk,โ€ he whispered before Julian and Charlotte reached us. โ€œBut, dude, youโ€™re gonna have to talk.โ€ He said this seriously, like he was trying to help me. I nodded as Julian and Charlotte caught up to us. We were all quiet for a second, all of us just kind of nodding, looking at the floor. Then I looked up at Julian.

โ€œThe wordโ€™s โ€˜supposedly,โ€™ by the way,โ€ I said. โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

โ€œYou said โ€˜supposablyโ€™ before,โ€ I said. โ€œI did not!โ€

โ€œYeah you did,โ€ Charlotte nodded. โ€œYou said the science elective is

supposablyย really hard. I heard you.โ€ โ€œI absolutely did not,โ€ he insisted.

โ€œWhatever,โ€ said Jack. โ€œLetโ€™s just go.โ€

โ€œYeah, letโ€™s just go,โ€ agreed Charlotte, following Jack down the stairs to the next floor. I started to follow her, but Julian cut right in front of me, which actually made me stumble backward.

โ€œOops, sorry about that!โ€ said Julian.

But I could tell from the way he looked at me that he wasnโ€™t really sorry at all.
