Michaelโs groomsmen hosted a rehearsal dinner after-party at the Cabin with a bonfire, sโmores, music, and plenty of beer and cigars, although I only stayed for a half hour or so. Long enough to watch Jake and Luli win a few rounds of cornhole but not long enough to get caught up in a conversation with Wit. Iโd wanted to talk to him so badly at the Beach Plum, and now I justย didnโt. Because what did it matter? Everything was ending.
I slipped away to the Camp to help my mom โbabysitโ Hannah and Ethan. They were both asleep in their bunk room, the actual babysitter having put them to bed hours ago. Tomorrow, they would wake up to find out their baby brother had arrived.
My mom was sitting on the couch with me sprawled across her like a sad little girl. I still wore my coral dress, but my hair had come out of its updo, now loose and wavyโshe was running her fingers through it. โWhatโs wrong, Mer?โ she asked when I sighed. โWhy arenโt you having fun with your friends and Wit?โ
โBecause things with Wit are shit,โ I mumbled. Neither of us laughed at the rhyme.
โI told you it would be difficult,โ she said after a minute. โSaying goodbye to him.โ
I nodded, remembering the other night at the Annexโadmitting how much I liked Wit and that troubled look she gave me. โBut itโs not just
that,โ I murmured and rolled over so I was faceup on her lap. Our eyes found each other. โHe met Claire,โ I said. โWhen she visited Sarah and Michael in New Orleans. Heย metย her, and he never told me.โ My voice was thick. โHe says he tried to a few times, but I interrupted him once, so he thought I knew but didnโt want to talk about it. Mom, he kept the whole thing a secret. He lied.โ
โHow did you find out?โ my mom asked softly. โIf he didnโt tell you?โ
โAn old video on Sarahโs Instagram,โ I said. โIt was from that night at Basin. Claire was sitting across the table from Sarah, and guess who was sitting next to her?โ A lump formed in my throat.
She pulled me closer and gently wiped away my tears when they inevitably fell. โYes, he shouldโve told you,โ she said. โEspecially after how much time youโve spent together, how close youโve become.โ She kissed my forehead. โI donโt believe he lied, Mer, but yes, he also wasnโt truthful. If he tried telling you but didnโt, I think he wasโโshe pausedโโreading the tea leaves.โ
Reading the tea leaves.
Anyone else would say โreading the room,โ butย reading the tea leavesโ that was my sister. That was Claire.
My eyes spilled over again. โI just miss her so much,โ I said. โI miss her so much, Mom.โ
โOh, Meredith, I miss her, tooโwe all do. My heart aches every day.โ She touched her hand to my cheek. โBut being here this week, itโs ached a little less. As impossible as it might sound, I feel her presence. I feel her all around us.โ
I thought about Claireโs voice in my head this week, the hugs she gave me through the sunshine. โSheโs everywhere,โ I agreed, although that didnโt stop my sobs. It mightโve worsened them, dredging up my Assassin elimination and its aftermath. โIโm so upset with Wit,โ I cried. โAnd heโs upset with me, too.โ
My mom didnโt say anything, waiting for me to explain.
โWe made a deal right before Assassin started,โ I said. โNot an alliance but a pact to feed each other information and tip the other person off if our names came up.โ I swallowed hard. โI ended up inheriting him as a target, but I didnโt say anything. I didnโtย doย anything. I never went after him; I had this whole plan to get us to the end together.โ I paused. โBut when he found out today, he was pissedโreallyย pissed.โ
Again, my mom didnโt comment.
โWhich is stupid, right?โ I asked, but my voice was weak. โAssassin is all about secrets and deception. You lie to survive. I mean, I lied to Luli and myย actualย alliance. Iโm not proud of it, but I did.โ I rubbed my forehead. โWitโฆhe plays like Claire. He should understand.โ
โYes, he should understand,โ my mom said. โItโs only a game, and there should be no hard feelings when it ends.โ She tucked a lock of my hair behind my ear. โBut in this case, I donโt think Wit could help it. His emotions got the better of him.โ
My breath caught. โWhat?โ
She gave me a bittersweet smile. โMer, your pact started out as strategy, but now I think it means more than either of you expected it to. You both know that.โ
This time, it was me who didnโt say anything. My heart was hammering.
โIโm very grateful to him,โ she added. โHeโs brought you back to us. The Farm and him. Youโve been in this sleepy haze this last year and a halfโI know we all haveโand I donโt think Iโve seen you so awake and alive since that awful day. When the two of you are togetherโฆโ She shook her head. โI think you should talk to him. If you part on poor terms, youโll regret it.โ
I burrowed into her side. โI canโt talk to him.โ โWhy not?โ
โBecauseโโ I started, but I was cut off by my momโs phone buzzing on the coffee table.
Tom, the screen said.
She answered the call and looked at me after they hung up a couple of minutes later. โOliver Isaac Epstein-Fox,โ she announced with a smile. โEight pounds, five ounces.โ

I was just settling in for the night on the Annexโs love seat when I heard the porch steps creaking outside. Not my parents, I knew. Aunt Julia was staying at the hospital, so they were going to sleep at the Camp with Ethan and Hannah.
โHello?โ I said.
โHey,โ someone said back.
I pushed away my quilt and took several steps over to the door. Wit stood outside. โWhere have you been?โ he asked. โI mustโve taken a hundred laps around the Cabin.โ
โI wasnโt there,โ I said. โWell, I was for a little while, but then I went to babysit Ethan and Hannah with my mom.โ
โOh, gotcha.โ
โWhat are you doing here?โ I asked.
Wit raised his hand and rested it against the doorโs screen. I instinctively did the same, our palms pressed together. โBecause we never did it,โ he told me.
My eyebrows knitted together. โNever did what?โ โThe dare,โ he said. โThe driveway dare.โ
The driveway dare.
โYou dared me on Monday, at Morning Glory. We agreed to do it sometime this week.โ He shrugged. โBut tomorrow is the big day, soโฆโ
I dropped my hand.ย Tomorrow is the big day.ย Heโd hit the nail on the head and on the heartโthat was why I couldnโt do this. Crossed wires aside, our time together was rapidly dwindling, and I needed to be okay with that. I
didnโt care if we still had the wedding tomorrowโI needed to put space between usย now. โSorry,โ I told him, faking a yawn, โbut Iโm about to go to bed.โ
Silence.
โPlease,โ Wit murmured. โPlease, letโs walk.โ He paused. โLetโs walk and talk.โ
I laughed. Hollowly, but I laughed. โOkay,โ I said, thinking of what my mom had said about Witโhow I would have no closure if I didnโt talk to him. โLetโs walk.โ I lifted my hand and matched my palm to his for another moment. โAnd talk.โ
But for the first ten minutes of the walk, the only sound was our feet scuffing against the sandy dirt road and nighttime critters skittering away from our footsteps. We kept an easy pace, walking side by side without holding hands. If the backs of our fingers brushed, it was an accident. Neither of us spoke.
Until out of nowhere, Wit did. โIโm sorry,โ he said. โIโm sorry for not telling you about Claire. You were right. I had so many chances, but I was worried about overstepping and making you sad, and then as more time went by, I convinced myself that you probably figured Iโd met her with Sarah and Michael.โ
I sighed. โI was really shaken when I saw that video, Wit,โ I said. Then, after a pause: โBut Iโve been doing a lot of thinking, and itโs okay.โ
Because it was. Since leaving the Camp, Iโd made peace with them having met, and in a way, it made me happy they had.ย I wish you couldโve met her. She wouldโve really liked you.
How many times had I said that this week? Iโd lost count.
โSarah talked about her for months before her visit,โ Wit said quietly. He chuckled. โIt was like Taylor Swift was coming to town.โ
I half smiled. Sarah was the most devoted of Swifties.
โI spent Christmas in Vermont with my mom and stepdad,โ he continued in the darkness. โBut I flew back to New Orleans for New Yearโs. Sarah and Michael invited me to dinner with them at Basin. Well, more an instruction than an invitation. Iย hadย to meet the famous Claire.โ
I took a breath, nervous to ask but needing to know. โWhat did you think of her?โ
Wit whistled. โI thought she was extraordinary,โ he said. โShe looked like Sarahโs twin, of course, but Iโm not making air quotes when I say she had a sparkling personality.โ
โYes,โ I nodded. โThat was Claire. She dazzled.โ She just had no idea she dazzled, what big things awaited her.
My heart sank.
Had.
Big thingsย hadย awaited her.
I didnโt think I would ever get used to that past tense. โWhat did you guys talk about?โ I asked.
Witโs fingers mingled with mine. โWhat doย youย think we talked about?โ โI donโt know,โ I said. โTulane?โ
โNo, Tulane didnโt come up,โ Wit replied. โWhile I was watching your sisterย notย eat her salad, she couldnโt stop talking aboutย you.โ
My stomach dropped. โWhat?โ
โโYou need to meet my sister,โโ he said. โโYou would love her, Stephen. Sheโs so many things, but really a combination of adorable and acerbic. All your jokes I only laughed at? Meredith wouldโve had killer comebacks instead. I bet you two could go back and forth for hours.โโ
I slowed my pace.
โSmart,โ Wit went on. โGoofy.โ He took a breath. โDramatic. Midnight snacker. Loyal. Fantasy reader. Competitive. Deep sleeper. Fearless.โ He hooked a few fingers around mine.
The corners of my eyes stung. I hadnโt felt like that girlโClaireโs sisterโ in a very long time, not until coming back to the Vineyard and meeting Wit. My voice cracked when I spoke. โHow did she know your name was Stephen?โ
โShe guessed Wit was a nickname for Witry,โ he said. โSo she asked what my first name was.โ He paused. โWhy? Does it matter that Iโm named Stephen?โ
I stopped in my tracks. We mustโve walked only a mile out of three, but it was time. โNo, it doesnโt,โ I said, untangling my fingers from his. โThereโs nothing between me and Stephen.โ
Wit didnโt respond at first. โIn what sense?โ he eventually asked. โYou and the name? Or you and me? Us?โ
I sighed. โThe latter.โ
The moon was shining bright enough that I saw Witโs brows furrow. โI donโtโโ
โThe weekโs over, Wit,โ I said, swallowing hard. โAnd when the wedding ends, the other things end, too.โ
โWait,โ he said. โOther things?โ
โOurย thing,โ I said, gesturing between us. โWhat weโve been doing for the past few days, acting likeโฆโ
#HitchMeToWitry, I thought.ย Acting like #HitchMeToWitry.
โWell, why canโt things continue?โ he asked. โWhy canโt we go beyond this?โ
My pulse spiked. โYou imagined going beyond this?โ He was quiet, then sighed. โNot exactly.โ
โSee?โ I shook my head.
โNo, no,โ he said quickly. โI expected this week to go one way, but then it didnโt, and I got caught up in the magicโgot caught up inย you. It sounds stupid, but I never considered that time was running out. This placeโฆโ He trailed off to gaze up at the moon. โItโs one of those special places where
you feel like time doesnโt exist. Where it will always be summer, where Iโll always wake up with you.โ
My body began trembling. โWell, thatโs not how it works,โ I said. โIt may feel that way, but itโs an illusionโa fantasy. This week will end. It will.โ
Wit put his hands on my shoulders. โWe donโt have to,โ he said. โWe can stay together.โ
โHow?โ I backed away from him. โYouโre going to New Zealand! Youโre going to the other side of the world for a wholeย year!โ
โAย schoolย year,โ he corrected. โLate August to May, and we can do long distance.โ
Long distance.
Everyone said it was difficult, and I applauded those couples who skillfully navigated itโฆbut me? There was a reason why Claire hadnโt said โpatientโ when painting a picture of me to Wit. I wasย notย patient. The huge time difference, waiting for scheduled FaceTimes, or if we were lucky, a visitโI would not be able to handle that. I would beย miserable. Ben and I had planned on staying together, and look how that had turned out! Heโd changed his mind before weโd even tried. Four years together, and he didnโt have enough confidence in us.
โWeโd be long distance anyway,โ Wit was saying. โEven if I was back at Tulane.โ
โI canโt,โ I said. โI canโt do long distanceโat least not a-whole-other-hemisphere long distance. It wouldnโt be enough, Wit. It wouldnโt work for me.โ
The breeze rustled the tree branches, and I pretended I couldnโt smell the skunk stench in the air. Hopefully all the dogs were inside for the night.
โThen come with me,โ Wit said softly. โCome to New Zealand.โ I snorted. โYouโre kidding.โ
โIโm not.โ
A shiver ran up my spine.
โWeโve had so many great adventures here,โ he said. โLetโs go on more together, so many more. Claire said youโre fearless.โ His voice dropped to a murmur. โAnd I think you need this as much as I do. I think youย needย something, something differentโฆโ He trailed off. โCome with me.โ
I felt my throat begin to close. โI canโt,โ I choked out. โI canโt. I have to start school. I have to meet my roommate, sign up for classes, make new friends, study, walk home for dinner once a week. I canโt leave. No way.โ
Wit didnโt respond. We just stood there for a couple of minutes and then resumed walking down The Farm road. Even if the mood had plummeted, he was going to touch the Paqua obelisk. He was going to complete the dare.
And complete the dare we did. We did it in silence, but I tagged the cold stone and released a long, exhausted breath. If only we didnโt have three miles back to the houses.
It was 2:00 a.m. by the time Wit walked me to the Annexโs door. We awkwardly stood there for a moment, not quite sure what to do. โGood night,โ I said at the same time he took my hand and said, โOne more day.โ
โWhat?โ I asked.
โThereโs one more good day,โ he said. โThe week isnโt over yet. We still have the wedding tomorrow.โ He squeezed my hand. โLetโs pretend.โ
Pretend.
I knew what he was suggesting.ย Letโs pretend that time doesnโt exist. Letโs pretend that this week isnโt ending. Letโs pretend that we will always be usโ happy, sunburnt, and tangled up together.
It would hurt. It wouldย reallyย hurt, but it would be wonderful, tooโone last perfect day with him. โAll right,โ I whispered, squeezing his hand back. โWeโll pretend.โ

Instead of curling up on the love seat, I walked through the sitting room and into the bunk room. The window was open, wisps of the Cabinโs music and laughter spilling insideโa lullaby of sorts. I smiled to myself and then slipped under Claireโs covers and closed my eyes.
