Chapter no 19

The Summer of Broken Rules

Michaelโ€™s groomsmen hosted a rehearsal dinner after-party at the Cabin with a bonfire, sโ€™mores, music, and plenty of beer and cigars, although I only stayed for a half hour or so. Long enough to watch Jake and Luli win a few rounds of cornhole but not long enough to get caught up in a conversation with Wit. Iโ€™d wanted to talk to him so badly at the Beach Plum, and now I justย didnโ€™t. Because what did it matter? Everything was ending.

I slipped away to the Camp to help my mom โ€œbabysitโ€ Hannah and Ethan. They were both asleep in their bunk room, the actual babysitter having put them to bed hours ago. Tomorrow, they would wake up to find out their baby brother had arrived.

My mom was sitting on the couch with me sprawled across her like a sad little girl. I still wore my coral dress, but my hair had come out of its updo, now loose and wavyโ€”she was running her fingers through it. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Mer?โ€ she asked when I sighed. โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you having fun with your friends and Wit?โ€

โ€œBecause things with Wit are shit,โ€ I mumbled. Neither of us laughed at the rhyme.

โ€œI told you it would be difficult,โ€ she said after a minute. โ€œSaying goodbye to him.โ€

I nodded, remembering the other night at the Annexโ€”admitting how much I liked Wit and that troubled look she gave me. โ€œBut itโ€™s not just

that,โ€ I murmured and rolled over so I was faceup on her lap. Our eyes found each other. โ€œHe met Claire,โ€ I said. โ€œWhen she visited Sarah and Michael in New Orleans. Heย metย her, and he never told me.โ€ My voice was thick. โ€œHe says he tried to a few times, but I interrupted him once, so he thought I knew but didnโ€™t want to talk about it. Mom, he kept the whole thing a secret. He lied.โ€

โ€œHow did you find out?โ€ my mom asked softly. โ€œIf he didnโ€™t tell you?โ€

โ€œAn old video on Sarahโ€™s Instagram,โ€ I said. โ€œIt was from that night at Basin. Claire was sitting across the table from Sarah, and guess who was sitting next to her?โ€ A lump formed in my throat.

She pulled me closer and gently wiped away my tears when they inevitably fell. โ€œYes, he shouldโ€™ve told you,โ€ she said. โ€œEspecially after how much time youโ€™ve spent together, how close youโ€™ve become.โ€ She kissed my forehead. โ€œI donโ€™t believe he lied, Mer, but yes, he also wasnโ€™t truthful. If he tried telling you but didnโ€™t, I think he wasโ€โ€”she pausedโ€”โ€œreading the tea leaves.โ€

Reading the tea leaves.

Anyone else would say โ€œreading the room,โ€ butย reading the tea leavesโ€” that was my sister. That was Claire.

My eyes spilled over again. โ€œI just miss her so much,โ€ I said. โ€œI miss her so much, Mom.โ€

โ€œOh, Meredith, I miss her, tooโ€”we all do. My heart aches every day.โ€ She touched her hand to my cheek. โ€œBut being here this week, itโ€™s ached a little less. As impossible as it might sound, I feel her presence. I feel her all around us.โ€

I thought about Claireโ€™s voice in my head this week, the hugs she gave me through the sunshine. โ€œSheโ€™s everywhere,โ€ I agreed, although that didnโ€™t stop my sobs. It mightโ€™ve worsened them, dredging up my Assassin elimination and its aftermath. โ€œIโ€™m so upset with Wit,โ€ I cried. โ€œAnd heโ€™s upset with me, too.โ€

My mom didnโ€™t say anything, waiting for me to explain.

โ€œWe made a deal right before Assassin started,โ€ I said. โ€œNot an alliance but a pact to feed each other information and tip the other person off if our names came up.โ€ I swallowed hard. โ€œI ended up inheriting him as a target, but I didnโ€™t say anything. I didnโ€™tย doย anything. I never went after him; I had this whole plan to get us to the end together.โ€ I paused. โ€œBut when he found out today, he was pissedโ€”reallyย pissed.โ€

Again, my mom didnโ€™t comment.

โ€œWhich is stupid, right?โ€ I asked, but my voice was weak. โ€œAssassin is all about secrets and deception. You lie to survive. I mean, I lied to Luli and myย actualย alliance. Iโ€™m not proud of it, but I did.โ€ I rubbed my forehead. โ€œWitโ€ฆhe plays like Claire. He should understand.โ€

โ€œYes, he should understand,โ€ my mom said. โ€œItโ€™s only a game, and there should be no hard feelings when it ends.โ€ She tucked a lock of my hair behind my ear. โ€œBut in this case, I donโ€™t think Wit could help it. His emotions got the better of him.โ€

My breath caught. โ€œWhat?โ€

She gave me a bittersweet smile. โ€œMer, your pact started out as strategy, but now I think it means more than either of you expected it to. You both know that.โ€

This time, it was me who didnโ€™t say anything. My heart was hammering.

โ€œIโ€™m very grateful to him,โ€ she added. โ€œHeโ€™s brought you back to us. The Farm and him. Youโ€™ve been in this sleepy haze this last year and a halfโ€”I know we all haveโ€”and I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve seen you so awake and alive since that awful day. When the two of you are togetherโ€ฆโ€ She shook her head. โ€œI think you should talk to him. If you part on poor terms, youโ€™ll regret it.โ€

I burrowed into her side. โ€œI canโ€™t talk to him.โ€ โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecauseโ€”โ€ I started, but I was cut off by my momโ€™s phone buzzing on the coffee table.

Tom, the screen said.

She answered the call and looked at me after they hung up a couple of minutes later. โ€œOliver Isaac Epstein-Fox,โ€ she announced with a smile. โ€œEight pounds, five ounces.โ€

I was just settling in for the night on the Annexโ€™s love seat when I heard the porch steps creaking outside. Not my parents, I knew. Aunt Julia was staying at the hospital, so they were going to sleep at the Camp with Ethan and Hannah.

โ€œHello?โ€ I said.

โ€œHey,โ€ someone said back.

I pushed away my quilt and took several steps over to the door. Wit stood outside. โ€œWhere have you been?โ€ he asked. โ€œI mustโ€™ve taken a hundred laps around the Cabin.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t there,โ€ I said. โ€œWell, I was for a little while, but then I went to babysit Ethan and Hannah with my mom.โ€

โ€œOh, gotcha.โ€

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I asked.

Wit raised his hand and rested it against the doorโ€™s screen. I instinctively did the same, our palms pressed together. โ€œBecause we never did it,โ€ he told me.

My eyebrows knitted together. โ€œNever did what?โ€ โ€œThe dare,โ€ he said. โ€œThe driveway dare.โ€

The driveway dare.

โ€œYou dared me on Monday, at Morning Glory. We agreed to do it sometime this week.โ€ He shrugged. โ€œBut tomorrow is the big day, soโ€ฆโ€

I dropped my hand.ย Tomorrow is the big day.ย Heโ€™d hit the nail on the head and on the heartโ€”that was why I couldnโ€™t do this. Crossed wires aside, our time together was rapidly dwindling, and I needed to be okay with that. I

didnโ€™t care if we still had the wedding tomorrowโ€”I needed to put space between usย now. โ€œSorry,โ€ I told him, faking a yawn, โ€œbut Iโ€™m about to go to bed.โ€

Silence.

โ€œPlease,โ€ Wit murmured. โ€œPlease, letโ€™s walk.โ€ He paused. โ€œLetโ€™s walk and talk.โ€

I laughed. Hollowly, but I laughed. โ€œOkay,โ€ I said, thinking of what my mom had said about Witโ€”how I would have no closure if I didnโ€™t talk to him. โ€œLetโ€™s walk.โ€ I lifted my hand and matched my palm to his for another moment. โ€œAnd talk.โ€

But for the first ten minutes of the walk, the only sound was our feet scuffing against the sandy dirt road and nighttime critters skittering away from our footsteps. We kept an easy pace, walking side by side without holding hands. If the backs of our fingers brushed, it was an accident. Neither of us spoke.

Until out of nowhere, Wit did. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™m sorry for not telling you about Claire. You were right. I had so many chances, but I was worried about overstepping and making you sad, and then as more time went by, I convinced myself that you probably figured Iโ€™d met her with Sarah and Michael.โ€

I sighed. โ€œI was really shaken when I saw that video, Wit,โ€ I said. Then, after a pause: โ€œBut Iโ€™ve been doing a lot of thinking, and itโ€™s okay.โ€

Because it was. Since leaving the Camp, Iโ€™d made peace with them having met, and in a way, it made me happy they had.ย I wish you couldโ€™ve met her. She wouldโ€™ve really liked you.

How many times had I said that this week? Iโ€™d lost count.

โ€œSarah talked about her for months before her visit,โ€ Wit said quietly. He chuckled. โ€œIt was like Taylor Swift was coming to town.โ€

I half smiled. Sarah was the most devoted of Swifties.

โ€œI spent Christmas in Vermont with my mom and stepdad,โ€ he continued in the darkness. โ€œBut I flew back to New Orleans for New Yearโ€™s. Sarah and Michael invited me to dinner with them at Basin. Well, more an instruction than an invitation. Iย hadย to meet the famous Claire.โ€

I took a breath, nervous to ask but needing to know. โ€œWhat did you think of her?โ€

Wit whistled. โ€œI thought she was extraordinary,โ€ he said. โ€œShe looked like Sarahโ€™s twin, of course, but Iโ€™m not making air quotes when I say she had a sparkling personality.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I nodded. โ€œThat was Claire. She dazzled.โ€ She just had no idea she dazzled, what big things awaited her.

My heart sank.

Had.

Big thingsย hadย awaited her.

I didnโ€™t think I would ever get used to that past tense. โ€œWhat did you guys talk about?โ€ I asked.

Witโ€™s fingers mingled with mine. โ€œWhat doย youย think we talked about?โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ I said. โ€œTulane?โ€

โ€œNo, Tulane didnโ€™t come up,โ€ Wit replied. โ€œWhile I was watching your sisterย notย eat her salad, she couldnโ€™t stop talking aboutย you.โ€

My stomach dropped. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œโ€˜You need to meet my sister,โ€™โ€ he said. โ€œโ€˜You would love her, Stephen. Sheโ€™s so many things, but really a combination of adorable and acerbic. All your jokes I only laughed at? Meredith wouldโ€™ve had killer comebacks instead. I bet you two could go back and forth for hours.โ€™โ€

I slowed my pace.

โ€œSmart,โ€ Wit went on. โ€œGoofy.โ€ He took a breath. โ€œDramatic. Midnight snacker. Loyal. Fantasy reader. Competitive. Deep sleeper. Fearless.โ€ He hooked a few fingers around mine.

The corners of my eyes stung. I hadnโ€™t felt like that girlโ€”Claireโ€™s sisterโ€” in a very long time, not until coming back to the Vineyard and meeting Wit. My voice cracked when I spoke. โ€œHow did she know your name was Stephen?โ€

โ€œShe guessed Wit was a nickname for Witry,โ€ he said. โ€œSo she asked what my first name was.โ€ He paused. โ€œWhy? Does it matter that Iโ€™m named Stephen?โ€

I stopped in my tracks. We mustโ€™ve walked only a mile out of three, but it was time. โ€œNo, it doesnโ€™t,โ€ I said, untangling my fingers from his. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing between me and Stephen.โ€

Wit didnโ€™t respond at first. โ€œIn what sense?โ€ he eventually asked. โ€œYou and the name? Or you and me? Us?โ€

I sighed. โ€œThe latter.โ€

The moon was shining bright enough that I saw Witโ€™s brows furrow. โ€œI donโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œThe weekโ€™s over, Wit,โ€ I said, swallowing hard. โ€œAnd when the wedding ends, the other things end, too.โ€

โ€œWait,โ€ he said. โ€œOther things?โ€

โ€œOurย thing,โ€ I said, gesturing between us. โ€œWhat weโ€™ve been doing for the past few days, acting likeโ€ฆโ€

#HitchMeToWitry, I thought.ย Acting like #HitchMeToWitry.

โ€œWell, why canโ€™t things continue?โ€ he asked. โ€œWhy canโ€™t we go beyond this?โ€

My pulse spiked. โ€œYou imagined going beyond this?โ€ He was quiet, then sighed. โ€œNot exactly.โ€

โ€œSee?โ€ I shook my head.

โ€œNo, no,โ€ he said quickly. โ€œI expected this week to go one way, but then it didnโ€™t, and I got caught up in the magicโ€”got caught up inย you. It sounds stupid, but I never considered that time was running out. This placeโ€ฆโ€ He trailed off to gaze up at the moon. โ€œItโ€™s one of those special places where

you feel like time doesnโ€™t exist. Where it will always be summer, where Iโ€™ll always wake up with you.โ€

My body began trembling. โ€œWell, thatโ€™s not how it works,โ€ I said. โ€œIt may feel that way, but itโ€™s an illusionโ€”a fantasy. This week will end. It will.โ€

Wit put his hands on my shoulders. โ€œWe donโ€™t have to,โ€ he said. โ€œWe can stay together.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ I backed away from him. โ€œYouโ€™re going to New Zealand! Youโ€™re going to the other side of the world for a wholeย year!โ€

โ€œAย schoolย year,โ€ he corrected. โ€œLate August to May, and we can do long distance.โ€

Long distance.

Everyone said it was difficult, and I applauded those couples who skillfully navigated itโ€ฆbut me? There was a reason why Claire hadnโ€™t said โ€œpatientโ€ when painting a picture of me to Wit. I wasย notย patient. The huge time difference, waiting for scheduled FaceTimes, or if we were lucky, a visitโ€”I would not be able to handle that. I would beย miserable. Ben and I had planned on staying together, and look how that had turned out! Heโ€™d changed his mind before weโ€™d even tried. Four years together, and he didnโ€™t have enough confidence in us.

โ€œWeโ€™d be long distance anyway,โ€ Wit was saying. โ€œEven if I was back at Tulane.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ I said. โ€œI canโ€™t do long distanceโ€”at least not a-whole-other-hemisphere long distance. It wouldnโ€™t be enough, Wit. It wouldnโ€™t work for me.โ€

The breeze rustled the tree branches, and I pretended I couldnโ€™t smell the skunk stench in the air. Hopefully all the dogs were inside for the night.

โ€œThen come with me,โ€ Wit said softly. โ€œCome to New Zealand.โ€ I snorted. โ€œYouโ€™re kidding.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not.โ€

A shiver ran up my spine.

โ€œWeโ€™ve had so many great adventures here,โ€ he said. โ€œLetโ€™s go on more together, so many more. Claire said youโ€™re fearless.โ€ His voice dropped to a murmur. โ€œAnd I think you need this as much as I do. I think youย needย something, something differentโ€ฆโ€ He trailed off. โ€œCome with me.โ€

I felt my throat begin to close. โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ I choked out. โ€œI canโ€™t. I have to start school. I have to meet my roommate, sign up for classes, make new friends, study, walk home for dinner once a week. I canโ€™t leave. No way.โ€

Wit didnโ€™t respond. We just stood there for a couple of minutes and then resumed walking down The Farm road. Even if the mood had plummeted, he was going to touch the Paqua obelisk. He was going to complete the dare.

And complete the dare we did. We did it in silence, but I tagged the cold stone and released a long, exhausted breath. If only we didnโ€™t have three miles back to the houses.

It was 2:00 a.m. by the time Wit walked me to the Annexโ€™s door. We awkwardly stood there for a moment, not quite sure what to do. โ€œGood night,โ€ I said at the same time he took my hand and said, โ€œOne more day.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked.

โ€œThereโ€™s one more good day,โ€ he said. โ€œThe week isnโ€™t over yet. We still have the wedding tomorrow.โ€ He squeezed my hand. โ€œLetโ€™s pretend.โ€

Pretend.

I knew what he was suggesting.ย Letโ€™s pretend that time doesnโ€™t exist. Letโ€™s pretend that this week isnโ€™t ending. Letโ€™s pretend that we will always be usโ€” happy, sunburnt, and tangled up together.

It would hurt. It wouldย reallyย hurt, but it would be wonderful, tooโ€”one last perfect day with him. โ€œAll right,โ€ I whispered, squeezing his hand back. โ€œWeโ€™ll pretend.โ€

* * *

Instead of curling up on the love seat, I walked through the sitting room and into the bunk room. The window was open, wisps of the Cabinโ€™s music and laughter spilling insideโ€”a lullaby of sorts. I smiled to myself and then slipped under Claireโ€™s covers and closed my eyes.
