Thursday: Chapter no 14

The Summer of Broken Rules

Wit and I woke up early to go hiking but not early enough to avoid Michael stretching pre-workout. โ€œGood morning,โ€ was all he said as I bowed my head, Witโ€™s hands on my shoulders.

โ€œUm, yeah, good morning,โ€ I stammered back.

โ€œAre you embarrassed to be seen with me?โ€ Wit whispered. I smiled and shook him off. โ€œMore likeย mortified.โ€

We stopped by the Annex so I could change into hiking clothes, fill up a water bottle, and grab the Raptorโ€™s keys. My parents were asleep, their bedroom door shut, but Loki was wide awake and bouncing around the cottage. The Jack Russell could barely contain himself when I clipped his leash onto his collar, knowing it was time for a walk.

The Menemsha Hills Reservation Trail was up-island in Chilmark, and Wit was almost as excited as Loki by the time I parked the truck. โ€œItโ€™s one big loop,โ€ I told him and glanced up at the overcast sky. Hopefully, weโ€™d beat the forecasted downpour. โ€œClaire knew it better than me.โ€ I paused. โ€œIโ€™m not the best with directions.โ€

โ€œWell, lucky for us, I am,โ€ Wit said, pulling a map out of the nearby hutch. He unfolded it, scanned it for a few seconds. โ€œOnward?โ€

I nodded. The cool thing about this trail was that it was woodsy but then out of nowhere, youโ€™d pop out of the trees and have your breath taken away by the view. My favorite part overlooked the ocean with its wide-open beaches and rolling cliffs.

โ€œI love this,โ€ Wit said once we got into a groove, our sneakers covered in the dusty sand we were kicking up. โ€œThis is exactly the type of thing I want to do in New Zealand.โ€

New Zealandโ€”I wished the thought didnโ€™t make my stomach turn so much.

โ€œTell me about when you were younger,โ€ I randomly said. Wit raised an eyebrow. โ€œWhen I was younger?โ€

โ€œYeah, like when you were in high school.โ€ โ€œSo barely two years ago?โ€

I was thankful Loki jerked me ahead so Wit didnโ€™t see me blush.

โ€œThereโ€™s not much to tell,โ€ Wit said. โ€œI lived in Vermont with my mom, I went to schoolโ€”I didnโ€™t love it, but I didnโ€™t hate itโ€”and I skied as much as possible on the weekends in the winter.โ€

โ€œWhat about your friends?โ€ I asked. โ€œDid they ski, too? Or snowboard?โ€

Wit hesitated for a moment. โ€œTo be honest,โ€ he said, โ€œI only have a couple of good friendsโ€”Kevin and Caleb and I have known each other since kindergarten. But Iโ€™m always cool doing my own thing, too. There were people I hung out with from time to time and studied with, but not a huge group of friends.โ€ He shrugged and chuckled to avoid any awkwardness. โ€œI guess thatโ€™s why Michael and Sarah take me out with them in New Orleans. Since itโ€™s kind of the same way at Tulane. Iโ€™m not great at making friends.โ€

โ€œAnd Iโ€™m not great at keeping them,โ€ I found myself saying, reining Loki inโ€”heโ€™d caught a whiff of something and was trying to crawl under the pathโ€™s split-rail fence.

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Wit asked. โ€œI bet you have plenty of friends.

Youโ€™re incredible.โ€

My heart twisted. โ€œI did have friends,โ€ I told him. โ€œBut somewhere along the wayโ€ฆโ€ I trailed off and cleared my throat. โ€œSomewhere along the way, I stopped paying attention to them. Everything became about Benโ€ฆ especially after Claire died. I was so sad and checked out that I clung to the

person closest to me and didnโ€™t let go. I shut out everyone else and didnโ€™t ever open the door again. Because Ben loved protecting me. He loved that Iย neededย him, until he decided that he didnโ€™t needย meย anymore.โ€

โ€œBen?โ€ Wit asked. โ€œWhat happened to Shithead?โ€

We reached another overlook and sat down on its bench, built from three slabs of stone. I quickly told Wit about Benโ€™s drunken 2:00 a.m. voicemail and what Iโ€™d said when Iโ€™d called him back. โ€œSo heโ€™s just Ben again,โ€ I finished. โ€œBut in the sense that I donโ€™t careโ€”heโ€™s beneath my consideration. I blocked his number.โ€

Wit leaned over and kissed the top of my head, leaving an arm slung over my shoulder. It was freckled from the sun. โ€œGood for you, Killer.โ€

I shut my eyes.ย Killer.ย There it wasโ€”not one of our ever-changing terms of endearment but my special, sweet, inside-joke nickname.

Now, did I have one for Wit? That was more complicated.

Are we meant to last more than a week?ย I wondered, wishing I could ask Claire to consult her astrology charts and tarot cards.

โ€œWhat about you?โ€ I asked. โ€œHave you ever had a girlfriend?โ€ โ€œYeah,โ€ he answered. โ€œFor a little while in high school.โ€

I elbowed him.

He laughed. โ€œWhat?โ€ โ€œMore details, please.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s important. Girls care about this stuff.โ€

Wit sighed. โ€œHer name was Brianna. We were in the same math class and agreed to go to junior prom together. It escalated from there.โ€

โ€œWhen did you break up?โ€

โ€œWinter senior year, because apparently I didnโ€™t give her enough attention.โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t sound like you,โ€ I said.

His lips quirked. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ I swallowed. โ€œOh, just thatโ€ฆโ€

You are affectionate without even thinking about it. You let me talk for hours, and you listen for hours. You make me feel absolutely golden.

But I couldnโ€™t say any of that, so I kissed him. โ€œWhat about Tulane?โ€ I asked afterward. โ€œAny love interests there?โ€

โ€œReally?ย Love interests?โ€ I gave him a look.

He shrugged. โ€œSome girls, yesโ€ฆbut they werenโ€™t real relationships or anything. We would hang out a couple of times, and thenโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHook up,โ€ I finished for him. โ€œYou hooked up, and that was it.โ€

Wit ran a hand through his hair, face flushed. โ€œMeredith, why are we talking about this?โ€

Because, I thought.ย Because I want to know if thingsโ€ฆif things were differentโ€ฆ

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ I said quickly. โ€œSorry, Iโ€™m being stupid.โ€ I leaned forward to grab my water bottle from my backpackโ€™s side pocket. โ€œLoki!โ€ I coaxed him over, then squirted a stream into his mouth. He gulped and gulped.

โ€œNeat trick,โ€ Wit commented. โ€œClaire taught him,โ€ I said.

He nodded thoughtfully. โ€œSeems like something sheโ€™d do.โ€ I laughed. โ€œYou sound like you knew her.โ€

โ€œWell,โ€ he said, shifting on the bench, โ€œactuallyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI talk about her a lot,โ€ I said. โ€œI know.โ€ I gestured around us. โ€œEvery piece of this island isย herย to me, so I canโ€™t help it. She wouldโ€™ve liked you.โ€ Wit gave me a gentle smile. โ€œSarah said that, too,โ€ he said. โ€œShe thought we would be really good friends.โ€ He paused, not exactly looking at me, gazing at the horizon instead. His fingers were folded on his lap. โ€œMeredith,

I think I need to clear something upโ€”โ€

The sudden crack of thunder drowned out whatever he was going to say.

โ€œCrap!โ€ I said and shot up off the bench. Finding the car and driving home in the rain was daunting. โ€œLetโ€™s make a run for it!โ€

But I didnโ€™t know which path to take. Multiple trails led to our overlook. Witโ€™s hand found mine. โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ he said. โ€œI know the way.โ€

* * *

Our clothes were drenched by the time we reached the Raptor, and I gladly tossed Wit the keys when he offered to drive. I swung myself up into shotgun, a soaking-wet Loki settling on my lap. It was too bad I didnโ€™t have a beach towel to wrap him in, because his first inclination was to shake himself dry.ย Perfect, I thought, now also covered mud.ย Just perfect.

Wit didnโ€™t laugh; instead, he resumed our conversation from earlier. โ€œIโ€™m sorry for being weird about the girls,โ€ he said, coughing. โ€œItโ€™s not something Iโ€™m proud of, and Michaelโ€™s already chewed me out a bunch of times.โ€

โ€œYou tell Michael about that stuff?โ€ I asked. โ€œYes.โ€

I nodded but didnโ€™t say anything, remembering how Claire constantly told me I deserved more than Ben, that someone better for me was out there. โ€œI donโ€™t know when itโ€™s gonna happen,โ€ sheโ€™d said once, after I came home from a fight with him. She and I were curled up together in her bedโ€”her the big spoon, me the little. โ€œBut someday, somewhereโ€ฆโ€

And then sheโ€™d murmured something in my ear.

It had stopped my sobbing for a second and made me smile.

โ€œYouโ€™re prettier than all of them anyway,โ€ Wit added as he turned the Raptorโ€™s windshield wipers up to full speed. โ€œBy far.โ€

I squeezed Loki to my chest. โ€œDonโ€™t say that.โ€

โ€œBut itโ€™s true.โ€ He took a hand off the wheel so he could lick his thumb, then reached over and wiped some mud from my cheek.

My chest tightened. โ€œI donโ€™t care if itโ€™s true,โ€ I said. โ€œPlease donโ€™t call me pretty.โ€

Why not?ย I expected him to ask, but he didnโ€™t. Instead, Wit flipped the blinker before pulling the truck over to the side of the road. He threw on the hazard lights, then turned to me. And I could see it in his eyes, in their gold rings, that he remembered yesterday morning, us fooling around together.ย Donโ€™t call me pretty, Iโ€™d been quick to say, and then Iโ€™d managed to leave his room without an explanation.

โ€œOkay,โ€ Wit said slowly, both hands still on the steering wheel but not breaking eye contact. My pulse raced. โ€œWhatโ€™s the deal? Tell me, please.โ€

I waited a heartbeatโ€ฆthen twoโ€ฆthen three. Witโ€™s hands dropped from the wheel.

โ€œEveryone says Iโ€™m pretty,โ€ I murmured.

โ€œWell, theyโ€™re right,โ€ Wit replied. โ€œYou are undeniablyโ€”โ€

โ€œBenย called me pretty,โ€ I cut in. โ€œBen called me babe, Ben called me cute, Ben called meย pretty.โ€ My eyes prickled. โ€œHe almost never acknowledged that I had something more to offer than my looks.โ€ I blinked away tears. โ€œAnd I canโ€™t hear it anymore. I canโ€™t handle it.โ€ I paused. โ€œEspecially from you.โ€

Wit was silent.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to be โ€˜prettyโ€™ to you,โ€ I tried again. โ€œIt means nothing. Itโ€™s sanitized and superficial.โ€ I reached for one of his hands and squeezed it tight. โ€œYou pay me the most wonderful compliments. You say such interesting things no one has ever said before, like how affectionate I am, and smart and cleverโ€ฆand I canโ€™t even tell you how good that makes me feel.โ€ I kissed his fingers, which were warm despite the downpour. โ€œHearingย thoseย things make me so happy.โ€ I started kissing his palm, along his love line.

โ€œOkay,โ€ Wit said after a minute. โ€œI wonโ€™t say youโ€™re pretty.โ€ He sighed. โ€œBut am I still allowed to think it? Because if notโ€โ€”his eyes flicked up and

down my body, all wet and splattered with mudโ€”โ€œthatโ€™d be a huge ask.โ€ โ€œA huge ask?โ€

โ€œAnย impossibleย ask.โ€

I laughed. โ€œEven when I look like this?โ€

โ€œUh-huh,โ€ he said, leaning over to mess up my hair. โ€œEven when you look like this.โ€

* * *

Michael texted me just as we pulled onto The Farm road.ย I donโ€™t know where you two rogues are, it said,ย but everyoneโ€™s invited to Moor House for board games and gumbo.

Wit groaned when I read the message aloud. โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked. โ€œDo you have something against gumbo?โ€

โ€œNot at all,โ€ he said. โ€œJeannieโ€™s gumbo is theย bestย gumbo in New Orleans.โ€ He paused. โ€œItโ€™s just, you know, with everyone in one houseโ€ฆ like the whole Varsity Room situation?โ€

I nodded, catching his drift. โ€œA massacre.โ€

Because while Wit and I had fled early, so many people had been unable to escape elimination when the Varsity Roomโ€™s party officially ended. According to Pravika, at least ten players were assassinated.

โ€œWeโ€™ll have to be creative, then,โ€ I told Wit. โ€œClimb through some windows or something.โ€

Hopefully Ian wouldnโ€™t consider that possibility, and if Jeannieโ€™s gumbo was as delicious as Wit claimed, then Iโ€™d happily wait out my cousin all afternoon.

โ€œBy the way,โ€ Wit said, โ€œdid you ever text Sarah about getting in touch with Viv? For your target?โ€

My heart scrambled up into my throat. โ€œOh.โ€ I could barely speak. โ€œIโ€ฆ um, donโ€™t need to anymore.โ€ I bit my lip. โ€œVivโ€ฆdelivered it right after you left last night.โ€

โ€œWait, sheย did?โ€ Wit swerved a little but righted the Raptor quickly. His hand went to my knee, but for once, I didnโ€™t want it there. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me in my room?โ€

โ€œBecause I was too busy seducing you,โ€ I joked. โ€œWith my sweat-soaked T-shirt and such.โ€

โ€œAh, yesโ€ฆโ€ Wit said but trailed off as if also thinking about me sobbing in my sleepโ€”crying over Claire. โ€œIโ€™m an idiot.โ€

โ€œBut a handsome one,โ€ I said.

โ€œHandsome?โ€ He gave me an incredulous look. โ€œYou can call me

handsome, but I canโ€™t call youโ€”โ€

โ€œYouย likeย being called handsome,โ€ I said. โ€œYesterday morning, you pouted like a little boy when I said Iย wouldnโ€™tย call you handsome.โ€

Wit straightened up in his seat.

I tried to turn the subject back to him. โ€œIโ€™m guessing youโ€™re going to try to get your target today, right?โ€

โ€œTry?โ€

I rolled my eyes. โ€œAsshole.โ€

โ€œBut aย handsomeย asshole, right?โ€

โ€œYes, although handsome assholes do not compare to handsome idiots.โ€

Wit laughed and nodded. โ€œYeah, yeah,โ€ he said. โ€œIโ€™m going to give it my best shot.โ€

โ€œCool,โ€ I said, then went silent, wishing this ride could be over. I knew who Witโ€™s next target was, and while it would probably be an easy execution, the repercussions would be difficult.

For me, not him.

โ€œSpeaking of,โ€ I found myself saying, โ€œI think Iโ€™m going to take a step back.โ€

He raised an eyebrow. โ€œA step back?โ€

โ€œUh-huh.โ€ I nodded. โ€œWith Ian on the prowl, Iโ€™m going to play more defensively for a while. Heโ€™s getting under my skin, and I want to be on my

guard.โ€

โ€œBut youย areย on your guard,โ€ Wit said. โ€œYou even know Ianโ€™s your assassin.โ€ He sighed. โ€œI donโ€™t know who mine is, and thatโ€™sย reallyย freaking me out, but Iโ€™m not letting it stop me.โ€

โ€œWit,โ€ I said, his name now difficult to say. โ€œYou haveย so manyย people freaked out that I think evenย yourย assassin is freaked out. You can afford to be a bandanna-wearing bandit.โ€ I took a breath, rehearsing what I needed to say next. โ€œBesides, thereโ€™s an advantage to me switching to defense.โ€

His voice was deadpan. โ€œEnlighten me.โ€

โ€œWell, while I avoid Ian, my target will be doing most of the work.โ€ โ€œMost of the work?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I told him. โ€œSure, theyโ€™ll be out there having fun, but the more people they take out, the fewer people Iโ€™ll have to deal with when the time comes.โ€

Wit kept his eyes on the road, but I could almost hear the gears going in his head and see the scenarios he was envisioning.

Please, I thought, stomach stirring.ย Please believe me. Get on board. This is how it needs to beโ€ฆ

โ€œWho is it?โ€ he asked.

Blood pumped through my ears. โ€œWhoโ€™s your next mark?โ€

I hugged Loki so hard he let out a bark.

โ€œFuck,โ€ Wit murmured. โ€œItโ€™s me, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œNo!โ€ I said quickly, watching him run a hand through his hair. โ€œNo, oh my god, Witโ€โ€”I forced a laughโ€”โ€œitโ€™sย notย you. Donโ€™t be ridiculous. Of course itโ€™s not you!โ€

His jaw tightened. โ€œThen why did I have to ask twice?โ€

Wordsโ€”I needed words, andย fast. โ€œBecause even though itโ€™s not you,โ€ I answered, โ€œitโ€™s still someone Iโ€™m close with.โ€ I mentally ran through the names of who was left, soon landing on one. โ€œSomeone Iโ€™m aligned with.โ€ I

took a deep breath and hoped this wouldnโ€™t come back to bite me. โ€œLuliโ€”I have Luli.โ€

He gave me a look. โ€œLuli?โ€ I nodded. โ€œLuli.โ€

โ€œNot me?โ€

โ€œNot you.โ€ Silence.

โ€œThat sounds like solid logic, then,โ€ Wit eventually said. โ€œFocus on outwitting Ian, and let Luli have her fun.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ I looped my pinkie around his and locked them together. โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what Iโ€™m going to do.โ€
